Ok let me explain. It is a strawman because the point of MY OP wasn't about the definition of AAA studio. The point was that other game developers would sell the game for 10 or 20 more dollars. I WAS NOT TRYING TO DEFINE AAA GAME STUDIOS.

You said Paradox was an AAA publisher. I countered in an off-hand manner. You disagreed. I presented the numbers. I don't know what you were trying to do, but I was under the impression we were having a conversation about AAA publishers, though it may be somewhat OT for the thread.

most video game OSTs cost between 10-15€ so I think an extra 10 for the soundtrack is reasonable

+the extra race, I think the price for the nova edition is very fair

The way I look at it is that they are offering the soundtrack and ebook for 10,00$ each. That actually doesn't sound that bad to me. Not cheap by any measure, but not nearly as expensive as the OP makes it out to be.

Okay, I know I will be hated right now. You can like the content that Paradox decided to "give" you with pre-order. I don't, I think that this is a joke. Not funny joke.

Let's see, for 39,99 we get:
1. game
2. 5 species (animations+description)
3. forum avatar (yes, I know it is Blorg so it is great....)
4. your name into space... I will not even comment on that.
5. music and ringtones

But okay, this is pre-order, you are paying for the game and then we give you some free stuff. Sure, I can take it. But what do we get next?

For 49,99 we get:
1. game with pre-order bonuses (-39,99)
So for 10,00 we get:
2. Digital soundtrack
3. Forum icon
4. One alien specie.

Seriously Paradox? Seriously? Let's calculate it:

39,99 = game+5species+avatar+music
49,99 = game+5species+avatar+soundtrack+icon+specie

So this means: 39,99: game+5x+y+z 49,99: game+6x+2y+2z

AND "z" you buy already with game! You have the soundtrack! During your play and probably in the game files! (Yea I know about bonus tracks, there will be like 5 of it. Maybe little more, but look at music DLC's Paradox gives you for EU4. Their price is 2,99 at release). So for 10,00 you get 1 specie, 1 graphic and some "unique" tracks.

But, but, but! There is 69,99 version!

You get:
1. game with pre-order bonuses (-39,99)
2. Everything from Nova Edition, except icon (-10,00)
So for 20,00 you get:
3. Digital Collectors Book
4. E-book
5. Avatar
6. Icon
7. Signed desktop wallpaper (this must be joke)

Let's calculate:
For 20,00 you get: 2 digital books, 3 graphics.

So finally all this means:
39,99: game+5x+y+z 49,99: game+6x+2y+2z 69,99: game+6x+4y+2z+2r

Where:
game is game
x is specie
y is graphic (forum icon, forum avatar, wallpaper)
z is music (soundtrack and ringtones)
r is book

And let's say this: doing a specie and graphic isn't so much work. Especially forum icons and avatars. Soundtrack needs much attention but Paradox offers only few extra tracks (dunno how many, maybe 3, maybe 5) and lots of redone tracks (remixes, etc). Books however needs much attention but: artbook is something that is always done when making a game. You just put some screenshots and concept arts, write few lines of commentary below and you have artbook. Other book is digital novel that wasn't written by any on the devs, so they put no effort into this.

Now, we all love you Paradox, we all want you to do as best games as you can and we are willing to pay whatever you desire for your work. I just have constant feeling that you are trying to get all of our money giving nothing in exchange. Well, sure, signed wallpaper is fantastic! I always needed it. For 20,00.

What is my point exactly? Just look at other studios pre-order policy. Like CDP Red. They make absolutely different games than you, that's for sure. But from them I can freely buy most expensive edition and I know that I won't regret it.

