during a multiplayer game my friend was playing sardinia piedmont and it told him that he would lose major power status even though he had 4 more prestige than necessary

Yeah, it doesn't update that warning immediately (maybe weekly? monthly?)

Quite a few calculations are done intermittently, to save on performance, so it can take a few days for these kind of things to update.
