Pre-ordered from a non-Steam retailer and already own CK2 in Steam? *UPDATED*

Hi, folks

I was wondering if someone in a similar position might be able to shed some light on this situation. I already owned a copy of CK2 on GamersGate and pre-ordered EUIV on GamersGate. Once I'd pre-ordered EUIV, I immediately received a second copy of CK2 in my GamersGate library, however this only appeared to offer a second serial code for the forum and didn't give me the opportunity to gift the additional copy.

I went to download EUIV this evening and registered my authentication keys for both EUIV and the Pre-order Content on Steam. As soon as I'd registered the Pre-order content, Steam started downloading another copy of CK2. I'm left wondering if this is actually my additional copy from pre-ordering EUIV through GamersGate, although the EUIV pre-order details on GamersGate state that the bonus copy of CK2 is DRM free, which Steam isn't.

I guess I'll need to contact GamersGate Support (and possibly Steam Support) to clear this up, but I thought that I probably wasn't the only person in this position.

I'd quite like to spread the CK2 love and gift this additional copy, if possible.

Now I am thinking that I should maybe have purchased it from GG despite my anger over the IGN issue a year ago.

EDIT: Just noticed that Sterness is in Ottawa, Canada, you can just give me a technical call I am in Orleans, about 15 minutes away............hehehe!

Ah, thanks very much for this. I guess I must've opened the second key for CKII without realising that it would stop me from gifting that copy in future. I suppose I should've checked the small print first!

I just tested it out and both the GamersGate and Steam version look for save files in the same place by default, my My Documents folder. Therefore, nothing has to be done; it'll find them by default.

One thing should be noted though. You need to actually boot up a game and go into the pause/Esc menu to export using the Save File Converter. Because your Steam copy will not have any DLC (besides the Save File Converter, which is a CKII DLC), it looks like you'll have to make sure you can load up your save-file as a Christian Count/Duke/King. If you wiped-out Christianity from Europe and North Africa... you might not be able to load the save file in order to convert it. (Once you get it to EUIV though, it doesn't matter who you were controlling.)

I am in exactly the same situation except that the second copy of CK2 on GG shows as giftable. Which is good, except those with an interest already tend to have it.

I do want the converter for my GG CK2. I am alarmed that Steam was DL'ing CK2 - posted this already in tech support at

Well, I had no idea what I was doing, so now I have ck2 on steam and the copy I got for free from GG when I pre-ordered EU4, so essentially I got 2 copies of CK2 for pre-ordering EU4.

Not sure that was what GG, Steam, or Paradox had in mind. What is weird, is that I have the converter for both GG and Steam because of the EU4 pre-order from GG. However, my CK2 DLC that I have from GG won't work for the steam version of CK2... confusing a little?

So, pre-ordering EU4 from GG gets me a GG ck2 and when EU4 comes out, the EU4 code is for steam (there was no forum key, the key it provided did not work for the forum registration) plus I get another copy of ck2 for steam. Kind of.. weird? I basically get $60 worth of games (2 copies of ck2) for free for pre-ordering EU4. Someone lost a lot of money in this deal, but it wasn't me. The dlc I have for my GG ck2 was all free (blue coins) but the only downer is that I can't use them for my steam version of ck2.

This situation is really weird, but I had no one I was going to gift ck2 to, so it's no big deal. The only big deal is that the dlc I got essentially for free at GG can't be used with my steam version of ck2, but I can get over it I guess.

I don't think Paradox really loses out on giving us the 2nd free copy of CKII though. We couldn't really gift it without claiming the whole "EUIV Pre-Order" package, and losing our the other preorder bonuses, could we? I mean, we have an extra CD-Key kicking around, but that's it.

Yeah, I suppose that is true. Honestly, I can live without the dlc I got for free from GG, well maybe ruler designer. I guess I can just get them later this week, I plan to get all of the major content dlc's minus the sunset invasion. So, maybe I'll grab the ruler designer when I get the other (3?) larger dlc's. The smaller ones I can get later, I think they are just flavor anyway.

Wait, did you already have DLC with GamersGate, or do you have two copies of CKII now, both of which only have the Save File Converter DLC?

I also did not receive the converter DLC, or another copy of CK2. I placed a help desk ticket, attached the receipt, and referenced this thread by URL. I hope this works; I am dying to convert save games

Steam asked if the purchase was for me, or if it was a gift. I assumed then, as I do now, that the question was for EUIV. That is for me, so I chose myself, and enjoying it so far. However, I was not given a separate option for CKII, and it now appears in my Steam library, completely useless to me, and from what I understand, untransferrable at this point according to Steam's regulations. Messaged Steam, still awaiting response.

Haven't seen anything about the savegame converter through Steam, though I haven't fired up CKII since or checked GG. Can't say I'm unhappy for preordering EUIV, but can say I'm less than thrilled with the promised bonuses and implementation of such. Not sure who to blame, so until it's resolved I'm holding all parties responsible.

Look in your Steam 'Inventory', it's a separate page somewhere. If CK2 is in there you can gift it.

No, if you didn't have CK2 on steam yet it goes to your library, not your inventory.

I am in the same situation and it sucks. I really would like to give the 2nd copy to a friend but I can't. I am stuck with two copies of CK2...

I got a free copy of CK II on both my GamersGate account and my Steam account. Since I already have CK II + DLC:s on GamersGate I gifted the 2nd copy to a friend but I´m still stuck with a useless plain CK II in my Steam library.
