I actually really like Genoa. The Ideas suck, but the missions are awesome for making a snake empire
Ethiopeia is probably my favorite "haha" country.
Their ideas are a solid tier 2 or 3. Their traditions are solid for chain wars. They also get the strongest army in the game, but only for 10 years.
For anyone confused:
Now if only coptic had real mechanics I'd consider them to be a good tier 2 choice. As it exists right now though there's basically no reason to not convert to Sunni. I think Paradox should at the LEAST just give Coptic the orthodox patriarch mechanic and call it a day even if a bit ahistorical.

- -25% military technology cost
- +5% discipline
- +25% global manpower modifier

Venice, Venice -> Byzantium, Genoa -> something.
I try these starts at least once each for every patch, so they're something like 3/4 of my games:
With Venice I mostly try to grow tall, limiting my lands to estuaries and cot, keeping good relations with stable allies and a couple of subject marches.
When reforming Byzantium a take the chance to try the "game of thrones" and to restore the imperial borders.
With Genoa I fool around with different targets.
I try these starts at least once each for every patch, so they're something like 3/4 of my games:

Do you have strategy for this one posted anywhere? This is one I want to take a stab at soon.
As for the topic, I don't really have favorites per se, but there are countries that I tend to try out each time and some games I've enjoyed immensely. Cuzco--->Inca--->Sun God was a blast, as was Poland-->all their achievements, but both are basically one and done. I tend to play Austria, Ottos and Byz with each major iteration of the game though.
My favorite is Naples. I don't know why. Maybe because it is in the middle of everything?
