If you need an explanation... How's this.

Vikings decide to explore the South of Vinland, and eventually, came upon Mesoamerica. The Vikings had a couple ships wreck on the coast there, but keep going. Lo and behold, a pair of Aztec Scouts discover it and the Aztecs reverse-engineer it, and sacrifice any survivors of the crash of course. Aztecs make a swarm of longboats, and set sail for Europe.

Definitely out of there, as is the whole mod, but that's about as good as I've got personally. I plan on playing an AAR about the Aztec Invasion though. Should be fun! :)

So here's my question: what we call the "Aztecs" were a tributary city-state (something like a vassal in CKII terms) of a different city state, called Azcapotzalco , until 1428. This gives us three options:

1. History diverged long before that, begging the question: when? 1000 CE, from the Vinland Vikings as in previous posts? The Aztecs weren't even in Mesoamerica until 1248 and lived far inland before that, making hypothetical contact between them and Vikings pretty tough
2. The event will happen very, very, very late in-game.
3. The Aztecs in the event have no relation to the historical Aztecs but use the same name anyway (which the Aztecs didn't use for themselves).

Anybody know which one it is? I'm not a DLC hater myself - I think it's funny but I don't intend to buy it - but I am curious. I just like my alternative histories to be well fleshed out (which is why I love Paradox games)

that you ask these questions ... oh man!!! it's a FUN dlc, not a history exercise or a Star Trek companion book. There isn't going to be a plausible explanation for 13th century Aztecs, you can make up one if you like though :D

Well i am disappointed, this DLC is beyond ridiculous. I will not buy it and i hope it fails utterly, i do not want to see anything like this ever again.
That's a rather ambiguous comment. Could you clarify whether or not you're looking forward to giving it a go?

Paradox releases such a vast array of DLC under the premise "it's not needed, if you don't like it, don't buy it", and with the money they make from selling it they use the resources to create Free patches for everyone.

So, kuri, hoping it fails isn't doing anything for anyone :glare:
Why not make meaningful DLC instead, you know, something that would actually FIT the scene?

Making the DLC is probably not exactly free either, so in my eyes this DLC is Paradox wasting resources on making junk instead of something worthwhile, which in turn means they have tons of resources or they wouldn't risk making something that might fail.

Because that takes both time and effort. I'm guessing that Sunset Invasions didn't take too much time or effort; most of the work done was probably text localisation and art. And I'm sure they're still working on a "meaningful" DLC, just that they need to release something to cover the period between the release of LoR and whatever's coming next. Paradox has repeatedly stated over and over and over that SI hasn't taken any development time out of other projects, and I'm inclined to believe them on that.

For all you know the next DLC is still in the coding phase, so they told their artists to do some Aztec stuff and then quickly write up some code to go with it.

I'm probably not going to buy SI, at least not right away, but I think I understand why Paradox is releasing it. So long I keep getting free content patches out of it, I'm fine with anything Paradox releases, even if I don't buy it.

You haters are missing the point: the free 1.08 patch. :)

Yeah, if anything, that's the silver lining.

It means we get a patch sooner than we expected. Isn't that a nice thing?

They ARE making a meaningful DLC.
SI is a MINOR DLC that took little effort and was confirmed to not have required any sacrifice that would affect the development of Major DLC #3.

Sure, they could make a minor meaningful DLC, but I think everyone would prefer it if meaningful additions got a Major DLC treatment rather than Minor DLC treatment.

Im sure we would expect the same reaction from fans, if Bethesda decided to have dwarves reappear from space with guns as a DLC.
For skyrim fans that would be a matter of ruining lore.

For fans of this game, its a punch in the face to the notion that Paradox makes decent historical games. So its understandable why people would dislike this DLC and not buy it, and complain of course.

Decent != Serious

In Paradox games we've had things like Alien Invasions, references to everything from H.P. Lovecraft to Blackadder to Monty Python to Jules Verne, and Gotland's ship names. The games may be of good quality, but they're still games

I can understand why people don't want to buy the DLC (given I'm probably not getting it myself), but I don't see there is any reason to be upset. If Sunset Invasion was part of an expansion pack that also had game-changing features, then I could understand people being upset. However, it is an entirely optional, non-essential DLC that doesn't affect core gameplay, besides adding a fantasy faction.

Also, if Paradox does release a Pagan DLC that makes them playable, then Sunset Invasion will be the most awesome thing ever.

Ah right, who can forget when mighty Tripoli formed Jerusalem, or when Lubeck beat back Tuscany for control of Africa.

Lol lore.
