I see so many inspiring, efficient, crazy, spaghetti, disfunctional and functional junctions come by in these forums, and I love looking at them and gettting ideas from them. Unfortunately this involves digging through the forums for hours on end, so I thought we could use a nice topic for gathering the plurality of junctions for me and others to be inspired by.

To kick off, here's my latest creation. Not sure how it will work under stress yet ( I did some testing by rerouting all traffic over it, and it works fine so far), but at least I managed to create something that has no stops or trafficlights in it;

Oh I've put those in as guidlines for beautification, I will line the insides with bushes, and then fill inside that with trees, then remove the pathways again. But I wanted to post the junction before it gets partially obscured by trees :)

Ah cool, that makes sense. I'll have to keep that technique in mind.

I think it would look a bit "cleaner" without them :D
and the cars would still be able to reach everything

or is it just to prevent jams?

I'm trying to make most junctions as compact as possible and as functional as I can make them without them looking too ugly.
The results vary.

My first biggish off-ramp in my first city got a bit weird...

3ADD1115E82143386008DE20EDE7B1503BA09374

That was my first attempt to make an efficient on/off ramp for the highway. It worked pretty well, but often got clogged because of the lights when ramps meet 6-lane.

E45FAB500D466F73BD20577F7AAE14CF2A142595

That evolved into elevated roundabout:

16B32A85E469D473920F51A232E85524BE1ADE2E

That is what I'm usually using, it's compact enough (I'm always putting at least some distance between highway and buildings and spam trees there), works quite well unless there's a heavily congested regular intersection nearby.

If there is, then I try to use something like this:

38545D44CD969C319D73B06768CF3B2EE13517CF

or this:
E63E894C6F87C8B61C8B73F3203A4F01CA74C96A

As for the cities, when an intersection gets too busy and there are no other intersections that would stop traffic flow in immediate proximity, I slap a fancy roundabout in place:

Seems like it would help jam up the roundabouts quite a lot less. Someone coming from the bottom left road that wants to turn left would have a more straight forward path than having to go through both roundabouts.

Yes it would be cleaner, and yes, the traffic would still reach everything. All of them are actually used by traffic though, because its shorter then just using the diamond part of the intersection and crossing the central bridge before or after it. The extra ramps also double to triple the capacity of the junction, as far as it come to reaching the point where traffic would start to back up. So yeah, it shortens trips a bit, but mainly it adds capacity to prevent jams. And I think it looks cool :D

Keep in mind, when necesity for reaching everything was the only consideration, a level crossing would always be the best solution, but knowing the game mechanics and how busy it can get, capacity (preventing jams) is very important too. On the pre-release game streams I saw someone create horrible spaghetti junctions, but thanks to the extra length of all that spaghetti, it really helped jams, and that's something that stayed with me after seeing those streams.

I think your use of ramps are justified. Otherwise all traffic would have to use both roundabouts regardless of where they are going, and we all know that ain't real roundabouts, so it would cause a lot of jam.

My first attempt at a compact intersection in the asset editor. I somehow ended up with an interchange that allows U-turns in for one highway but not the other... maybe it will have a niche use for someone one-day.

Have you tried to extend the ramps a bit? I realize it takes up a little bit more space, but it's looks more realistic I think. Looks like you got space for it too, if you are willing.

Here's an example of something simple I use all the time where traffic isn't too heavy:

359zg61.jpg

The longer ramps can handle more build up of waiting cars as well.

my little highway roundabout/Interchange-thingie :D

Groundlevel: Intake from northern main highway and there you can enter the districts
Second level: exits from the districts and exit to main highway
Third level: a shortcut to go from north to south and the other way round

The ground level has also an exit to main highway and there is a connection between the second and groundlevel, so that cims who leave a district can enter another district :3

Love it <3

@JimmiG Well, that last pic might look messy, but it looks like it actually works too. It may not always be pretty, but creating extra bypasses for predominant traffic often helps alleviating traffic problems tremendously :)

@roger292 Wow, that multilevel roundabout looks very creative! It looks like it should have a tourist attraction factor :D

@ByLeven Really like that first junction, especially how interwoven it looks. I like your fork too, and how the teeth add extra capacity

Very inspiring stuff!

@Maarten your stuff looks beautiful, next to functional of course, your stuff is very inspirational, but at times almost too much for me to achieve...lol. I suspect you have a loooong history in citybuilders?

@ Eddek very compact indeed, downside is once there is a trafficjam, it near to immediately expands to te main routes connected to it. I love your use of walkways though, and actually I think walkways are under appreciated when it comes to alleviating traffic problems. I had an area in a previous city where I used walkways extensively, and it was amazing to see how many people wre ending up prefering walking over driving. Some walkways were used by masses of people...
