My emperor's brother is married to a princess who has a claim on a nearby kingdom. I currently have cognatic succession law active in my empire. I am trying to press her claim and turn her into a vassal queen, but I'm not sure of the best way to go about it because she is childless and past her childbearing years. It is my understanding that if I successfully put her on the throne, she will be independent from me unless certain conditions are met.

Should I grant her land in my kingdom and then press her claim?
Or should I land her husband and then press her claim? I think this would just make her independent from me while being married to my vassal, and then once she dies, one of her family members will inherit the throne and be independent from me.

Or is there no point to doing this because there is no way to keep the kingdom under my empire?

I think you will be good pressing her claim after landing her unless the heir will be someone from outside the empire who is landed. Then you will need high crown law to keep it. I am unsure of needed laws if you have conclave.

I am not 100% sure on this so if you do press the claim I am Curious to how it all worked out.

1 Check out the succession law of the target kingdom
2 Check out the relatives of the woman in question
3 Combine the first two to know how the heir will be when she gets landed
4 Is her heir landed and which rank (count, duke or king)
5a Fifth: If her heir is not laded or a vassal of you, you should land her so she becomes your vassal and then press her claim.
5b If her heir is landed but outside of you realm the kingdom become Independent from you.

If you have Conclave there's a law you can enact that will prevent succession outside your realm, i.e. the same thing as High Crown Authority. This should cause one of two things to happen once she's landed and you've pressed her claim, and note I have no idea which one. Either a close relative will inherit and become your vassal king, or her title will revert to your player character.

I think, this is only true, if her heir is a king or emperor. Otherwise he will become your vassal when he inherits the kingdom.
More accurate to say it's only true if the heir is of an equal or higher rank to you.

I wish I could verify any of the hypotheses made in this thread, but it turns out that the lady wasn't quite as infertile as thought, and she managed to have a child, who became her heir and eliminating any chance of the title passing outside of my empire.
