Why does the ping-pong combat still exist? No one liked it in EU3, so why it bring it back?

It's just stupid that I have to chase ONE unit around the empire, defeating it 30 times before it actually dies. Even worse if it's a single Horse archer or something.

Hoo boy.

It was fun, although the game scenario is not even remotely my style. I hate starting with big empires when I've never played the game before, because the bigger your nation is, the worse things tend to get when you aren't doing the necessary things to keep the nation running properly.

To dump you right into the middle of a huge war, that just made it worse. =P

If I hadn't played EU3 already, I wouldn't have had a clue what was going on, and getting stomped by Carthage is no way to introduce someone to the game. So... I assume this is more a demo for the hardcore EU3 players, and not so much for the people new to the series.

Anyway, after some back and forth with Carthage I managed to get a white peace down so that I could explore the game a bit more thoroughly. I ended up leaving a rather large stack of units in Africa, with a general who turned out to be pretty awesome, but over the course of the war, his loyalty dropped to zero. So now I can't get him home at all, because I can't split up the units, and there's no way I am building that many ships just for him.

I really like the idea of disloyal generals refusing to give up command, and it presents some really interesting scenarios, but there could maybe be a safeguard against self-trapped unit stacks sitting on the wrong continent, in someone else's turf. ;) I'd try to increase his loyalty, but I can't seem to find a way to do that. Is it possible to give gifts to characters?

Some UI issues: I really miss being able to press space to pause the game. The pause button on the interface is tiny at 1600x1200, and I find myself struggling to pause the game at key moments. Also, I noticed that there's more than a few events that tell you something is happening, but don't indicate very well who or where(I think this would be less noticeable with a smaller nation). It'd be nice if there was a built in go-to link in every message that refers to a person or place. Some of them have it, but not all. It should be all. Oh, and there -really- needs to be a way to access all of the characters without having to be placing a governer or what have you. I couldn't find away to just 'browse' them all, if there is one.

I think there was more, but anyway. I'll post again later when I've played it more.

Good work though, I think I'll pre-order it after all.

Well, you can use Pause/Break key in your keyboard for now if you don't want to mess around with your files.

National ideas are linked to tech development. There are ways to steer one's nation, beyond national ideas: being provided some rather unique choices, as time advances.

It's not a linking. It's a simple dependacy of number of avaliable slots on a certain tech level. True and reasonable liking would be like this: imagine, that after years of gameplay a certain nation clearly favoures land techs and is already at 20 level, but completely neglects navy techs and is only at 5 level. And then an event or something triggers that prohibits it to choose naval-wise National Ideas, to represent mindset of society completely turned towards land combat and ethos. And vice versa - depending on a direction a nation evolves new possibilities are opened. This would be a true system. Also government type could somehow decide on what NIs you can take and what not.

Bah as Paradox moves along they keep doing the exact same mistakes...

1. The interface is total crap. It's poorly designed, cumbersome, ineffective and actually makes a lot of simple tasks like building armies annoying.

example : you want to build 3 armies in 3 different provinces well once you opened the army menu in one province, if you click in another it closes the menu!

Tip : since the game was designed for PC, maybe make a use of the RIGHT MOUSE BUTTON?!?

What about user defined keyboard shortcuts since the paradox team seems totally unable to define convenient ones... Seriously guys "pause", "+" "-" can't you come up with smarter stuff after hoi 1,2 eu 1,2,3 ck victoria...

2. The graphics are bad and would benefit from more clarity. What's the point of a 3d map if you know you're going to play in national view 99% of the time?

3. Good ideas leading nowhere such as the character/family screen : the player has no influence on choosing spouses or children's education (which could lead to traits or whatever) so what's the point?

4. Tedious game mechanics which I know will become annoying after a while such as :

- no auto assigning of province consuls
- no auto creation of trade routes

Overall this game has some nice ideas such as religion and colonizing but honestly, it's feels like a pre-alpha rather than a demo.

- You can change message settings under options and pick which ones you want to pause the game.
- You can access all characters from the ledger
- pause works with the break/pause key on the keyboard

One minor tidbit, one of the characters had a trait that enabled him to use "envelope" in combat, I'm guessing that should be envelop! :)

Hmm, one could also mention that some of the event text needs a bit reconstruction. It's not like they are written incorrectly, but more like the style of narration is unintentionally hilarious. Or maybe very very cluncky would be better term?

The text on the "Character meets an old friend" event really got me laughing. Ah, it is almost as if it was written by me. :p

Not exactly, some were written to be a bit amusing. You also had the task of making the text make sense on all conditions that the event could fire, and also to the effect the event gave. This restriction made the texts seem a bit clunky at times.

That is true. However, when I looked that map at the start I wished that Paradox should have included the entire Arabian peninsula, Bactria and Indus valley as well. IMO, those areas in Europa Barbarum make it very exceptional as a mod. I hope that EU: Rome´s map allow that kind of modifications.

I am thinking about the martial, charismatic and finesse values of Hannibal. Hannibal´s martial value 8 which is good, his charm is 6 which IMO, is a bit to low(I would to his charm to 7.) and his finesse is 8 which is IMO, a bit too high(I would put his finesse to 7 as well).

While I do not have any major complaints about the demo, or game.
I accually liked it, there are some things I'd like to see made easier to access so to speak.

First of all, I miss the fact that I can't right click get the diplomatic option there, but that's fine I can live with that.

However I'd like to see an interface for placing governers, half of the time I found myself spend looking for the perticular province where a governer had died. Perhaps some similiar to in EU 3 with the builds?

I have just played the demo several times as Rome and Carthage and must admit that it plays really well. However I do think that the battles should be a little more decisive, because you will now have to chase small retreating armies for years. Furthermore the lack of garrison that the occupier has does ensure that invading a country is really hard as the defender can easily recapture it. Thus the war between Carthage and Rome takes years and years (most times ending in a status quo) with neither side being decisive in the end.

There should be an alert that tells you you have provinces without governors, the tooltip should tell you which one.
