Why do you want your vassals to have gavelkind ? The AI is very bad at managing its own succession crisis; 2nd and 3rd sons always fight for the main title(and win most of the time I think)

But then, if you prefer to have Kingdoms in your Empire, those Kingdoms will be weakened.
But you, ruling the empire should have just one son, so you don't split up your power :D

I though my kings vassals had their own succession laws since they can raise their crown authority

It's simple: Gavelkind is terrible (at least, I can't think of anywhere it'd be useful), Elective is very good within small realms with few vassals, Primo for larger ones.

Seniority is useful at certain moments but not generally.

Primogenture is hands down the best succession law. That's why nearly all monarchies of our history have employed some form of it to stay intact. Elective is very risky if you have a small dynasty and your ruler dies while your chosen heir is still young. It's extremely unlikely for a child to win the elections in a larger empire.

Wrong. Elective + only archbishops. Archbishops can't stand for election. If your sons are the only valid candidates, then the title will always stay in your family.

And primogeniture is far more likely to have the "better second son" problem. That typically doesn't happen in elective.

Elective is only great when all electors are of your dynasty, since you can then choose the best heir from a broad amount of characters

Of course, you can choose the best heir anyway just be MAKING him an elector - give him a duchy and he's automatically an elector. You don't need to run your kingdom with all-dynasty electors, that would be stupid.

But the best way to have lots of candidates is to give them all land, so they breed like rabbits ;)

Elective is very risky if you have a small dynasty and your ruler dies while your chosen heir is still young. It's extremely unlikely for a child to win the elections in a larger empire.

Seniority is also good if you have your dynasty spread out through the map and want to unite your dynastic lands under one banner, but otherwise it's a very dangerous due to the likely very rapid succession of 70-year-olds you will be having.

In reality primogeniture was preferable. In this game elective is superior.

Try a game were you don't have a small family (why would any Christian ruler want a small one?), try to give everything to your kinsmen and wait some years. At some point you can always pick some young guy with high diplomacy and high stewardship as your heir. Your kinsmen will 99.9% of the time vote for your candidate of choice. The other vassals will vote for him too unless he has some veeeeerrrry bad traits.

Just recently:
I have a 45 years old Roman Emperor with good stats. I had picked his 12 year old son as his successor as I wasn't expecting his death anytime soon. When he died of some stupid illness (poison?) his son was elected with 20:0 votes.

Try it out yourself and you will see that elective is better.

Elective is by far the best succession law as long as you know how to breed your kinsmen properly.

Heres the strategy ive used in my last few games. I call it elective breeding!

1. Get the genius and strong traits in to the family. Usually i get one of them from Ruler designer and the other from marriage. Add lustful and/or hedonist to your guy via ruler designer

2. Get a wife with the Genius or strong trait (if you find one who have both KACHING JACKPOT!)

3. Breed up a couple of strong geniuses. If your wife doesnt breed enough kids with or fails to produce one with genius strong at all dont be shy, just seduce every last woman in your court and legitimaze your bastard geniuos strong kids. Divorcing or killing your wife might also be necesseary if she turns out to be a bad breeder.

4. After getting a couple of kids, educate them to be brave , gregarious and every other good +opinion trait. Also if possible make them lustful, as having vast amounts of kinsmen to select from is very important in the art of elective breeding.

5. Get elective succession and vote for your genious strong brave gregarious etc, etc kinsman

6. Win the game!

I dunno, having just one son can be risky. You never know if they're going to die suddenly. I like to have a 'backup' son if possible just incase my first heir dies. I did try elective for a while in my current game and it worked for a while, but when my empire got big enough that I had voters of a different culture to my chosen successor, they would sometimes vote for a different character. I think Primogeniture is much safer. You can still somewhat choose which of your sons you want to inherit... by this I mean you might have to kill a couple of your sons or make them Bishops.

I don't get the claims that elective in larger realms loses some of it's worth. In the game I'm currently playing I have over 100 direct vassals including 5 kings. (been this big for about 100 years) I hardly ever have trouble with factions, people choosing anyone but the heir I choose, and most everyone loves me. The realm is so stable because of elective, not despite of it. With only a third of the realm from my dynasty that leaves the other 2/3 with the +20 that elective brings. This neutralizes all of the new ruler modifier with a little left over for something else. Successions are stable as well, and once again, it's because of elective rather than despite it. I make sure dynasty members don't have any claims on me and then I bribe them if I need to when ruler changes. That's plenty to keep them happy until the new ruler has been around for a little bit.

If you have trouble with vassals under elective then you're going to have even more trouble with those vassals under some other succession law.

I am king of sweeden, so empire will be scandinavia, when I make it.

General, I like elective, but it is difficult to collect kingdom titles in elective befor you become an empire. you have different electors in each kingdom, so it is hurn to make them voite same way. In my case I probable can not change my elective low any longer because I become too big. So, I will have to try to create empire in elective low.

Elective! Make sure you turn off the alert sound when people changes vote, or it can get extremely annoying.

I recently found out you can breed children with more than 1 positive traits. It's rare, but I had a few heirs that is a (genius + attractive). So elective allows you to have the best ruler AND increases relations with all your vassals.
