yea, recently I have tended to go with a more mercantalistic/aristocratic approach regarding sliders.

This is partly due to the fact that, in most games, I tend to blast through the BB limit at some point, making it somewhat difficult/unprofitable to keep merchants in foreign Centres of Trade.
In my experience, at a certain point trade becomes 'meh' (seems to me it's even more prevalent in HTTT than it was in IN), so the extra merchant and 5% extra trade effieciency from ahving full plutocracy becomes meaningless.

on the other side, aristocracy becomes increasingly more useful as your empire grows (and consequently your military), in my opinion. For building that well-oiled killing machine aristocracy certainly helps.

Really? In my current Morocco game, I would be dead without trade. Full Free Trade is like heaven on earth. XD

well, dont get me wrong: in the beginning of a game, or if you're a small/medium-sized nation, trade is definitely worth it, and yea, you would be worse off with no trade whatsoever.

However, when you get to a certain size/tech level, taxes/production starts to be far better and profitable, and compared to the amount of money you'll be investing in your military, the reduced military costs of aristocracy will probably end up saving you more money than if you were to go full plutocracy (but most importantly, aristocracy has the juicy boni +1 shock bonus and +3 yearly diplomats, which are handy for those war-intense periods). This of course depends on your Infamy-levels: at higher infamy, foreign compete chance gets significantly lowered, and the costs of continually having to resend merchants might prove to be quite expensive.

Regarding mercantilism vs. free trade: well, because infamy affects compete chance in foreign CoTs, I personally prefer mercantilism due to the domestic compete chance being unaffected by infamy. The added boni of more spy defence+1.0 extra yearly spy are just an added bonus

If you dont have any domestic CoTs (if you're a small nation, for instance), I'd certainly go with free trade, however.

I've never seen any reason to go Plutocratic unless you're Free Trade and don't want to spend a NI on getting spies. The Trade Efficiency bonus only gets you more income than you save in cavalry costs if you're a very small nation. The shock and diplomat bonuses are great, and "Merchant Chance" is worthless (it should really be changed to Compete Chance...).

my byzantine empire as 1520 draw to a close:

eu3mapbyz15209171.png

yes thats Poland bordering me in Croatia, i've currently got a mission to take it, but am awaiting for a new defender of the faith for the Catholics, since every DoW against a catholic country is a gamble for me, to see if France continues or decides to fullfill their duties.

Also Golden horde does not controll Iran, its just that the map got confusing after Golden Horde obtained a border with Persia (borders somewhere between Armenia and thingy Koyunlu)

and yes you saw correctly i am in controll of Judea and Rome...

hell France despite being defender of the faith supported me in my casus belli lacking war to take rome.

Poland is currently HRE, and despite the Reformation still being in full swing managed to get 3 reforms passed in around 3 years.

they got a lot of protestant countries to convert back, and fought a defensive war for a member (the attacker being me)

My goals in Asia are reached and i'm on the defensive there, though the only power willing to challenge me is Golden Horde (and they're dangerous)

I posted here a while back and not much has changed form me but when I discovered Europe a decade or so back it was a...confusing sight.

Here is the world in 1562.

EU3_MAP_MAJ_1562518_1.jpg

That's Ireland, Scandinavia, Papal State, Scotland, Northumberland and Great Britain in the Brittish Isles.

Mur...om(?) formed Russia with Muscowy still around.

Funny looking Austria who is 2 reforms away from becoming the HRE. That is just WAY TOO EASY.

France is gobbled down mostly by Burgundy and England but Aragon took the coast. And little Brittany is still hanging there.

There's a colonizing catholic Kingdom of Grananda and the Sultanate of Epirus is dominating Greece.

Then there's a supersized Dulkadir and a huge Baluchistan.

Then there's me.

EU3_MAP_MAJ_1562518_2.jpg

I lost my COT in Bali-Lombok and that sucks. For some reason I'm not seeing the Westernize decisions, could someone help me with that?
I'm in the same tech-group as Ming for example so how do I change to the Indian tech group?
I did it in IN iirc.

