Every time I get a pretender revolt, I now know just to end the game. Even with my retainers, they always come at me with three times my troops. Never ending waves. It is like David taking on Goliath, but you don't have a sling or any rocks and the giant has an AK 47 in each arm and kicking a tactical nuke your way with each foot. Or maybe the game could have family relationships and pretender plots that don't assume that every country is run by Atrides like the house of Plantagenet. The Capetians and the Hautevilles were pretty solid as dynasties.

Raise your heir to be less hate-able?

As pointed out, whether they're landed or not isn't a factor anymore with factions. They can and will form around a claimant for the throne who is an unlanded courtier halfway across Europe. But they'll be less likely to join up with these factions if they love you. Focus on diplomacy educations, and upon a succession pause and spend time passing out gifts, minor titles (landed titles if you have land that's part of their de jure duchy), and send your spymaster out to scheme against possible troublemakers and send your chancellor out to improve relations with folks who are less than 40 under 80.


And yes, if you're the Byzantine Emperor, if you have any piety to spare than throw out the excommunications and imprison folks. Of course, this only works if you've got the piety to do it, so choose who you slap with excomms wisely.

Yes, its a two-part strategy. First, I agree whole-hardheartedly, don't give county's or duchy's to potential rivals. Second, if a faction does form--Gift's for everyone! I mean, that's what they really want--gold! Spread the wealth around and watch those factions melt and disappear.

Now, if things are really not going your way (the treasury is empty), the next trick is to either start a holy war, or join an existing holy war (hey, I'm on a mission from God!). That should tamp down enthusiasm for a while giving you time to figure out another way to deal with traitors (i.e. plot, imprison, execute, etc.)
