Part XVI - A price too high
1st Mar 1945 - We spent the winter in Northern Italy, holding our new positions. Bad weather prevented both sides from attacking.
21st Mar 1945 - Four mountain divisions landed in Albania; On 14th they captured Tirana and moved on.
The picture shows Australian 105 mm howitzer supporting the first assault on Vlore.
26th Mar 1945 - It took five days of heavy fighting, but the Italian military presence in Albania is gone.
Amongst the 18,000 casualties was Major General Edmund F. Herring, KCMG, KBE, CBE, DSO, MC, commander of the 3rd Mountain division.
24th May 1945 - In desperate attempt, Italians attacked our positions near Verona. We were able to beat them back with little trouble. The defence of the Adige river was the last time I have seen combat.
10th Jun 1945 - Australian counterattack routed retreating Italians. The very last Italian important city - Venice - was captured.
12th Jun 1945 - Italy oficially surrendered. The country was now run by Australian military administration.
The picture shows Benito Mussolini formally handing his sword over to Field Marshall sir Thomas Blamey.
15th Jun 1945 - A disaster struck Venice - two motorized divisions were totally annihilated by German airstrikes. After the Italian surrender, Australia felt the wrath of Luftwaffe.
Our fighters were swept out of the skies and hundreds and hundreds of Stukas butchered the ground forces. The 4th (Mot.) and 5th (Mot.) Divisions were lost and never replaced.
We evacuated Venice and it was captured by Germans a few days later.
The fight for Italy is over. They resisted for only 14 months, killing 11,940 Australians and wounding another 22,000. Unfortunately, German bombers managed to add another 20,000 casualties to the count.