Munster, 1485:
munstermap.jpg

I no longer own any provinces in the Old World. Had Munster and Connacht until a few years ago, when a 4/8/0 irish nat stack popped up in Meath. I didn't mind much, had already moved my capital to Epikwetk (or however you spell it) and the two provinces in Eire were my worst-performing.

Kanem Bornu blobbing in west africa? I think... i just know it's not portugal

That's Syria holding most of the Middle East. Timurids are toast

Murom was only (smolensk/chernigov) away from forming russia and then collapsed.

Currently the game is bugging out - I couldnt leave the Genoese trade league; they're now located solely in Azow, hopefully save/reload fixes this

I was surprised I was able to get QftNW with Munster in 1425 (six 5-merchant CoTs, full trade research)... a bit broken. my first game in 4.1a.

If you can't spell your own capital's name, maybe you should rename it.

Why are you colonizing Canada?Furs may be expensive tradegoods, but 1 base tax is crap. Please, don't say anything about colonial range.as minor, you can easily research naval and navigators are usually idle during the game..

You Westernise to the Muslim Tech Group skipping Indian altogether. In IN you needed a Latin (Western) neighbour. Now I believe you only need a neighbour in the Muslim group. I'd imagine Baluchistan would satisfy this if you could border them. Otherwise the best way is to grab an African province and border a coloniser there.

Completed Goals: Completely wipe out France and England.

Current Goals: Completely wipe out Castille and dismantle the HRE.

Major Superpowers: Castille, Persia, Austria, Russia, Ming.

Cool things of note: Guyenne is getting pretty powerful (southern present day France). Persia + Russia formations result in giant superpowers. India is united by Vigayanagar. Ming remains strong and has extended since the beginning. Scotland is set to inherit Sweeden. Mazovia (pink nation) is looking to challenge Russia which is cool for an OPM at the start.

Kept getting the "Discover xxx!" missions, which are easy and give you 5 colonists a pop... i started in canada as soon as i could reach beothuk/labrador so i could get a core on mainland NA asap and move capital - i wanted to be based in NA before I got gobbled by england, which never happened. I'm moving down to the carribbean now.

As for the northern canadian coast, that's just to block castille/whoever from colonizing and then dowing me.

Someone who bothered to do all that with Munster is clear just playing for fun, so why question any of their decisions?

Why did I take a bunch of worthless provinces I will need hundreds of years to get a return out of in my current game when their are rich ones in Europe all over the place...because I got a mission and I am role playing.

Anyway just struck me as a very silly and odd question.

Guess this doesn't count as I've used modded savegames to allow for wild annexations, but I suppose this screenshot shows exactly what NOT to do in this game. Fighting rebels that come in all flavours from the Americas to random Asian archipelagoes, infamy that bobs up and down every year, troops away fighting in the colonies leaving a homeland ripe for rape by mighty France-you name it,our gloriously overstretched empire of Portugal/Spain has it.

GBR, 1586.

I'm about to get annhilated by Austria :( We were allies, but in the past 9 months they've broken the alliance, cancelled military access, and sent about 3 insults (i've been gifting them to buy time). Since they broke the alliance, I've raised another 75k troops, and currently have 135k in france (1:2 cav:inf).

The problem is that they're the emperor, which means that they have 354k troops...and 208k manpower (double mine; and mine is at half because of recent recruiting).

Just to make things even better, they're land tech 22 and i'm 19. I just looked it up, and that gives them .5 extra morale, in addition to the other modifiers. I honestly don't see how I can win this!

you'll win through strategic depth, if you've got IN or HTTT you can just station 1 regiment in every border province in france, maybe even add some depth to your line. withdraw the rest of your troops to Britain. when Austria declares war, pause the game and begin using all those predeployed regiments to scorch France. their armies should get annihilated by attrition and once they're down to a more manageble size you redeploy to France and crush them
