My Shia Caliphate, started as Fatimids in Syria in 867, achieved independence from Abbasids via faction, subjugated Muslim minors in Levant, opportunistically grabbed Edessa from ERE revolt and slowly pushed into Iraq, grabbed Baghdad and established Caliphate. Here you can see it seconds before Seljuk victory in their invasion of Mesopotamia:
ezmD8Je.jpg

And here seconds after:
bWmlfkF.jpg

What to do now? I'm no longer strong enough to go against Egypt, ERE or Sunni Caliphate, so I can't even clean up borders in Levant, and I don't want to go for Armenia, because they were awesome, they have been conquered by Saffarids and then fought their independence back. Any ideas? Also on the second screenshot, in the mini-map area, you can see mistype "Redsea"
Conquering Daylam probably won't make much sense as the Seljuks will probably invade it too soon.
Then.... wait for the revolts, perhaps help to spread some in the sunni Caliphate

I'm role-playing Shia Imamate, hide, survive, recover, and start over. "Every day is Ashura / And every land is Karbala", so rage-quitting isn't an option.
Maybe become a vassal of the Seljuks then, and expand into new areas while under their protection?

No can do, I'm at the same tier as Seljuk sultan. But it's not that bad, I still have Jerusalem and Damascus, the former being most technologically advanced county in the world, and Tulunids are way more decadent then I am, so with any luck, mercs, and suitable ruler I can invade Egypt, or just conquer it step by step.

A little follow-up on my Shia Caliphate play-through. Unexpected death of carefully bred attractive genius Caliph in the ripe age of 23 broke succession of genius Shia caliphs. I've managed to clean up borders in Levant only to have external inheritance mess it all up again. Seljuks invaded Arabia, creating a state that goes from southern edge of the map right till the northern. I've managed to invade Egypt, which made my borders more Fatimid-like then ever, and also netted over 90% decadence, though that bound to go down once I distribute newly conquered land among the family. Overall this one of the most interesting games of CK2 I've ever had.

Wasn't there supposed to be some kind of measure to stop the seljuks taking over the steppes? In every one of my games they've either gone for the steppes or both the steppes AND Persia

I'm pretty sure the thing that was done was to move their invasion site further south to make sure that they went for Persia. Previous to this they hardly went for Persia at all. Nothing have been done to actively discourage them from taking the steppes as far as i know.

A lot of the time persia's quite fractured so they might use their starting position to take just one emirate then spend the rest of their time going after the steppes, and since by then cumania is usually quite large, it doesn't take long..It's probably one of the most glaring issues. That, and the byzantine empire constantly converting to catholic.

Byzantines are in North Italy, and their current heir is Catholic.
As for Seljuks they initially went for Khiva, then conquered steppes all the way till the map edge, then turned for Persia, then Mesopotamia and Arabia.

Both of these issues are due to how the base game works. You will have the same issue no matter if you play HIP or vanilla.

Not sure I've ever seen the byzantines convert in vanilla, but then I've only had two games recently. And in those games the seljuks seemed largely uninterested in the steppes. Maybe the extended map affects it it somehow or maybe I'm just lucky

Concerning the "starting in persia" thing, I started a game yesterday and saw saw the seljuks arrive at samarkand. Doesn't sound like persia to me.

I didn't say they start in Persia, i said their invasion point was moved south. It used to be on the northern side of Lake Aral.

The Historical homeland of the Seljuqs and the starting point of their migration was on the eastern side of Lake Aral in what was known as Khwarezm. They then went south of Lake Aral and attacked the Western territories of the Ghaznavids, taking Merv and Nishapur in 1037 and scoring a decisive win against the Ghaznavid ruler in 1040, forcing him to give up all of his Western territories and allowing the Seljuqs to press further West from their new power base.

Tell me how a starting point in Samarqand is not quite accurate for this chain of events?

I didn't say it wasn't accurate. It just seems to me to be a choice between historical starting position or historical behaviour.

I just hate seeing tengrism get screwed so often :(
