you want them to strip and water the game down so everyone with a 386 Tandy can run the game?---much like sim city 5 did with the small maps, so anyone and everyone that owns a pc can play it? i hate to tell you at a certain point you have to stop complaining about your commodore 64 not being able to run games anymore so that the rest of us can enjoy better games. Sick of games being watered down so that the masses can play them on their play-stations and phones.
+1 for that if someone don't like this go and buy a console ;) we need more progress in games not to wait for the last 4% to switch to better systems. Without this CSL would be another sc2013 with littel maps boring water and social media +50 € +50 € DLCs.

The Paradox way is much better the best example is Europa Universalis 4 on the beginning it was a good game but now it has so much more options and content its mindblowing!

So can I pose a question to those of you who dislike the pre-order bonus? What incentive would you find acceptable for pre-ordering?

Learned my lession from Total War: Rome 2 I shouldnt really pre-order anything, but since you ask nicely ;)

As long as you're not one of those companies that use pre-order bonuses/DLC to either get more pre-orders because its a buggy game so you add in some shinies to lure people to buy. OR cut features out from the main game to sell to those who happens to pre-order.

This is why, as I posted in another thread, I feel more confident to pre-order if there actually arent any pre-order bonuses. To me it just a case of "Oh whats wrong with the game now when the devs dont have confident in the game alone to get pre orders". But that is purely experience from bad pre-order purcahses from my part.

A good example would be rome 2, which did basically both and a little more. Fake marketing and they basically cut out the greek states from the main game and gave to those who pre-ordered, lately sold the same DLC seperatly. That game was also almost unplayable at launch, so using both fake marketing and pre-order bonuses to get buyers to a buggy game is a big no no.

But as long as you're not doing anything of that, and just want to give something extra to those who pre-order your game in good will then I guess thats fine, as long as it doesnt lessen the experience for people who are late to the game. Literally ;)

The basketball court is in the release trailer. Looks like it was pulled. Either that or its misleading to show an item from a DLC.

Ah, that might be misleading. The item is in the game now as it's been made for the release (we're "done" with assets, CO is in full on bugfixing and polish mode). Sorry for that confusion.

@Azurespecter, how about one free (minor) DLC that a player could redeem at a later time. The individual could hold off until they see something they like. Pre-DLCs just annoy people because if they were made before the game was released, they should be included in the game. Only my opinion of course. If you really want the honest truth, just wait for us gaming dinosaurs to kick the bucket. The next generation will never know of what it was like before DLCs and you can shove it down their throat.

Actually now *that* is not a bad idea. I can see a plus for Paradox/CO in this, because anyone who had started losing interest in the game and would have stopped even visiting the site, might be tempted to check back at intervals to see if there had been any dlc they might like to claim, if they hadn't leapt to get the very first eligible item.

I myself did preorder because I could not bear to stand that I have lost a day or a few hours where I could not play this game :D

And secondly isn't there a digital soundtrack and an art book in there too?
That's the stuff I want in a deluxe edition at day one.
I was so disappointed at Simcity13 to have no art book at all.

Titanfall had a 250$ collectors edition with a statue and the most amazing art book I have seen so far.

To be fair, Deluxe Edition is probably not the best title, because you would expect an expansion in it. :) But that's the way it is nowadays and for 36€ (Germany)... You have my money already ;)

Just a quick note: I'm the lead designer of the game. From the start we have made a solid core game, and all of the bonus content was designed later. They sure do look cool when presented separately, but so are the things that were done for the base game, so don't worry :) I understand your concern, but at CO we have aimed fully to make a great game, and then to have just something extra if you are so nice as to pre-order or go for the deluxe version.

If you ask me, fully understandable. Not like any of that is game changing stuff, just some added goodies for those who pre-order/goes deluxe version. Fair game, don't listen to the haters.

Can't wait for release :)

Sell the game at £30 with mentioned monuments included. Leave the pre-order objects to modders, put the basketball court in base game as it will add to residential areas.

Offer -15% (on Steam) for pre-orders.

That way you are still getting top buck, customers are paying the average for a BBB title game (in the UK anyway). Players get all content and get a discount if they choose to buy before release (so no doubt more pointless dlc objects can be made).

Complaints for the sake of complaining..... yawn

who cares, some useless buildings that do the same as other buildings that are already in the base game.

I agree on one thing, a basketball court should be a standard game asset.

If it were, the game would be 99 cents more expensive. I dont get why people always assume if it were in the game it would be free! Thye have made it, they want money for it. You either get it included in the game and have no choice but to pay th .99 cents, or they give you the option to buy it. You never get the option to have it for free.

Thats it. Thats all there is.

From a business standpoint, we like pre-orders. It helps us make post game release decisions, and really helps with budgeting. So how do we encourage pre-orders?

If we give out too many features, or something really valuable, some might think we were intentionally leaving stuff out of the base game.

If we give out small bonuses, like a few game models, some might think that we're overpricing a cheap addition.

So can I pose a question to those of you who dislike the pre-order bonus? What incentive would you find acceptable for pre-ordering?

I really like some incentives for pre-order/deluxe that involves making the player "part" of the game. In the case of Cities Skylines it could be the chance to name a Cim (do they have name?), or to name a district (one of the random names that appear before we rename it), or to name a building (if the commercial buildings have names like "Bob Pizzaria").

If you want to offer extra assets you could just remodel one of the assets that are already on the game. So let's say the game includes a basketball court, pre-order/deluxe buyers would get also a different basketball court (maybe bigger, or with some more details).

And also things like discounts for later DLCs, or maybe the chance to play the game one day before everyone else?

Anyway, I like pre-order bonus so maybe it's not the answer you are looking for.

Personally I am sick and tired of day 1 dlcs. Paradox made me so sick of DLC, especially in crusader kings II. Victoria II and Hearts of Iron III was a nice vacation from the bad DLC policies...

If they do dlc, I hope they are not stream lined, pushed out in quick schedules with bugs. Small DLCs just bloat the game, I think having fewer, but larger DLCs is better idea. Reduces possibility of conflicting DLC

Going by that logic they could sell the game in 1000 parts. A good city builder should come with some recreational assets and I believe sports facilities should be part of that.

That's it, that's all there is.

I vote for good old expansion packs!

Cities: Skyline Transports
Now with Huge airports and big docks!

The Sims does it and I kind of like that idea (not how they actually throw out 500 addons each day, but content wise.)

I much prefer infrequent expansions (large) than frequent small dlcs. Maybe because in CKII it caused so many bugs, adding so many little things all the time, they didn't even have time to fix it

So can I pose a question to those of you who dislike the pre-order bonus? What incentive would you find acceptable for pre-ordering?

So I just broke my golden rule and preordered. It turns out what is required is:
20% Discount from Green Man Gaming
Being almost certain that I would buy and play the game even if it turns out to be mediocre
Having a high level of trust in Paradox
Having enjoyed CIM and CIM2, so being happy to support CO
Being happy to support a small company
Being happy to support that rarest of things - a game developer lead by women
Being happy to support Finns - it is so cold there they need some love
Rather friendly community PR guys, especially...
...having TotalyMoo respond very procatively to some daft EULA discussions on steam
Some preorder bonus stuff (tbh I don't really know what it is)
Having spend too long on forums and thus generated unhealthy levels of self hype.
Two glasses of wine.

TL:DR Pre-order requires 20% discount + company goodwill + alcohol.
