This is my Genoan trade network that I think is fairly realistic as something they might have done if they could have wrested control of the Med from Venice.

Every island in the Mediterranean sea (other than Venice itself) and every Greek peninsula belongs to me, Spain and Austria are allies.

I took Humanism first to reduce the risk of revolts on my islands, and got a number of +1 BT events in greek lands which was super nice.

Also this is the game where I have probably been given the most provinces by my allies in any game I've played. Malta, Cueno, Eprus, Sienna, Suez, Sinai, and that other one next to it, were all given to me by my allies. I'm currently colonizing a bit in S. America, just because I am planning on expanding into India and you need QFTNW for the good missions and decisions for conquering them.

Also I'm making rather a lot of money.

Remember my not-so-impressive Mughal Empire earlier? Well...I've improved a bit.

IcLefJ.png

Lost a few provinces shortly after westernizing due to the Ottomans and Nogai teaming up on me, but besides that I've been steamrolling over India--Vajanyagar is still going strong, (Portugal nabbing a colony let THEM westernize before me!) but they've left me alone for the most part. Thinking of taking a chunk out of them for the endgame, just 'cause.

Oh, and I have colonies!

bLEDgE.png

VoYs8Z.png

Brunei was tougher than I thought--somehow they scrounged up an impressive navy and wrecked a major trade fleet of mine. Had to peace out only grabbing one province.

[
pdYSPLjWp

[Have a nice strip of East Africa and Madagascar too, but no screenies yet...]

Yup, all the Phillipines are mine--before ANY European powers could even nab ONE colony there. Portugal and Moscovy(?) have nabbed a few islands further south, but their trade power is tenuous at best...Malacca even Westernized, and has been giving Portugal a bloody nose on-and-off for years. It's kinda funny, really.

Oh, and another surprise:

idmBIQyzp

Commonwealth formed rather early this game (around 1500s, IIRC) and has held strong the entire time--later they even snatched up a chunk of the Ottoman's turf! Also, Muscovy just can't seem to form Russia: Ryzan is a OPM, and a vassal of Crimea...yet they've never annexed them. And Muscovy has gotten BIG...as big as Russia normally is, really.

And I don't have a screenshot of it--yet--but the Ottomans have fallen apart around 1730. Rebellions everywhere; Iraq and Syria broke off; AND invaded by the Commonwealth, Hungary, and Sweden--all in quick sucession. (That invasion and Iraq/Syria suceeding were even simultainious!) In fact, the Ottomans have NEVER taken Constantinople! Not once...VENICE has held onto it almost since the beginning, though.

My Jianzhou > Manchurian Empire. It isn't that big, but I don't want to conquer whole continents anyway.

Q4X54Ce.jpg

Forming Manchuria went all well, Ming was my most loyal ally throughout the whole time and taking Korea, Oirat and parts of Japan where easy as well. Also, Japan lost a war against Ainu and Persia formed perfectly after 10 years or so. Russia was very slow, they defeated Nowgorod around 1600 and colonised poorly. So I could easily take big parts of Siberia to look scarier.
The problem was taking some Provinces from Ming to form Qing. They had almost no Rebellions exept for a twenty Years civil war early in the game. They hardly participated in any wars neither. But at this state, i was ready to face them. The problem: They were allied with Castille. And as a twenty-stack arrived, I had no chance. For some reason, I only had tech 1 units aviable. They haven't had a chance against western forces. This is a bug, isn't it? It makes further progress fairly difficult.

But all in all, it was a fun game. Probably way more interesting than in pre-1.8.

Just a modest Oman->Arabia with a couple of client states. Also have a Bedouin Brazil colonial nation and own the entire Cape. Started out pretty good and Westernized around 1550ish or so but it was a nasty one with lots of rebels despite my having been at peace for a good 10-12 years while saving up MP, it caught me quite by surprise after the ho-hum westernization I did in my previous game as Malacca. It wasn't so much that the rebel groups were large, it was that they were scattered and the very first event I got sapped all my tradition and I got smacked back to Baghdad twice by the main rebel force before defeating it, despite being considerably larger with even pip generals and no crossings. :\ The rest of the rebels spawned in the cape and in Brazil so there was no hope of cleaning them up, a total of 10 rebel groups had spawned, 5 of them in the cape making a doomstack of 48. Thankfully the only thing I took was a prestige hit for accepting demands from them after completion. I got decent to good rulers for the first 150 years and then after that they were all garbage and I couldn't seem to get them killed.

