The RPS article talks about how allowing same sex marriage is one of the policies in the game. Seems weird for a city builder considering that sort of thing is never decided by municipal government, and certainly wouldn't vary from neighbourhood to neighbourhood.

read it again :- "I notice, among the many options, one to ban the recognition of same-sex partnerships".

"One journalist we showed the game to suggested it should be the other way around, that there should be an option in a district to allow same sex relationships.”

How is that a responsibility of a city? It wouldn't be bad if some of the houses would be inhabited by homosexual couples, but making a policy out of it, srsly?

Recognizing same-sex marriages would make houses inhabited by homosexual couples and that could be used as a population control technique :p.. Or maybe the residents will migrate from elsewhere..

I agree on the same-sex issue. It isn't a municipal issue, or not even an issue. How can possibly anyone be against same-sex marriage? Have they never heard that we're all supposed to be equal under the law.

Also it worries me that the RPS-interview indicates that the most difficult aspect is traffic (infrastructure). I really hope it doesn't mean that it will be super-easy to avoid red numbers, or that other aspects are short-changed in favor for yet another traffic simulator. It would make me very sad if there were no proper content which relates to the society-aspects of the city. After all, a city is far more than just a big engineering project.

I don't think the option to ban gay marriage is appropriate for the scope of the game, especially not on a district basis. I'd say just include gay marriage and leave it at that. I for one would like it most if it was just treated as an obvious thing that it's allowed, rather than just giving a bunch of bigots a way to be bigoted when it doesn't actually make sense (as said in the RPS comments, gay marriage isn't generally an issue that's handled on the municipal level and it makes no sense to be able to ban it in specific areas of the city. If one partner of a homosexual couple has a job in a no-homosexual area then what happens? Are they treated as single whilst at work? How do taxes work?).

Oh man now we are at the point we have to suffer homosexuality in games really? I dont care what they do in the realworld but i dont want a game where i have to see this, its not necessary to implent homosexuallity to a game espacelly on a citybuilder! Then i would love a law to forbid that the move in my town :D and no iam tolerant and not a religouse extremist or somethink but if that is implemented there have to be a tolerant about peopel who dont want to see gays in the game.

You won't be looking in their bedroom and seeing them having gay sex so don't worry, you won't have to confront your own homosexuality. It'll just be like, two people who are married and both have male or female names. if you don't mind it in reality then you shouldn't mind it in the game.

Well, in some coutries where to build a nuclear plant is not a municipal decision, still nobody complains about it being in game.
I like the idea of banning same sex marriages (in a game, not in real life ofc), the more policies, the better.

Fantastic point.
In any case while I think it is interesting to add "moral" issues to the game, as it could potentially enrich the experience, if there is no correlation then it serves no purpose. Just having it there for the sake of being there seems superfluous. I guess it add color? :) Also, why stop there? Let's have a bevy of social issues up for the player to decide: drug policies, internet censorship etc... These things have the potential to be meta game influences. Or perhaps we could obscure the issues more by having a particular area of the city that specializes in content creation, film/theater or finance and industry (ok that one is already there). But my point is if there is no over all effect from such policies what's the point? Media buzz?

In the US, in states that haven't legalized same-sex marriage or other recognition of same-sex partnerships (like civil unions), some local municipal governments/cities have policies for the recognition of same-sex partnerships. It'd be neat if they did have some kind of policy supporting gay rights, maybe so that you can create local "gay districts" like Castro in San Francisco or Chelsea in NYC. I'm not sure about banning it though, that seems to be rather negative.

Don't worry guys, our publisher has asked us to remove all political policies from the game so those will not be there when the game is released.
