Wind already has big advantages over using solar and batteries, making batteries worse by diminishing their output isn't going to help the gameplay, it'd just make wind farms the answer to everything.

Next people are going to want to change weight to mass :)

At one time in the life of the game the Concrete Extractor was actually named Regolith Extractor. After all, it doesn't extract Concrete directly, right? The result was that new users were very confused and couldn't figure out which building is responsible for the resource they need. Concrete Plant would've also been a more descriptive name, but we wanted the building to share mechanics with our other extractor buildings.

When possible we strive to name buildings after the specific in-game resources they are dedicated to. Since the resource is called Power, the building was named Power Accumulator (although it was called just Accumulator earlier and Battery even earlier).

We already have an in-game parameter for efficiency of energy storage, so modding a more realistic battery would be trivial. We kept it at 100% for ease of use (it is really hard calculating your Power balance when it is lowered).

There are many people who play paradox games just for the spreadsheets. It changes nothing in the gameplay of the average player and I could code it in 5 minutes (edit: and I'm not even adept at programming).

I am adept at programming and I'd love to see you do a proper job of it in that timescale - including all the program compliation, testing and documentation updates...

I get the point, it does add to the calculus but I'm not sure how many people will be open to it. Even if you overtly stated that for every 5 energy you put into the battery you got 4 energy out, I'm not sure people will see that as a positive (game play experience). I'm not one of them, it makes it more interesting--but from what it looks like here, some are not for it.

I agree that most will not like a powerdimishing feature. I think it doesn´t have a place in a vanilla version of SM. And as the dvelopers point out, there is a variable for power efficiansy, so it will be rather easy to mod it. Even possible to just use the same batteryimage and just modify the builiding propriety to 90% efficiant. Sounds like and the best way to do.

Just like I ain´t complaining over technologies who will work marsians to death (working seniors), or free cables and pipes, as it´s good game design. I do not complain about this. Those features and techs are very easy to just stop researching.

We already have an in-game parameter for efficiency of energy storage, so modding a more realistic battery would be trivial. We kept it at 100% for ease of use (it is really hard calculating your Power balance when it is lowered).

I see a lot of hate for what appeared to be a reasonable suggestion. Power != energy. It's a basic definition. The OP proposed a number of alternative names that were still understandable and also happened to be scientifically plausible.
That doesn't mean that games can't deviate from scientific exactitude, but in this case the original proposal seemed fairly non-conflictual. I'm not sure why so many people appeared to be offended by that and, as a scientist myself, it makes be a bit sad. I mean, we live in times where "who needs experts!" seems to be a rallying cry.

If the average Joe or Jane doesn't understand the definition of power or energy, then we should explain and educate. Many might not care (and that's fine, I don't care much about the intricacies of financial derivatives or the exact meaning of a semi-tone and many other things) - but I don't expect people to accept my lack of care or knowledge as being correct.

Apologies for the rant.

Why was the resource called power instead of energy in the first place?

I don't particularly care, but I would lean towards energy/energy accumulator as a preference.

Yes god forbid we try and get the science right in a Sci-Fi game. While I understand why the dev's named it the way they did, this hate for the OP is just silly.

Speed and acceleration are actually quite different. You probably meant speed and velocity, as many people don't understand the difference and easily confuse the two. (In a nutshell, velocity is speed and direction combined.)
Speed and acceleration are the same thing the same way power and energy are the same thing.

Wind already has big advantages over using solar and batteries, making batteries worse by diminishing their output isn't going to help the gameplay, it'd just make wind farms the answer to everything.
This is a fair criticism, thank you.

Thanks for the reply. While I understand your point of view, wouldn't you agree that 99% of people never heard of "Regolith" while almost everyone (at least in this thread) assumes that power and energy are basically the same thing?

Thanks for the great work, the game really fleshed out nicely.

I am adept at programming and I'd love to see you do a proper job of it in that timescale - including all the program compliation, testing and documentation updates...
The post above you proves you wrong.

So the point of the original post is "Look at me, see how smart I am?

right?
Next up we'll have a thread on Weight vs Mass and then Speed vs. Velocity.
I feel sorry for your peers, mate.

Speed and acceleration are the same thing the same way power and energy are the same thing.

My confusion with your post was that you said people would confuse speed and acceleration the same way they would with power and energy.

However, I can't think of anyone I know who doesn't get the difference between speed and acceleration. Speed and velocity on the other hand? Most people I know would not consider them different at all. Which would have made a much better example if you are trying to say that people don't know the difference between power and energy.

I agree with you when it comes to the number of people who are confused but my point was in the relation between the two.
Hope that clears it out.

I'm sure the name will be moddable if this is an issue for you. I also know the difference but for the rest of the mere mortals the current name is fine. Personally, I really don't care as I just want to play the game. So long as I know what the building is and what it's for they can call it whatever they like.

Thank you. The difference between the two is HUGE and should be remedied.
But if you look carefully, there's a short part at the end about changing the mechanics of how the batteries themselves work.

Ummm. Power = Current x Voltage (P=IE).. The storage unit contains, essentially, both. Thus why not simply call it Power? Neither a stretch or inaccurate. I figure Paradox got it right and simply call it a battery. We do not even know if it is a storage capacitor or not. Check with NASA for a more scientific explanation. Maybe an 'Energy Battery' might be more to your approval?

Speed and acceleration are basically the same thing, right? Since they both have to do with motion.

What I'm saying is just because some people are illiterate doesn't mean we should stop writing.

Well, to be factual, acceleration and decelaration are the changes in speed. Speed is actual and accel/decal derivative. I am curious if you complain to the Power Company when your 'Power Bill' arrives. Lets face it, this conversation seems a little silly and tends to lead to forum combat. It is really not a big deal for a game.
