I suppose that makes a lot of sense. Diminishing returns and all that. So essentially I need to find ways of kicking up more worth in the earlier nodes and it should grow with each node it passes through, correct?

The best way would likely be increasing your global trade power and actively trying to destroy the trade power of your competitors. In other words, take high trade power provinces, destroy their navies, embargo them if they are your rivals.

@Myrten: Awesome! Think you'll manage 15k until 1821? There should be a +20% bump in TE in Tech. Also, don't those four embargoes hurt you? Since you can only set three rivals.
I think it's possible since I lag on diplo tech and there are still many leaks, although AI can mess things up so we will see :)

BTW what was your naval force limit in your Spain game, I saw very small maintenance cost on your screenshot in Hall of Fame thread

When do you get high income from trade?
I'm in 1540 now with the trade nodes set up nicely from Nippon to Seville. I got 3k from the Aztecs and spammed light ships, but my trade income never outmatches the naval upkeep.
Do I have to wait longer?
How do you start your trade route?
Quality of ships matters, I waited for researching Heavy Frigate in my Hansa game before creating full route.

Going from Aden -> Suez -> Istanbul -> Ragsua -> Venice is only 2 nodes shorter than
Aden -> Zanzibar -> Cape -> Congo -> Ivory Coast -> Mauritanian Coast -> Seville, so there is no reason why your income can't be half what Spanish people post.

I'd have said it should be more than half as the length isn't everything. Length doesn't take into account the advantages of being at an end node (you don't need thousands of ships to reduce sniping down to a few hundred a month) and your national ideas which should supercharge your trading. It also doesn't take into account that some of the African nodes tend to find it hard to attract any merchants.
It's not Ivory Coast -> Mauritanian Coast -> Seville, it's Ivory Coast -> Timbuktu -> Tunis -> Genoa -> Seville - 4 nodes longer means that income in Seville alone can be 4.5 times larger than in Venice (9 times larger in Antwerpen - best spot ffor capital :) )

Myrten, impressive trade empires!!

1. I'm in a Hansa game myself, what was your keys to dominate trade like that? Do you steer from Ivory coast to the carribean instead of making it go through Sevilla?

2. How early can you get to China and how did you get to China fast?

3. In what order do you pick your idea groups? I went with exploration first for a colony and stepping stone on Cape Verde. Probably taking a military idea second as the Hansa troop quality need a boost and to spend military points.

1) I go Ivory>Timbuktu>Tunis>Genoa>Seville>Bordeaux>London>Antwerpen
2) I went there around 1650s (+- 20 years), I got china by diploanexing forced or released vassals for which I've conquered land.
3) I've started with Diplomacy and waged revolutionary wars on half of Europe :p, after that I went after Exploration, Plurality. Rest is all other ideas from diplo group and Offensive. Now I'm thinking between Espionage and Quantity as last idea.
Can anyone kindly explain to me in detail how does this trade system work? I'm very, very confused how the "chain" works.
Just read this thread carefully from the beginning, it's not that long.

My naval force limit was 2152 at the end. Through much of the 18th century, I put every diplo point I had to spare (and I had to spare a lot since I had spent the last two-hundred years on military and administrative ideas instead of diplo ones) into building Naval Bases throughout Spanish Europe and the Americas. Since I had +100% from Grand Navy and +10% from the navigation act, I ended up with almost laughably low maintenance cost.

Wow that's pretty huge, which diplo ideas you haven't took?

BTW
Have you seen anywhere a good explanation how maintenance cost for over the limit works?

I actually took all of them -- however, when I started with diplomatic ideas I was already mostly done building the bases and only worked on trade buildings in my Asian tradeposts. Most of my building work was done when I was working on Economy and Offensive idea groups with a 5-star and a 4-star diplo king. Plus I made it my business to own as many "important centre of trades" (or such) as possible, which helped due to each giving, uh, 4.2 force limit. Eventually, I mostly got lucky with my rulers.

I don't know. Thought it was exponential, like colony maintenance?

I don't know, how it is effectively done.

I put my 7 merchants in those centers, where multiple routes go downstream to controll the steering. I am moving goods from ceylon > aden > zanzibar > good hope > congo > ivory coast > caribbean > chesapeake > london (playing ireland in posession of whole britain and ireland). i also get trade from peru, panama, mexico and mississippi to the caribbean. i am in all nodes the best of the best. still i only extract about 140+ in london. over 160 early frigates (thanks to a very generous inca nation) help with trade steering.

Is it because it is just the early 17th century and my trade values and trade buildings are not so widespread?

trade.jpg

Edit: Just increased income by 30 in one month by colonizing the adamans and putting some ships into the bengal node to get cash out of there. now my malacca ships also make sense. :)

Production manufacturers in India, China and Malaysia contribute to a massive amount!

There still is plenty of time left in this game so I expect the final results to be higher.

Route is - China > Ceylon > Indus [no steering]> Gulf of Aden > Ivory Coast > Caribbean > Chesapeake Bay > London [Collection]

Dafuq you are doing in China o_O

Isn´t due to chinese goods you have so much trade income?
Well I've build manufactories there and showed Chinese people how to be good German Protestants :D This increased trade value there quite a lot, more than 100 TV leaves China to Malacca.

After my world conquest Hansa attempt I modded myself enough ruler points to build all the trade buildings in each of my provinces to see how ridiculous trade can actually get. Here are the results:

Monthy Trade Income:21,882.32

Route (With 11 Merchants):
1) Hangzhou to Malacca
2) Ceylon to Indus
3) Indus to Gulf of Aden
4) Gulf of Aden to Zanzibar
5) Cape of Good Hope to Congo
6) Congo to Ivory Coast
7) Ivory Coast to Caribbean
8) Caribbean to Chesapeake Bay
9) Chesapeake to North Sea
10) North Sea to Lubeck
11) Lubeck to Antwerpen

Trade Efficiency: 137.0% (This could be 5% better if I didn't pass the mining act)
Trade Income: 219.5% (With a temporary booming economy)

I doubt this will work in practice. By the time I captured all the nodes in question, I didn't have enough time left to finish buying the buildings without modding in the points. It does represent a value close to the upper limit, however.

Funnily enough, I actually got the booming economy buff because this much trade income caused my cash to wrap around to the negatives and I automatically took out all the possible loans to compensate. I then got a mission to reduce inflation with the booming economy reward.

Top 10 Trade Good Values: (spamming Customs Houses raises new world goods drastically)
1) Chinaware: 13.92
2) Tea: 13.62
3) Tobacco: 12.85
4) Spices: 12.55
5) Wine: 11.55
6) Ivory: 9.97
7) Cotton: 9.03
8) Sugar: 7.50
9) Coffee: 7.50
10) Fur: 7.50

How do you get 11 merchants and easiest way to form a republic:). I guess it is easier with a larger nation like England?

Start: 2 Merchants
Trade Idea: 3 Merchants
Expansion Idea: 1 Merchant
Plutocratic Idea: 1 Merchant
India Trade Company Decision: 1 Merchant
Merchant Republic: 1 Merchant
Confirm Thallocracy (Merchant Republic Idea): 1 Merchant
The Hansa Ideas: 1 merchant

England could get 10 if they convert to a merchant republic (diplomacy cb a republic then lose and convert to noble republic... You get a decision to convert to merchant)

England has an easier time conquering the route. Hansa does get the best trade ideas and decisions in the game though I think.