It was also a bit tricky breaking up the Ottoman+Timurid alliance. I had cut the Ottomans off from the Mamluks around Gaza & Jerusalem and after consolidating nearly everything of worth from there up to a small bit of eastern Anatalioa/Caucuses where tiny Armenia, Georgia, Aq Qoyunlu, etc were left. I was allied to both Ottomans and Timurids to protect myself from both of them. Eventually Timurids allied a tiny OPM in the sandwich in an attempt to diplovassalize and I was able to get the Otto+Timmy alliance to break and eat the better parts of Persia and the aftermath causing them to split into Afghanistan/Khiva/Tabarestan.

After all that, I got screwed over a few times by my Russian and French allies. At one point I was in 4 wars because they kept calling me in. They always seem to have perfect timing too, I was moving my troops into position for an invasion of Ethiopa to maintain my 60+ PP when I got the first call. I held off the DOW thankfully, but the calls just kept coming and by the time I was able to help wrap it all up it wasn't worth attacking Ethiopa anymore because I had better targets to go after from truce expirations in India to consolidate my trade routes. In 3 out of 4 of my games where I haven't been directly involved with Russia's growth, they have turned out quite weak. Colonizing no longer gives them the extra boost they need to take a bite or two out of PLC for Smolensk and Bryansk and such after they've tamed the hordes.

My Byzantine Empire, from Illyria to Persia the Basileus reigns supreme.
05D5D2444C575474CD431E7647CE4641A4AB2BE9

Started off a little slow and spent 37 years driving the Ottomans off Europe in the first war, thank you Greek patriots and Bulgarian nationalists and spent the rest of the century defending against Venice and then finally westernizing by 1502. After that my wars were usually of minor difficulty but the Commonwealth and Russia were banes of my life as they both rivaled me and joined coalitions against me.

Interesting things of note:
New Zealand and Hawaii are controlled by Scotland.
Dutch La Plata, Danish USA based in Connecticut and colonized Madagascar,Norwegian Canada, and Spanish Haiti in Cuba all successfully rebelled.
Milan is the only Reformed nation is existence but controls most of Northern Italy including Rome and is allied to France.
Scandinavia only formed six months before game end.
Japan turned Catholic and is the only major East Asian power not westernized, Ming and Qing are.

Bengal not into Hindustan

I wanted NOT to create Hindustan so I never pulled the trigger on the mission. I simply do not like green colours for my nations, although I have played plenty of 'green' countries in the past. (and yes, the picture below is in green but it was meant to show my sphere of influence).

I managed to westernize in 1501 and of course since I was the only western nation, it took forever to be able to create vassals rather than protectorates, had to wait for others to finally westernize themselves.

Coring everything at 100% is costly and I am desperately behind on adm and dip tech. At least now I have Dali to feed with some newly acquired land.

Beat up coalitions many times (just now finished pretty much all of Asia).

Spain and Great Britain declared war several times, each time I took some colonies from them in my neighbourhood and got lovely 10% war reparations. They must have been shocked to come up on an army double their size with same mil tech as themselves :) Of course my paddleboats do not compare to their ships so naval warfare is out of the question (20 of their light ships beat 26 of my 'heavy' paddleboats).

They occasionally attack my vassal Baluchistan to get a hold of land in the area but wars drag on for 10 years and they finally give up.

Bit bored now but I think I might focus on cleaning up the area while annexing my vassals to see if I can make the picture look better than this.

I cannot create vassals, they will all be protectorates :(
What he meant is that the usual strategy is to get vassals(preferably small ones with lots of cores to give back but not as needed after 1.8) before you westernize and then use your superiority to feed them.

AH ok, sorry, misread that. I did do that, had Orissa, Carnatic and created Bagelkhand as vassals before I westernized (alongside Arakan and Baluchistan), had to integrate some of them at some point, they were weak militarily so not of much use except cannonfodder. And it took me only 35 years to integrate Orissa and another 28 years for Bagelkhand.

I posted from my phone earlier.

Even if your vassals are junk, if you're fighting other junk and have AoW you can just transfer occupation (westernization is less attractive if you can't, but still useful). Even after that, western nations can turn hordes and Muslim tech into vassals so between vassals you already have and hordes/muslim tech vassal feeding shouldn't be too far away.
