The intent was to help define the core concept of identity, which is the representation of iconic figures (mechs) that fit within an established lore. Vs. the opposite, which simply dropping in a cool concept without any foundation. On its own you may have something interesting, but within the established universe, it sticks out like a sore thumb.
Rather than a movie reference, perhaps relating back to Battletech's own Phantom mech skill. Some call it lore, because it was released in an officially licensed publication, but it defies the established framework of Battletech, and therefore is something most Battletech fans would rather forget than embrace.
