Oh but it has - I've unpacked several Steamworks games from DVD's before their release date because I a retailer sent out copies too early and I can't be arsed to wait to pre-load it.

Obviously it wasn't encrypted then - if it had been, you would've had to decrypt it through steam. Not all steamworks games use CEG's encryption features.

IMO steam becomes really handy when it comes to updates, DLCs, etc. And also you don't have to worry about your CDs getting scratched, so that's a useful perk too

I love this CDs getting scratched thing - what do you folks do with them? I have hundreds of games for PC and consoles; let alone music and movies (over 500 of them). I also had 3 kids. In ALL that time I have had 1 (one) damaged disc. If I had taken up the games stores on their 'scratch insurance' I would have wasted hundreds of dollars.

Most games are pirated on day 1 of release and then put on a torrent. The only people who are inconvenienced by anti-piracy measures are those of us who legally buy the games.

I wasn't challenging that - you should read the previous post. Someone mentioned pre-release piracy, which is 100% defeated by steamworks/ceg. Of course 99.9% of games are going to be pirated day one.

I don't support the practice, but I think some people in this thread are very misinformed or trolling.

Please, cite an example of a game that was preloaded over steam as being broken before release. I'd be interested in hearing how you have magically broken AES.
