We have Europa Universalis 4 as post-CKII, it would be fun having a pre-CKII one aswell that goes perhaps roman/antiquatte era and how it worked.

There is a (pretty old) game called Europa Universalis: Rome. It's not great, IMHO, though.

And that would be praising it IMO. It was basically EU lite with some minor CK elements thrown in but was just too simplified that it didn't have any unique or memorable features (Rome didn't even have senate until VV).

Europa Rome was a great idea, but too rushed in its design, much like Sengoku. The original Victoria was pretty messed up too and Paradox finally came out with a version that worked pretty well; basically a reworked version rather than a sequel.

It would be pretty cool if they would do the same with EU Rome and this time extend it beyond the original timeline (the rise of Caesar). After all, the Rome most people think about is the one starting with Augustus and the eventual split into two empires. Using CK2 mechanics, a EU Rome II that started the timeline where the original one did and allowed play down until where CK2 starts (or pretty close) would be pretty cool. It would have to allow for a Rome that could change religious systems (with the usual complications of changing religions) and government types; and it would need to have several bookmarked times: The beginning of Rome, The Rise of Augustus, Constantine the Great, and The Great Split (where the empires officially split) plus a couple of others.

It would also need flavor events and decisions so that a player could really be immersed in the struggles as the people demanded more entertainment, religious struggles beginning, being able to be a part of the religious struggle on either side to promote the upcoming religion or trying to support the old one, etc...

Problem is that the game being so long in a timeline would make it difficult to enjoy unless the game had some other struggles to it; say, politics, religions, more difficulty keeping the empire together the larger it is and harder to conquer additional lands as it reached certain sizes? Because Rome took on most of the known world and beyond long before its decline and nobody wants to play as a declining empire.

So I hope that PD develops a EU Rome II someday and allows it to go at least 200 years AD as a Caesar. But, it's probably not going to be all that much fun to use it as the pre-CK2 game. Which means that another game would have to be created between the two timelines and what would its purpose be? Play as the Huns? Try and restore the Roman Empire while it still was stronger (probably too easy to be any fun)? Maybe a whole different kind of a game that focused on the barbarian's side trying to fight against the advancement of Christianity, working on chinking away at the failing empire and something that was more focused on the Vikings.

In any event, it's all theoretical. CK2 just can't handle much more in the way of expansions unless PD can find a way to fix the memory lag problem. And, PD has its hands full with its many titles including HOI4. It's really, really unlikely that they will consider working on another title, let alone reworking an old one at this point.

Making Rome fun could be a bit difficult though...Of course you could start from the beginning of the empire and try to build it on your own, but then it'd be mainly just a wargame without much internal stuff. Unless they can make it crazygood and make both aspects amazing. And playing as a prospering Rome...that's just beating up picts and barbarians and internal stuff...which as a said must be veryvery good to actually make it a fun game.

On the other hand...So far PI has made games about empires and dynasties rising. It would be fun to see a game that deals specifically with empires/empire declining and falling apart. Smelly hordes migrating and taking over, emperors losing control, balance of power radically shifting...I would love that. Especially if it could be ported to CK2 afterwards.

But they are working on another title...Project Augustus. It's said to not be a sequel.

I didn't know they were working on something like that. I don't know how they find the time to do all they do. Best wishes to that project and my hats off to PD for being willing to venture into new titles and themes.

Smelly hordes migrating and taking over, emperors losing control, balance of power radically shifting...I would love that. Especially if it could be ported to CK2 afterwards.

I have always loved the concept too. But when faced with it in various games I have ultimately given up playing because it goes against my grain too much to know I am losing. If anyone could make it fun, though, PD could.

Pretty much what I was getting at too. It would have to be pretty amazing to keep it from getting boring fast. Building Rome up from scratch like the original EU Rome would still be fun. But, the middle game would be very boring with very little to do (not much in the way of conquest and no other tribe would stand a chance). Playing the end game would be fun as the barbarians only.

What is this Project Augustus anyways??? Can anyone lead me to where to find out more info? It sounds interesting. Is it a mod? Is it something actually being worked on right now or maybe a possible future project not yet started?

http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum...u-please-tease-what-Project-Augustus-could-be

There is no real information about what it is, but Doomdark said in that thread, that he is running Project Augustus. So I think they're working on it already, but it's too early stages to be announced. But the fact that Project Augustus exists is known for a while now. I first heard about it a few months ago, but I reckon it's been known even longer than that. We can only hope that at some point not long in the future, they'll start giving us hints, like they've done with other games before actual announcment.
