Very, very nice AAR. Technical analysis is great for people who suck at Vicky like me.

If I may ask, how is German Unification handled in Vicky? I use 0.1 myself and tried to look into the event chains, but I've gotten myself hopelessly confused. I know that some chains are added, but I couldn't find anything very helpful in the Vicky forum on in the CORE/VIP site.

Sorry for asking you to just explain what's probably a very complicated process in the mod.

Somehow, I don't think the Spa Telegram was a geopolitical change.

Tensions had been building between France and Prussia ever since the defeat of Austria and the formation of the North German Confederation in 1866. If not the Ems Dispatch, there would have been a casus belli found (esp given how cack-handed Napoleon III was in his foreign policy - he had almost obliged in the Luxembourg Crisis of 1867-1868) and had the Prussians defeated the French the momentum towards German unity would have resulted in a united German state of some sort.

Once you have the Prussians humiliated at Olmutz in 1850 by the Habsburgs, there is a strong move within Prussia to get revenge and push the Habsburgs out of dominance of German affairs. And once the Habsburgs are eliminated, French fears of the rising new power on its borders were more than likely going to lead to conflict. Ems Dispatch provided the spark, but the fuel for the conflagration that struck in 1870 was already on the ground, waiting for the right match to light it.

This isn't to say Bismarck wasn't important in the process in how the particulars evolved in the process, but the broad trends promoting the idea of uniting the various German states into one State structure were there well before Bismarck arrived on the scene and had not dissipated one bit by the time he became Chancellor in 1862 and in a sense hijacked the movement to serve his own internal Prussian political agenda. Why should it be any different for a liberalizing, modernizing Prussian king? In fact, I'd argue it should be easier for such a leader to harness the energies than Bismarck faced.

Of course, this would likely be better discussed in the history forum.

Also based on my own prussia/germany game that OHGamer inspired me to play I have made it to 1870 and unified germany and the only penalty I seem to have been given for not supporting bismarcks counter coup is not getting the 200(100?) prestige you get in vanilla for appointing him but whether that is down to declining the coup or just that the event was removed in VIP I dont know

I never got this coup event in my games as Germany, how does it trigger?

Two different events in scenarios/VIPscen/events/vanilla/Prussia.txt

the first one has the trigger :

Code:
	trigger = {
		NOT = { constitution = { country = PRU type = monarchy } }
		random = 15
	}

and the other has

Code:
	trigger = {
		NOT = { constitution = { country = PRU type = monarchy } }
		random = 5
	}

both have as their date window

Code:
	date = { day = 1 month = january year = 1848 }
	offset = 48
	deathdate = { day = 30 month = december year = 1851 }

They differ in having the options of whether to support or repress reversed as a or b choice, and the one firing will sleep the other.

Since both have low random elements there is the chance that they will not fire in a game even if PRU is not a monarchy

That chance is vanishingly small if PRU is not a monarchy through the whole window though. Each chance is fairly low, but it will check enough times that the odds of neither event occuring in those four years is about 1/6th of one percent. So if you wish to follow this path as Prussia, one of the coup events is virtually assured to happen.

A very interesting way of playing Prussia. In my games with Prussia I almost never can resist the military oppurtunities.

Do you have some territorial goals? Unifying Germany? Conservative Empire? Or even melting Germany and Austria into a greater empire?

i laid out some ideas at the start of the AAR.

And I've not gone completely peaceful - the Danes can attest to that :D

What I'm looking to achieve geopolitically

1) Historical Unification of Germany via the wars of the 1860s
2) Dispatching the Habsburg Prison of Nations, creating satellites of the non-German regions and likely integrating the German regions into the German Empire. Russia *may* get the same treatment.
3) Limited colonization to historical areas, unless the French post 1870 insist on revanchism, then their colonial empire will be fair game. Maintaining the alliance with the Netherlands, which has Belgium as a satellite, should help discourage France post-1870 from doing anything too stupid in Europe (hence also why Russia may be kept as friendly rather than a target). This policy calls also for maintaining very good relations with Britain, which I have already started to do (and being a Con-Mon helps here). I may also consider developing a working relationship with Japan after German unification and Meiji.
4) Fishing in New World waters might be considered, already constructing a naval base in Puerto Rico. Will depend on how things develop first in Europe.

Concerning Puerto Rico I just thought you took it out of economic reasons not as a (naval) base to conquer the americas.

The two are mutually exclusive ?? ;)

Actually I do subtly intimate in my 1839 update that Puerto Rico might have uses other than providing timber in the long term.

Then there is the strategic benefit. Prussia has aspiration of becoming a global power in the future. A presence in the Americas based on Puerto Rico would provide Prussia with a potential naval base from which to influence the development of politics in the region to ensure Prussian interests are secured.
