By install directory, do you mean the directory you install the game to or the one you install it from? If you mean the directory you install the game to, wouldn't that only work on the same OS or even the same machine, meaning you would have to use their service if you ever wanted to install on a different machine?
You can keep the install directory and can copy it on every other computer. To install it again you need only to start the small gamersgate icon again. Then type in your username + passwort of your gamersgate account and it will check on gamersgate if they are correct. After that the game will install. So keep for your backup the install directory and your username/passwort and you will have no problems to install it anywhere.
If I understand you correctly then that would be a "no" to my question. That seems to contradict the other answer I got, so either I misunderstood one of you or one of you misunderstood me. Either way, thanks to you both for taking the time.
Maybe someone could clear up my confusion? I can't stress enough how much I'm not looking for a broader discussion on the subject. I tried to make my concerns as straightforward as possible. I'm not looking to convince anyone else or be convinced. I really only have the three questions.
edit: reading again I see what could have been unclear. I am not asking if I can back it up to avoid downloading it again. I know the answer to that, and truthfully don't really care. I mean exactly what I said: can I install it offline from said backup?

After it finishes, it asks you whether you want to keep the installation files around. As long as you choose yes to that, all you have to do is keep the launcher GG gives you, and the folder with the DL'd info in it. Burn that to a disk, and you should be fine.

Yah. If I understand you correctly you are at least the second person to misunderstand me, meaning I must not have made myself clear enough. I know you can back up files so as to avoid redownloading. I don't really care about that. I meant EXACTLY what I said: can you install the game offline with those backup files. My understanding is that you always have to log into the service to install. That seems to me to be the definition of your game being tied permanently to the download service. In this case the service we are talking about is Gamers Gate, but I'm under the impression all the others it will be available on are at least as bad.
I was pretty sure I knew the answer before I asked the question, I was just hoping someone would correct me. A couple people have, but only it seems because I didn't make myself clear in the first place. That's not to say I don't still appreciate the responses though.
I think his issue is that you still need to have an internet connection to run that exe even though it isn't downloading the game. You can also work around this though by copying the temporary folder after the game downloads but before it finishes installing (at which point it normally deletes the actual installer .exe file).
It's not 'supported' but it does work as I posted above.
Also, you can always just burn the installed game to a CD and make a new copy each time you install a patch. So even if Paradox or GG go out of business you have a fully-patched game that you can just copy to your hard drive and run.
