Primitives taking systems upon reaching "FTL empire" stage

Here I was minding my own business, keeping an eye on a primitive world orbiting the same star as my forge world when they invent FTL and become real people. Good for them, right? Well no, for some reason the game granted them my outpost AND my settlement. Is this normal? This cannot be working as intended.

I used a console command to rectify this travesty but I would rather not have to do that. What happened to the "shared" systems from before?

"Shared" systems stopped existing when the 2.0 Starbase system was implemented, unfortunately.

I'd love to see them work out a way to re-implement contested space, of course.

I thought they were supposed to be blocked from reaching FTL if someone else owns the system. It seems to have always worked that way in my games since the change in 2.0. Did something change in 2.2?

Shared systems are gone, there can be only one system ruler. - the one who controls the outpost around the star.
When they get to space on their own you should be given on option to gift the system or to use influence to keep it with them as your empire pops (FP and such only have second option without influence cost).
If you were helping them to reach FTL, then you did not read a discription, that the system will become theirs.

An question to this, as far i know you can't lose your system if you own a non conquered colony in it.
What would happen if i have a colony in a system where a primitive civilisation reaches FTL?

I whole-heartedly agree. I think an elegant solution would be so the primitves just keep their planet and its output.
Implementation of "colonisation rights" for other empires would also be a neat feature for the future.

On the other hand, planets no longer being able to build colony ships puts a slight damper on this idea.

The primitives get the colony.

This is easy enough to manage, of course. (And if you're a militarist warmonger it never comes up at all.) Enlighten, protectorate, integrate. You'll lose any planet you have in the system for ten years, but you'll get it back after that. Probably don't want that planet to be your forge world.

I have to disagree. I was playing as an inward perfectionist pacifist xenophobe and thus I had no means to conquer or absorb these upstarts. Worse yet the system they took sat on a vital hyperlane junction. Ignoring my particular setup, the mechanics of this seem to be clearly broken. A stopgap "non-fix" to an issue created by the new sovereignty mechanics.

New events/mechanics are needed to resolve these eventualities, flavored by the empire this takes place in and the ethics of the upstart civ. With outcomes ranging from annexation, stewardship, quarantine and outright war/genocide. It shouldn't be too difficult.

They had to get rid of shared systems because there was some REALLY nasty bordergore the AI would cause, particularly in multi-planet systems. Unfortunately primitive interaction sort of got nailed with this issue of them getting the system if you're not careful. For most, pretty easy solution of just protectorating them or conquering them immediately. But in rare cases (hello Inward Perfectionists) you're in a bit of a pickle until they re-examine this situation.
