I'm not sure if these are bugs, so I thought I'd bring up two things I noticed just now here first:

I. Naval battle bugged mid-save?

EA52B8B95B901069192555F33CB00EA67354D790

I'm not sure if this is a bug or a just an interface issue, but I saved and quit, and reloaded later, at the start of this battle. While I've noticed consistent interface issues every time I reload (I usually just ignore it until it goes away), I'm not sure if reloading suddenly mid-battle may have had an effect, or if it's just an interface issue

II. Ottoman galleys?

D2274C308A3041359BF3E92ECF06FB03234F535E

related to the naval battle earlier, I've noticed this for a long time now, but are these event ships? Not only are they suspiciously similar and oddly not-merged together as the AI tends to do, but the AI Ottomans are also way over their FL. By that I mean 100 ships over their FL. Is this scripted behavior for the Ottomans or an oddity with the AI's choice of actions?

(and yeah, if you do want to ask, I declared war on them for the specific purpose of killing this uber galley-spam. and apparently, their 100+ galleys obliterated 90% of my navy in the naval battle I posted above):wacko:

The 1st one is an old bug, but it's purely inteference. If You save mid-battle and reload it would produce vast numbers, both in naval and land battles
2nd they can have scripted to be above FL, just like France is alway above land FL. But the fact they're not merging it is weird.
Also: 100 over FL means being 1/3 over FL? 1/2? 1/4? It would be weird if they had 100 FL and another 100 atop of that, but if they have 400 and 100 over FL it looks ok. Galleys are cheap.

regarding the first one, does that mean then that I lost "fairly" according to the game mechanics then? are galleys really that powerful in inland seas? just how do I defeat that navy then?

as for the second, their FL is roughly 150+, while they have roughly 250+ ships. if it's scripted, then I guess that'd make sense (though wouldn't their economy tank? IIRC going over FL is computer per SLOT, not per ship type, so that's got to be expensive (or I'm probably miscomputing it @_@). It's still odd that they're not merging their galleys though

Going over FL makes navy maintanence more expensive multiplicatively, ie. 2x FL= 2x maintenance. Since galleys are very cheap in maintenance, it is possible that they can afford to have almost 2x the FL. Especially since Ottos economy got significant boost in 1.8 (constantinopole trade node is RIIIIICH!!1).
As for "how to manage this": the easiest way (not easy though) is kicking them on land, and geting coastal provinces/forcing them to realease nation with such. Though You'd need quite an amount of MA's.

AH. I see. I always thought going over FL is a static cost increase per FL independent of aggregate naval maintenance. And here I was always worried keeping my forces below/just at FL.

But yeah, since I realized I lost fair and square, I decided to carry on and get back at them exactly how they defeated me as well, with these results:

39B60FE58D860B55E961600BB82ADDC84A40B8B0

Makes for an interesting story. On the 16th of March 1630 the entire European fleet of France was crushed by 120+ Ottoman galleys. Seven years later, almost their fleet in turn would be crushed by 160+ French galleys. Sweet revenge

That said, I have no idea of course if they'll rebuild their massive galley armada. I should probably completely siege down their entire realm and push their WE to the brink to make sure that doesn't happen for several decades I guess.

A question though, does privateering reducing enemy/rival income directly? Or does it simply increase your income (spoils of war)? I can't see any effect on trade nodes (ie. my privateering doesn't seem to affect trade power of my rivals).

It reduces their income by a lot more then what you're getting from it, provided they would be in roughly complete control of the node without the privateering. Privateering creates a 'pirate' nation that is collecting in that node, which you should be able to see on the pie chart in the trade node's window. You only get 40% of what they collect, so 2.5 times as much is being removed from the node, largely from your enemy.
