With The Republic, we'll gain the ability to create merchant republics as feudal lords. With this being the case, where do you think will be good places to create them?

Since trade zones will have diminishing returns as they get larger, we can assume we'll need more than one. We can also assume that AI Republics will try to create Trade Posts starting where they have influence - either by their home duchy, or by cities they control in other areas. By this assumption, we can then "Direct" the spread of a Republic when setting them up by giving them cities outside their duchy.

We can also assume that we'll want to give them small duchies (2-county) with both counties having ports.

Aden: probably the largest COT in the area
Muscat: another, smaller but still important COT

As far as I'm aware, Republics have to A) Be coastal and B) Be duke-level (or above) to be playable. Since there is a major lack of titular duchies, you obviously don't want to be handing say, Flanders over to a vassal doge. It makes a much better demense.

A) Im hoping Paradox will rule the coastal=playable thing with a is_coastal modifier, so you can easily signal a province anywhere as coastal and make a playable republic. This would allow for the representation of river trade. Plus, Switzerland.

B) The obvious solution would be to include several titular titles for historical republics with the expansion that you can create and give to your doges to make them playable. I doubt Paradox will do this tough, since they seem so gung-ho on forcing us to play those 5 republics, but thankfully the flavorful titular titles mod by zeress already does this anyway.

The gash is actually there, just not as pronounced — it's the mouth of the River Elbe. While Hamburg's not actually »coastal«, this is the only way to represent an inland harbour within the limitations of the engine.

The most interesting thing about that map is that you can see the old Frisian coastline! Much of today's Wattenmeer was perfectly habitable in 1066. The region even has its own Atlantis.
