Is there a document anywhere that explains what stuff means in the save file and event files? I'm trying to get a better understanding of how the AI is going to react to things based on what is in the files (like HATE and FRUSTRATION). I'd also like to know how the AI determines which option it will choose when presented with choices in an event. Or what the chances are that it will choose one option vs. another.

I'm in the middle of my 3rd game of HoI. I played the first with no patches, began the second using 1.05, and now I'm using 1.06. I need some advice from you HoI veterans. Should I read the events file in order to be able to gain a perfect knowledge of future events and plan my strategy accordingly, or is it more fun not knowing what will happen, and reacting to seemingly random events based on how I play the game? I haven't read the file yet. Already in my latest game some things haven't happend that should have happened historically. I don't know why, and I'm debating whether I should find out.

P.S. I haven't played this latest game historically, either.

Depends on how you want to play...

I would suggest to play it blind at first so it feels fresh and new..(one hint dont spend hardly anything on land doctrines till March 39)..

Then once you know whats going on, then try to play it to maximize your situation and take full advantage of your knowledge...

Havard's site (posted by J.J.E.) covers your event questions. The hate and frustration values in the savegame are not used by the game (unimplemented feature). AI choices in events are fixed percentages (usually choose A); other AI actions are governed by the .ai files and country alignment and government type. Also, some AI actions are hardcoded: Allies declare war on Germany when warentry reaches 100 if they are not in another war already, USSR declares war on Germany in 1942 if not at war already, etc.
