This is stupid, there is no ground got such high prices it would be enough if they cost the same as a hard copy at least if they were a bit cheaper because there were enough gamers who prefer a hardcopy...like me

Why are all those downloads more expensive than a hardcopy of the game? I could preorder the game for 32.odd € from play.com in the UK, free delivery to germany. Or i could pay 39.99€ for a Download at Impulse or Gamersgate.

If i have to pay 32€ for a hardcopy, i wont sure as hell don´t pay more than 20€-25€ for a gamedownload.:eek::wacko:

I once dowanloaded a game via Impulse, Sins of a Solar empire, and i was not satisfied the least, since the downloadsspeeds were only about 1.5MB/s and i could only get the most up to date version of the game, so i had quite some problems with mods.

Stores insist on allowing them to have lower prices than digital downloads because they are afraid that if digital downloads are at the same or lower price, they will be stuck with unsold copies.

Personally I don't really mind the difference in price since closing up in a hurry and rushing to the store (and thus spending another half hour in traffic) and then dealing with where to store the CD is totaly worth it for me.

Btw, 1.5 MB/s is a very good speed. Not instant download but by any means pretty close to it. I can't imagine a server uploading more than that per client anyway - unless on LAN that is.

Because if they were not, there would be no hardcopies. Retailers don't like competing with digital distribution.

I agree in a way with this, and you can see the logic from the retailers point of view, but there is no consistency.
In the UK it is 40% more expensive than retail for download, in the US there is very little difference. Also in the US, if there is no sales tax on the download version then it is actually cheaper than retail.

I have just come to accept that in the UK we are at the extreme end of the retailer versus download cost difference.

Another industrial sector who lives in the past.

Well, can't really blame them for trying to not lose money. Digital distribution is a very real threat to them, just observing the behavior of people on forums (i.e., everyone rushing to preorder from digital distribution services).

I have to say: after being initially extremely excited with finally pre-ordering the game I`ve been waiting for so long, I`m rather dissapointed now. My transaction didnt went smooth (what I`m fine with - happens) and my order is still pending (what is also fine - Gamersgate's FAQ says to email them in such cases for manual confirmation) but after sending a few e-mails still nothing changed and I didnt even get any answer, which feels a bit like getting utterly ignored.

I know it's just pre-order and it's not like cause of that I`ll have to wait longer to get the game, but darn it spoils my mood a bit.

So what? They are supposed to serve their customers, not the other way round... And so is Paradox. Digital Distribution is cheaper, customers pay less. Nothing to argue here.

I am quite confused aboot GG price. A lot of peeps talk about 39.99 USD which is fine for me but it seems it costs 39.99 EUR which is 40% more. Am I missing something?

EU companies have to charge VAT and part of the 39.99 Euros is VAT. US-based sales don't include VAT. I came across this quite often purchasing addons for my FSX. The very same addon is way cheaper bought in USD avoiding european VAT. Gamersgate doesn't let you do that though - IP-check prolly.

To quote Babbage, I am not able rightly to apprehend the kind of confusion of ideas that could provoke such a question.

Besides that's not the problem. If the store is hosted in the EU you have to pay VAT even if you're not in the EU - because the store HAS to charge VAT by european law. You need a non-EU store to avoid that. SO even if you're US or Kenian, it doesn't matter as long as you buy from Gamergate-EU.

Play.com is based on (or at least ships from) the channel island Jersey, because they can avoid VAT charges thanks to the LVCR. It depends on where the store is and not where you are.

AFAIK people from the US can buy for 40$ from Gamersgate though.

Yes, maybe Gamersgate has an US-based sidebranch. I can see some US-titles on GG but cannot buy them. Just check "Grand Age: Rome", the US is 4 Euros cheaper, pretty much the amount VAT would make. I cannot buy it "in my region" though and am forced to buy the EU version.
