They will be purchasable inside the game if you got bluecoins on your GG account.

To clarify somethings. We're planning to sell cheap downloadable contents for things that adds flavor and fun to the game, such as spritepacks and music. These will be available cheaply for about 1.99$ worth of bluecoins.

If this works out, we'll be able to fund much longer and bigger support for titles.

(ps, 1€ gives more bluecoins than 1$, as it is tied to the $..)

Oh no.....this feels like E:TW all over again...... Sorry to say but I had not expected this from Paradox.

What would you have said if the sprites came with the game, and they wanted to charge you extra for the counters?

A better comparison would be if the Game came with standard counters but you could buy a country specific counterpack.
Would I buy it, probably not as I am OK with the NATO counters but each to his own.
As long as they don't start selling AI upgrades or game mechanics, I am not too bothered about this.

Oh Johan...you clearly have no idea how a similar marketing scheme "worked out" for Bethesda, do you?

Horse armor anyone? Anyone?

While I think that this is (theoretically) nice way to keep money flowing to developers, I have to agree with these too messages.

Each download site will have a different pre-order goodie. This one is exclusive for GamersGate but you will be able to purchase it after release on other DD sites.

In lieu of a CE version this seems ok if you want to encourage downloading. Are all of these additional goodies sprites or music? Just want to make sure there won't be some addition like extra missions or units...

I *personally* don't mind even paying for real features (expanded OOBs, whatever). But as a marketing scheme it's the worst idea ever.

Bethesda, incidentally, learned its lesson and all expansions to Fallout 3 are pretty content heavy. No "dog armor."

Though this is really no different than selling exclusive content with a CE. The problem is that when you sell a CE, people feel that they're buying a luxury item. If you sell micro-expansions, people feel like they're nickel-and-dimed for things that should've been there all along.

Yeah, i think, too, that the announcement of this marketing strategy (together with the previous announcement of all units being able to have their unique sprites now, which of course was read as, ´...and it´s up to you to create those´) is rather unfortunate. It would have maybe been smarter to just be quite about the ´unique sprites for each unit´ feature and just publish the sprite packs (again: seperately from any game-mechanics XP, please!) later on, after release (and not roll the drums for the SPs prior to it). To give something as a bonus, where you have to explain to the costumers (wether or not you SHOULD have to explain it, is a diffent matter) why it´s not included in the first place (or left to modders), is not very image-boosting, in my perception. But you guys certainly have a lot more experience with this, than i do (0 is easy to beat, after all), so this is just my humble opinion.

Oh no.....this feels like E:TW all over again...... Sorry to say but I had not expected this from Paradox.

Thanks for the feedback, this reaction was somewhat expected. Let me explain our thoughts on this:

Every hour costs money and we are always looking for what you guys want us to add in the games. The sprite packs is just a test, like "is this at all interesting for anyone" and if so we might add stuff like this to the game as we move along developing things over time.

To avoid the discussion that we are ripping people off we wanted to include it in the pre-order.

If you think this is a shit idea we'll probably not do it any more, no reason to get upset.

Agreed, and it is especially odd to suddenly hear about this the day I can finally pay Paradox some money. I'll buy the game, but in my opinion, I pretty well stay the hell away from games that nickle and dime you for additional content.

To me, this seems like it will have a majorly undesired effect of diverting developer resources into creating meaningless pay content instead of working on patches or new games unless this scheme is able to pay for additional developers that only work within this additional content scheme.

I have no problem paying for additional content in major updates like NA and IN were. But Paradox is about to get roasted by their fan base starting right now as word gets out they want to charge for custom content. I feel a face palm coming on.

but it´s not changing the gameplay, its the same with 1 or 6 different sprites

It's changing the way the game looks, and therefore the way the game feels, if you use sprites that is.

It annoys me that Paradox could release a fantastic amazing game with lots and lots of lovely sprites for sprite users (lets please not have another load of 'well I use counters' posts), but instead choose to withold lost of sprites so they can charge extra for them.

I am already mad that living in the UK I have to pay 40% more to download the game than if I buy it in the shops or on amazon, (when the rest of the world doesn't seem to have this situation), but to find I know have to pay extra to get the best sprites available at release is annoying.

Sell me a complete game at the right price, and for the same amount of money everyone els is paying for it. Please......

Again, it's just a matter of perception. I personally don't mind, but for some people it's a big turn-off.

I think that Paradox's small expansions (Deus Vult, Revolutions) were well received in the past, so that's probably the way to go - include the "extras" with substantial mechanic enhancements/additions. You still get the money, but you don't get the bad press (again, see Bethesda & Oblivion).

Fair enough; let's do a poll on this. Would be good to hear what people have to say. I'll ask Johan to put something up.

Pre-ordered! I am now a happy camper. :)

I think these optional sprites, music and what not DLC:s are a great idea. It will be interesting to see what else one can add to the game, further down the line.

I will now continue to dance around in my flat.

Hmmm, this is too bad.

Though I was able to play through HOI2 without many different sprites (or meshes...hehe) so I imagine it'll hardly be a deal breaker for me.

It's becoming pretty common to bundle stuff with preorders since preorders are so highly valued. I won't begrudge developers from doing it since it's in their right. Just disappointing after hearing about unique meshes for each level of armor, only to learn I'll only experience it with a preorder/additional money.

in my opionen its nothing bad on extra dlc. it polish the look, but you can play the game without it if you want, so why you make such a big think out of it?
