I won't pre-order afterall. Despite their assurances, it looks like Paradox's new DLC strategy is going to be the same sort of nickel-and-diming as everyone else has doing, and I really don't want to support this business model at this point in time.

I'll buy it as a bundle later in the year (or Paradox Pack from Steam sale).

So its the discovery that pre-ordering gets you free mongol heads that makes you not want to pre-order what you were going to pre-order until you heard about the free stuff for pre-orderers?

Graphics is what Paradox DLCs have always been this has nothign to do with the new DLC strategy, its the last appearance of the old one. And its FREE, sneaky, underhanded free but still free

What makes you say this?
Personal preference only. Maybe it's a generational thing, but I don't like microtransactions. I'm prepared to give Paradox the benefit of the doubt - I should say I still am, except I need to see how it pans out first. I'm sure I'll enjoy all the content once I buy it as a bundle or special.

So its the discovery that pre-ordering gets you free mongol heads that makes you not want to pre-order what you were going to pre-order until you heard about the free stuff for pre-orderers?

Yes - I would have pre-ordered if there was no bonus at all.

As for your attitude, I'm not being aggressive or critical of anyone else's point of view, not even Paradox really - so I'd appreciate the same courtesy.

theres no attitude mate, no worries, its just with text theres no inflection in the voice so its hard to tell. I was confused and so asking, not offended and attacking so no stress. there are wee pictures for that where you put a : and then a letter to make a wee face so people know what sort of voice youd be using if you was talking instead of typing but ive never been able to get the hang on them.

Also it probably wont be in a bundle, i dont think any of the V2 DLCs which were all just unit graphics got bundled, and right now its free if you preorder. and later on youll have to buy it, or risk waiting for something that might never exist. If there is a CK2 bundle itll probably be all the expansions, not the tiny graphics DLC that no one will think of. Does EU3 have tiny DLCs? And if so were they in the Chronicles? i dont know if it has any, but if it does then that would be the thing to check to see if its worth waiting for CK2 to do the same with its tiny DLCs.

I dont think anyone likes microtransactions [means little transactions right?] but the thing is, if you preorder you dont have to on account of how its free.

No dramas. And if anyone is wondering I'm not trying to be inflammatory. I posted because I think Paradox deserve to know what their customers are thinking when they choose or choose not to pre-order.

no worries i dont think anyone thinks you are so youre alright.
Only I dont know if anyone from paradox would be reading this though, as its quite long and they work there so i guess dont have to preorder it owing to being able to get it from the factory shop as it were so wouldnt be looking here for information as it how to or how best to go about the pre-ordering.

Same here. I´d discovered the game recently, and I was interested int it. I thought Paradox was above all that "things that should be in the game are now dlc", as all DLC for games like HoI3 are either really "extra" or fan-made.

However selling dinasty shields for the most important families in a game about dinasties is like selling you the car and then making the windows DLC.

At the end it´s not important for me, I will buy the game all the same, just instead of doing it now, I will buy when there´s some of that ridiculous offers in Steam or GG, game and all DLC for 5€ or something like that, just like I´ve done with other games.

Nothing lost here.

Wow, $2 to play with historical coats of arms? So starting up as a Plantagenet will cost me more money?? Didn't take long for you to jump down the monetization hole did it Paradox?

No. Its free for everyone that pre-order. Its included in the game for free for everyone that pre-orders through the channels that handles DLC's.

We've always done music and cosmetics for dlc's, as they are not "things removed from the game", but something that can be developed by external people, which these have been.

What does this mean?
I want the game from steam, and I want the preorder bonus. What do I have to do?

According to the information I have, it should be on Steam as pre-order bonus when the Steam pre-order goes live.

When I talk about DLC I don´t mean about format. I´ve donwloaded every game I´ve bought since LOTRO, and that´s about 4 years ago.

With DLC I mean smalls amount of content sold by small amount of money. Usually the price is very small, and the content even smaller, but being just 1-2 € people doesn´t notice.

When it´s things like sprite packs, or extra music, I don´t care, but when it´s something I feel should be in the game from the beginning I just wait and buy later. That way I don´t have to buy soemthing every other month t get what I think it´s the complete experience, and it´s cheaper as a bonus.

I agree with you. Thats why we added graphical "extras" which were not originally planned for CK2.

There´s something the new policy doesn´t explain, what about big gameplay changes, like new or largely revamped game mechanics?

That used to go in expansions. Will it be the same now? Will they be modular an in DLC too? Or will be that just in new iterations of the games?

I suppose there is some balance between providing additional content for their games that would not have been produced otherwise and asking a small fee for it and just hacking a game up in pieces to sell every pixel separately for maximum profit.

Some companies are no doubt doing the later and just looking at the next quarterly financial report. But with Paradox I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and trust them on this DLC thing until they prove otherwise. No matter how much we usually complain about patches and things they do after all have a quite good track record of listening to the community and giving us good and very reasonably priced games. I don't think it would make sense for them to just throw away the kind of longterm fanbase they have built up on going greedy evil megacorp overnight and just moneygrab all they can for a single release like there was no tomorrow.

Personally I would have been just as happy if they would have put it all in the main release instead and raised the price $4. That may even have made them more profit since I may not consider some facepack important enough to order it separately..
But once the game is out they will hopefully come with more expansion-like DLC:s and if they will produce the same value for money that Paradox games/expansions has given us so far over the years I have no worries at all about the DLC. So let them do it if they feel it's good for them and if it gives us more game content in the end it's a win-win.

But what is "small"? DLCs for Modern Warefare or Battlefield cost 9-19€. The past Paradox Expansion cost 9-19€.

It was said, large gameplay changes are free and come with a free patches, probably accompanied with DLCs that use these changes. As far as I understand, DLC will be very focused on a specific theme and don't include big gameplay changes.
I guess this system used on V2, the American civil war scenario and the new sprites would be a DLC and the rest (like crafting CBs, the new unciv model, the new political system [suppressions] and the foreign industry investment) would be in a free patch.

That´s subjetive. For me, FPS map packs are the definition of "bad DLC": 5% of the game content, 30% of the game prices. Enough for me to avoid FPS multi, except RO2, which seems out of that crap (with mods for extra benefit)

The usual DLC for paradox games I consider small too: sprite packs, music, etc..

I don´t consider small things like HttT for EU3 or Sempe Fi for Hoi3. They have enough serious gameplay changes to be considered expansions.

It was said, large gameplay changes are free and come with a free patches, probably accompanied with DLCs that use these changes

I guess you mean this:

"We want to do everything we can to patch a game for longer, with monthly updates including bugfixes, sure, but also AI improvements, gamebalance, and even new features. "

If it´s like you say, and you don´t need the DLCs to make new features interesting, it will be a good thing.
