Really? Did you miss the part where all the identity comes directly from MWO?
Absolutely Not.
The hardpoints and models come from MWO, for monetary reasons (art assets and animations are EXPENSIVE). MWO is just the latest in a string of derivative computer games of varying quality.

The identity comes from Battletech.

This was what I was referring to earlier. The variant and fluff may be canon, but some of the details may not be canon between different mediums considering differing mechanics translation will occur.

To elaborate, I'm not aware of any AH record sheet. ( I'd be curious to see one though. )
I had been under the impression that the variant existed to allow a non-YenloWang AC 20 Cent to exist in MWO since MWO is hard point based and the A in that game cannot fit the AC 20 because of the mechanics of its mechlab necessitating a variant that allowed this in demand build.

Such a variant was not required to field an AC 20 build in TT because the TT build rules are not Hard point based. Though we can now call all such customisations an AH now that the designation exists

Such a variant does not exist in Hbs game to our current knowledge either because the mechlab does not have the MWO actuator restriction, so this classic TT customization can occur. Any such modified can be headcanoned as an AH if one so chooses. It is a standard change which is denoted by the AH designation , A for base model +H for the addition .

Profit. I hope that helps.

In short identity can be described as depth (vs. superficial). There is a great example in comparing a couple of recent movies.
Star wars the force awakens vs Back Panther. One embraces the lore and keeps the identity of the character while integrating into a larger established universe. The other abandons established lore, and fails to create a compelling identity for the protagonist, leading to a muddled story filled with generic rather than iconic characters.

In Tabletop...if you play as a merc for any length of time, there is no such thing as mech "identity" Mechs mutate as needed by the whims of equipment avalibility, need of pilots, tech avalibility and personal play style. Also in tabletop, dumping ammo based weapons in favor of lasers makes a lot more sense, Ammo makes mechs evaporate and costs money..

This.

In TT the cost of reloading a couple LRM boats can be staggering, God forbid you lose them over a couple lucky crits.

Pretty harsh on Black Panther, there.

The intent was to help define the core concept of identity, which is the representation of iconic figures (mechs) that fit within an established lore. Vs. the opposite, which simply dropping in a cool concept without any foundation. On its own you may have something interesting, but within the established universe, it sticks out like a sore thumb.

Rather than a movie reference, perhaps relating back to Battletech's own Phantom mech skill. Some call it lore, because it was released in an officially licensed publication, but it defies the established framework of Battletech, and therefore is something most Battletech fans would rather forget than embrace.

That's fine and all and relevant. But I'm sure everyone here understands from experience that following that too far as a secondary discussion to where it becomes about those community members opinions regarding those movies and not the Cent then becomes off-topic derailment. Which is the point of the reminder to stay on target.
Very common when bringing up movies mid discussion unfortunately.

What? That's crazy. Why did the CN9-AH come to exist then? Its whole 'thing' is that it removes the actuator to mount the ac20.
IIRC weapons mounted partially in torso are also restricted to torso arc .

We know now that we can get a Yen-Lo-Wang from the CN9-A chassis. I am excited about this.

Per the record sheets from Record Sheets: 3039, neither the CN9-AH or the Yen-Lo-Wang have lower arm actuators. My kung fu is not strong enough to break the free of the pdf to share.

This is the craziest thread I've ever read. Somehow we've lost the identity of the Centurion because it can mount an AC20 in its arm? Even though the most famous Centurion of all time, Yen-Lo-Wang, is a custom that carries an AC20?

Hi Crl1981 and Delta Assault,

That's not fair exactly, he mentioned Yen Lo Wang, I believe it was more confusion because in MWO you can't modify actuators, which is a mechanic exclusive to that games mechlab, not to the IP.
https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/foru...-a-mount-an-ac20.1085846/page-3#post-24037128

Let's lift a brother mechwarrior up with us when possible.

I agree. Is the CN9-A still mounting an AC in this arm? Yes. So, this is enough of identity preservation for me. If it was like an LRM20 or some shizzle like that, I might agree with the op. But this? Totally ok with me.

Yes, I know, there are those who disagree with me about this topic, and I respect that opinion, I just don't share it. But well, there is nobody who actually forces you to mount an AC20. So what damage is done here? It "destroys" your idea of an identity for the ppl who do it and don't care?

I have a feeling that if you choose to run stock variants only in this game you will find yourself with a lot of 'mech chassis sitting in your Bay waiting on you to salvage or buy the right weapons you need. Up gunning the 'mechs you have and/or fielding 'mechs equipped with the weapons you have available is going to be far more practical and survivable.
