Instead of lumping together the primary (extraction/harvesting) and secondary (manufacturing/production) industries, why not separate them? Primary industries usually require much bigger areas compared to the secondary industries and currently that 4x4 just won't work for farm fields and forest farms for example. Logging sites, farms, mines and oil fields just simply must be huge, or they look out of place.

Good compromise (if zoning huge areas is out of the question) could be to have those primary industries as a huge ploppable lots that develop randomly (so the lots would have some variation), improve and offer more jobs as the city grows.

Here are few examples from SC4 how those primary industries could develop.

1. Logging Industry:

4. Oil Drilling:

From those extraction/harvesting sites, trucks and trains would collect the resources via road/rail connection and transport to secondary industrial areas or export out of the city if no proper industrial areas were present. For secondary industries (Forest Industry, Food Industry, Metal Industry, Oil Industry) you could designate districts like you have shown on the videos and they would get resources from the primary industries or import if no primary industries were built.
