So, a couple days ago there was a new interview about Stellaris.
For the uninitiated you can find it here.
I'm more of a lurking kind of a guy but I think it's a shame no one is talking about something that was brought up in the interview. (Or at least, no one that I've seen.)

On the bottom of the second page Henrik says, "We will support so called “pre-scripted” galaxies for when people makes total conversion mods like the Star Wars galaxy or whatever. That will be possible to make. It’s also possible that we ourselves will release such scenarios if it turns out to be something the players wants."

I understand that Stellaris is a different sort of beast than the other Paradox games and while the randomly generated galaxies are exciting I would hate to ignore the potential of pre-scripted galaxies. The total conversions to make Stellaris a game about Star Wars, Warhammer or whatever else look great but I'm thinking a different direction.

Through community mods or officially sanctioned I want to float the idea of "Challenge Scenarios." A pre-scripted map where the player takes control of a small xenophobic-pacifist empire struggling to fight off an incoming Blorg invasion. A "survival" map where the player tries to fight off a never ending end game catastrophe for as long as possible. The player is given a vast but crumbling empire and is tasked with keeping it together until date XXXX. The ideas are endless. I would love to see threads of players competing against each other to really min-max these scenarios too.

We already see the community gun for insane achievements and personal challenges in other Paradox games and in Stellaris I see an infinite canvas to facilitate this sort of gameplay.

I used to play Civilization 4 a lot and mod's like 'Rhye's and Fall' helped me stay invested, challenge myself and vastly increased the game's life for me.

I don't see this as a priority for Stellaris. I do see it as a long term way to keep gameplay fresh and interesting. And I want to bring the idea to you wonderful people.

The topic of predefined galaxies (and this interview) has been brought up before, though standardized challenge scenarios haven't been discussed. There are several posters who plan on doing survival mode games, so I suppose that sort of counts... but officially released ones would carry a lot more weight and draw more interests, yes.

I haven't seen that. What is a "survivor mode" game?

Some of us are crazy masochists who want to fight to the last Pop against relentless space mongols on steroids... basically, endgame crisis right off the bat (e.g. Tyranids, Yuuzhan Vong, Reapers, etc.)

In these types of games, players typically start out with a pre-existing advanced empire (with vassals/allies) and will have a bit of prep time before the swarm arrives and all hell breaks loose. The enemies in survival mode are usually endless waves or overwhelming cheats, and it'll just be a matter of time before even the best player empire succumbs.

Also survivor mode type games can take the tone of you starting out as a hopelessly pinned empire and trying to figure your way out of certain doom.

I agree that some official DLC of scenario packs would generate more interest, but a lot of times the only thing better about an official DLC is they had all the support personnel to make it a polished deal, graphics designers, writers, etc. I've played a lot of mods that were way above the quality of the official DLC that was released for games.

I'm hoping for a good mix of both myself, some official DLC and some crazy mods from the fertile minds of the community.

I would try lumping a handful of scenarios in the first or second expansion and look at the public reaction to that. If people love it maybe Paradox should release some scenario packs. If people don't seem too excited about it no harm no foul.
