Pride & Providence
A History of the American Empire

Chapter 5: War of the World

Hurricane
(Part III)

…a large armada of British warships and transports was gathering to challenge the American dominance of the waters surrounding England and Ireland. On May 7th, a recon force of the British Armada ran head first into the full strength of the American fleet, consisting of twenty four ships. The ships were quickly dispatched of in a brief two day encounter of cat and mouse, with the Americans succeeding in the end of destroying seven of seven British vessels.

Unbeknownst to the British Admiralty, the remainder of the fleet sailed to its doom. British plans had been captured the previous day; British officers with all their honor were rather willingly to sacrifice their nation to spare their own life. On May 13th, the remainder of the British fleet, totaling sixteen ships had encountered the American navy just north of the French town of Brest; where the Americans were being resupplied by France – which was now at peace with the British.

What followed was a disaster for the British Navy and Empire. Sixteen British ships, loaded with thousands of troops destined for the New World were relentlessly decimated. After the first day, the British had lost two vessels compared to America’s one vessel; and the British set sail from the coast, fleeing towards home. Providence was against the British, as the American fleet followed and made up lost ground. After a two days chase, the American Navy trapped the British fleet near Cherbourg, France.

By the end of May, the British fleet, which had consisted of twenty three vessels originally, had zero vessels to confront the American navy. Of the twenty four vessels at the start of the battles, the American Navy had a presence of twenty two vessels. The navy would set sail for the friendly ports across the pond. The grasp that Britain so proudly claimed to own over the seas had been greatly shattered.

Providence so often shines on the US in Victoria1-2...
Making it an American English word. :p

Wouldn't be called Pride & Providence for nothing =)

I attribute it to Britain earlier being at war with France and Russia, prolly lost a good chunk of the navy.

True, having a stunted royal navy would make it a lot easier for America to finish off the last of the RN. Though still hat would take lots of French and Russian effort even then haha

Chapter 5: War of the World

The World Turned Upside Down

A solemn note had arrived on the morning of June 7th, 1846, as the last British Army in Canada; which had been trapped at Halifax since earlier in the year surrendered. A total of fifteen thousand British soldiers were killed, captured, wounded or missing. The New England Gazette and the National Intelligencer referenced the American victory of Yorktown in 1781. Rumor has it that at his surrender to General Washington, Lord Cornwallis had the band strike up “The World Turned Upside Down”.

An armistice of sorts was declared, as the subjects of the British Empire living in Canada realized the mother country had been defeated and no additional help would arrive. In early August, an American delegation met with the British delegation in Paris, to begin the discussions of peace. The British attempted to present a high hand, demanding that American Empire did not annex any territory from Canada; which was a fool’s folly. Britain had clearly been defeated in the war; and as such would need to pay the victor’s demand. Had not American troops burned down London to prove a point?

The days dragged into weeks; which dragged into months. It was already fall now, with winter just about a month away. American troops continued to occupy additional Canadian territory with no resistance. The American Navy kept a vigilant watch over the ports of England; whose depleted navy did not dare challenge American control of the seas. Britain was unwilling to meet the American demands half way. Initially the American delegation had been instructed to ask for all of Canada and British possessions in the Caribbean. As time progressed, American demands began to loosen from insisting on the Caribbean islands; as Canada was the primary objective of the war.

On November 5th, a new British delegation; which had arrived in late October signed a peace treaty. The sudden turn around was caused by the threat of additional retaliatory strikes for the burning of Washington in 1814. Britain could not afford to continue the war, the monarchy, the lords, the military had conceded to which its people had known for months. In the final proposition for peace, the United Kingdom agreed to the territorial ambitions of the United States – Canada, its last possession in North America proper would be transferred to the United States, along with the Cayman Islands and Jamaica in the Caribbean.

With the defeat of the British Empire, a stunning realization hit the civilized world. The American Empire was considered the greatest power in the world; Britain was a mere second. Just a decade before hand, America was hardly considered a great power. The world had turned upside down.

The American Legion's progress into Canada, as of November 1st, 1846, mere days before the declaration of peace.

Wow  let's see a map! :D

I thought I had a map; but apparently it didn't save properly.

Imagine the modern United States with Canada, Cuba, Jamacia and the Cayman Islands added on.

Chapter 6: Isolation

No Means No

With the war against the British Empire complete, the vast new territory of the American Empire would need to be secured; and the best way of securing the new territory, and winning the loyalty of the recently liberated population was three fold. The American Legion would be expanded; and would recruit former-British citizens, who had proved loyal to the Americans. The government would begin two new state-sponsored projects, a Canned Food Factory, along with an expansion of the existing Winery; which would employ a good portion of the eligible. The last piece of the puzzle was about integrating the Canadian provinces into the Empire; which would begin with the third east-west line of the Trans-Continental system.

Expansion of the Trans-Continental Railroad across Canada.

The reminder of 1847, which marked the first full year of Emperor Jackson II reign, would prove to be rather uneventful; except for the flurry of foreign diplomats arriving within Washington. On September 3rd, representatives of the Ottoman Empire; ought to solidify an alliance with the American Empire. During the war with Britain, the Ottoman Empire had requested to attaché a select group of military officers with the American Legion. The Ottomans would return to Istanbul dissatisfied, the American Empire refused to solidify an alliance that would entangle itself in European affairs.

Undaunted by the recent news, the Portuguese entered Washington with a sense of hope; which was quickly shattered by the Emperor’s outright refusal to see the Portuguese delegation; which returned to Lisbon bewildered. After a few months of no diplomats arriving within the Imperial City, a delegation from the recently defeated Belgium arrived; and quickly returned to Brussels. The delegation of citizens that met the Belgians at the port had advised them America was…not interested in other peoples matters.

On December 18th, diplomatic news arrived; which was quickly dispatched into the fireplace of the Imperial Residency. Of little interest to American affairs, Austria declared war on Russia. The only interest to the American Empire was the possibility that in need to fund the war, Russia might be willing to part with its Alaskan territory for money.

Ha, soon the North American Empire might deserve its name.
Rule the continent!

Indeed. Impressive gains in NA from this war.:)
