After a good amount of time of it's release with the addition of M&T i was finally playing eu4 and having fun while doing so; for the past 5 days i haven't played a single thing on my steam account and would very much appreciate if there was a way to not update and finish my 1.3 M&T game first before anything was broke.. while staying online if possible..

Set the game on Steam to "Do not automatically update this game".

That doesn't work that way. It only makes Steam not update the game while idling, but it will still update when you start the game.

The only way to preserve an old version is to copy the directory out somewhere else. If you did not do this, you cannot revert without pirating that version of the game.

I don't think you can play that version of the game 'legally' without steam regardless so.. it's a deadlock.

That is not true: If you are using Windows you could use "Previous versions" to regain 1.3. Obviously you would then have to copy the files outside Steam in order for it not to update again, so I do not think you can stay online, but it definitely is possible to keep 1.3 even if you already have made the update - at least for Windows.

The game runs perfectly fine outside Steam, and why should it be illegal for you to continue to use the files you obtained legally? You do not have to modify them or anything if that is what you are thinking of.
If you do copy the files outside Steam then always start through the launcher: After a while your DLC might disappear no matter what, but I experienced it when accidentally lauching the game directly from the exe.

That's a fair point. Let's say you need to make some kind of backup of it.

Ah.. online lost anyway at least game shall go on.
(I am really skeptic on that windows being able to revert 1.3 but if so; i'm so very very glad.)
Didn't know launcher was capable of that; thank you... i was thinking of the 'legal' sense that wasn't necessarily immoral but more so the stuff that would get this thread locked.

A number of mods of Paradox games have always recommended that you use a copied folder and launch the game from within the folder, not Steam, as their development cycles are, obviously, some way behind patch releases.

Windows is able to completely revert to 1.3, but you may have to do it fast. It can only revert a certain time back - which is adjustable I think - and I remember after a previous patch some people were already past all the regeneration points after a week or so.

That's kind of silly. the silent majority who buy the game on Steam and never/rarely visit the forums would have no idea of this advice, and most people just want their game to work without messing with the game files. I've never heard it myself.

I've already said in another thread, I think the colonial nation mechanism should have been left as DLC, as too significant a change to unleash via a patch (particularly for ironman games and 'silent majority' users). The Paradox methods can be frustrating and require a bit of planning at times to 'protect' your game, but I'd rather that than they bring out 3 or 4 minor bugfix patches only, and force you to spend £20 for basic new functionality.

But then even the two sentences above are bordering on contradicting each other :).

You can disable the auto updates for your Steam games from outside the Steam application (i.e. without starting it to do so):

  1. Navigate to your Steam root folder (usually called "Steam").
  2. Enter the "config" subfolder.
  3. Open the file "config.vdf" (make a backup copy first just to be safe) in your prefered text editor.
  4. Then for each game change the "0" into "1" after "DisableAutoUpdate" (other than that preserve the file structure).
  5. Save the file.
Now when you start up Steam, none of the games for which you did the above change should auto update.