Of course - you who will comment in a few moments - I don't have to buy upgraded editions ! I don't! I'm free, right? Sure I am. I was just so f.... hyped for Stellaris (still am!) and I wanted to buy best edition possible! Now I see which is the best option. I hope that my calculation helped someone.

your math is wrong, in the base edition for 40 dollars you get
1. game
2. 5 species (animations+description)
3. forum avatar (yes, I know it is Blorg so it is great....)
4. your name into space... I will not even comment on that.
5. ringtones

for 50 dollars you get
1. game with pre-order bonuses (-39,99)
So for 10,00 we get:
2. Digital soundtrack a 20 dollar value for free mind you
3. Forum icon
4. One alien specie.

so now i am paying 50 dollars for depending on how you value the game itself for anywhere between 60 and 80 dollars worth of product

and for 70 dollars you get
1. game with pre-order bonuses (-39,99)
2. Everything from Nova Edition, except icon (-20,00)
So for 20,00 you get:
3. Digital Collectors Book a 20 dollar value based off of what most game companies charge for thier art collectoin books
4. E-book another item that can be 10 dollars for a soft cover, 20 for a hard cover
5. Avatar
6. Icon
7. Signed desktop wallpaper (this must be joke) rouglhy 5-20 dollars depends on how you value any given painting

so now you are paying 70 dollars for depending on how you value the products in question anywhere between 95 and 140 dollars worth of value

i dont know seems reasonable to me and lets face it to me these are items i want compared to some things you get in a collectors editions, and at a much lower price then the 100 to 200 dollars some collectors editions will be sold at

Your break down of what is offered in each edition is inconsistent and lacking in some places. Im sure it wasnt completely intentional to suit your own opinion.

Base Edition: 39.99
Game + Creatures of the Void (CotV) + Name into space + ringtones + Blorg forum avatar (BFA)

Nova Edition: 49.99
Game + CotV + Name into space + ringtone + BFA + Soundtrack + Nova Forum Icon (NFI) + Exclusive Alien Race (EAR)

Galaxy Edition: 69.99
Game + CotV + Name into space + ringtones + BFA + Sountrack + NFI + EAR + Galaxy Forum Icon + Ebook + Digital Art Book + Wallpaper + Unique Forum Icon

Yes you argued about AAA studos, but my point wasn't that. Thats why it's a strawman arguement.

EDIT: Anyways I'm done with OT, I just dislike nitpicking.

You made an implicit statement that Paradox was an AAA publisher, a point you used to support your main argument. It's hardly nitpicking if the whole argument is severely weakened when that point is shown to be untrue.

EDIT: Ok, done now.

Well, I also didn't like most of the bonus stuff you can get... but I liked that bonus race (easily worth 0.05€ cost) and I have good faith in paradox (easily worth 9.95€ donation). So I am not worried to buy the "intermediate" priced version. It is up to you, if u wanna pay or not and no1 forces you.

The awesome thing about free markets is that if it doesn't make sense to buy one version according to your own subjective preferences, you can just buy a different one.

I too was a little underwhelmed by them.

And entirely disappointed at the still lack of a hard collector's edition.

But this is a company that has at least recently been primarily about digital distribution. I cannot speak to the earliest days of Paradox, but nowadays they primarily distribute their games digitally.

A trend the entire industry is following. And with this move away from hard boxes, this is standard fair for pre-order bonuses, a wallpaper, a digital book, the soundtrack.

Do I want a hard collectors edition yea it would be nice. But I know that these expensive collector's editions with custom made items, and statues, and faux leather maps, and only like 1,000 are made. These I've felt are never actually profitable for game companies.

Especially not now, especially not from a company so into digital distribution.

What did you want a Blorg statue? Lol how would one ever explain what that thing is.

It's about the same you pay and get for any collector's edition, still don't see what the problem is. They're never "worth it", it's just a way of showing that you're some kind of crazy obsessive fan to other crazy obsessive fans.
Pretty much this.
The e-book and soundtrack are basically just ways of thanking players who want to contribute more to PDS. If you believe in PDS so much that you wanna throw a bit extra money at them to keep 'em going they'll be nice and give you some nice insight into the development, a cool soundtrack, and a forum avatar to show you are super awesome.

If your main concern is money then buy the basic game, wait for the species to come out in an independent DLC for 3-4$ and buy it then, or ignore it all together.

This thread is pointless. Do you feel you should be getting in the $69 version for $39 or are you upset at PDS for having the temerity to offer different versions of the game because you feel compelled to always buy the most expensive version of things regardless of the value?
