The Chronicles of Frussia, Part II

frussia2_zps0aea3dcb.png

Russia formed in 1417. Nothing terribly exciting compared to what some people have achieved on this forum, but how many of them also have a PU with France? =)

Anyway the missions were just a typical RYA > TVE > YAR > Vassal NOV > Annex NOV (cancelled) > Save Smolensk > Annex NOV Russia formation. But I delayed forming Russia a bit because I misread "Tver OR Yaroslavl" as "Tver AND Yaroslavl".

Perhaps it was for the best, as the truce-breaking strategy would have totally wrecked France with the -5 stab, and we don't want that because the froggies are our friends this time. The PU with France opens up a whole lot more opportunities and concerns one wouldn't normally be bothered about in a regular Russia game.

France stopped insulting me once I vassalised Novgorod and had the forcelimit to build a bigger army than them. Interestingly France still has its vassals, and tries to annex them during peacetime, but isn't allied with them since they can only be allied with me. If I ever inherit them all hell will break loose over there when the vassals find themselves master-less. Also, going around converting people to Orthodox is a great way of causing their entire country to collapse into disaster (see Aragon, for instance), except for Lithuania which became more stable =).

My other allies are Brandenburg (I love it when the computer wants to ally with me), Finland (broke from NOV in Neva), and Sardinia (released from ARA). Vassals are Tver (for now) and Naples (did the Naples+ Epirus vassalisation strategy from the "tips and tricks" thread!). Plans for the future are reclaiming cores from PLT and TEU, and TVE, then giving the Tatar Yoke a kicking while I wait for infamy to burn off. My only concerns at this point are other states using warnings/guarantees to mess with me while I set out to reclaim cores, and possibly a DoW from Kalmar Union and friends with no CB. France will be fine as long as I don't inherit them till I'm ready!

Lastly, Austria is HRE and looks to stay that way for a long time. I smell a final boss battle!

Pope is making historical conquest. Yay! And congrats for forming Russia so quickly. You could done it faster, but 1417 is very good score(had a game when i formed it in 1433, but it was in MP, and i had few disconnects/regency, and all things trying to prevent me from forming russia). Try to take Kola, so your country looks nicer. If you would took finmark from norway it would be not bad(very important province, strategicaly wise - allows you to easily go south to norway, without needing to siege this province - and if you got kola russian culture, it is likely to swap culture). As for france, you just keep calm, and just keep france in union as long as possible, until they annex their vassals. Then just try to inherit. You could help them, by sponsoring some patriots in brittany, so they regain their cores. You can also use them, to gain some vassals, in that area. In the end, if you manage to keep them in PU, and inherit later on, you will need to somehow connect your lands, and making vassals around HRE could help it(also converting ppl to orthodox is allways good thing - allways a chance to conquer them later without need of conversion, and it allways destabilize their countries)

UKRAINE in GERMANY????????

It does look odd. Although, given that this save was converted from CK2, it is still quite possible that the Ukrainian dynasty could have inherited some minor province in Germany, and then have been conquered in their homeland, keeping their German territory.

The Chronicles of Frussia, Part III : Steak Tartare with White Sauce

frussia3.png

Final boss defeated and the evil horde given a right good kicking. Now renounce your heathen/heretic faith and pay obeisance to the Russian Patriarchate!

Enemy rulers have a habit of dying when I'm at war with them. When I attacked Ukraine, Golden Horde's vassal, they shortly after had a TSC and now have 0 soldiers - it seems that Ming is occupying all of it which I can't see. I thought the Austrians were getting uppity when they fought a war against Poland, Bavaria, and Bohemia, and won! So I attacked them (with one of the stupidest CBs too!) after they had disbanded their swollen armies and thought they could rest and recuperate their WE. The Austrian Emperor died shortly after - leapt from a tall building in shame, most likely.

Looking after my pet frog isn't as easy as it might seem. I had a bit of a rough time earlier - got into a war with England, who was Catholic DotF, and then Brittany decided to DoW France and call in Burgundy because they thought I was weak. Well, they were probably right. What they weren't counting on was me sneaking across Europe to the Breton homeland like a ninja and sieging them into accepting white peace. Dealing with England after that was easy - siege all continental provinces and stabhit them, then make them accept Orthodoxy =). They were wiped out shortly after, by a rebel Cornwall no less.

However, one country I could not beat was Castille. The horrible attrition from their inland provinces, as well as my godawful troops, meant that I could not defeat their 25k stack on their home ground - especially since France refused to step into Castillian territory for whatever reason. I gathered my forces, quick-sieged my way to 40% war score, and they accepted conversion even though they still had most of their troops. So Castille is now happily Orthodox, converting Iberia with their narrowminded missionaries and squashing rebels with the troops they had instead of breaking. I can't wait to see what happens when they start colonising.

The problems I'm facing right now are having the worst tech in Europe - although that's partly because I only research Government to make a rush for Noble Republic. Once I've got it, I'll be ready to inherit France, immediately release as a vassal, then change governments and westernise. Far from hating the PU, those froggies are just leaping to add themselves to our glorious Russian borscht, after we've shown our dedication marching all the way across Europe to help them squash rebels and other enemies. In contrast I'm starting to not really need their assistance any more, especially after taking on the HRE and friends by myself without their help. I still love them to bits though.

A couple more slider shifts and I'll be ready for Westernisation. However, I miss having a good Quality slider because my armies are really bad, taking horrible losses even when on the defence and having a good general. Sure, I don't run out of manpower, but that's not the problem if you don't have money to build more troops or any way to get them across Europe quickly, and the "faster reinforce" really isn't much good at all if your soldiers are dropping like flies anyway.

My goal in this game is now to foster three giant blobs, grown to at least their real-life borders. A Papal Controller vassal France, a HRE Brandenburg who's also my good ally, and of course glorious Mother Russia. Morocco seems to be blobbing well too - they took Algiers, Flanders, and Romagna. It's probably because Castille doesn't become DotF and get free Holy Wars against them (how about Orthodox DotF!).

Now Bohemia is emperor. Oh, they just got into a war with Brandenburg. Time to bring those heretics a little closer to God.

frussia4.png

Religious map - because I couldn't be bothered to list all the countries I converted. Also, London converted too but got seized by Catholic zealots. The only ones who took it well without breaking (other than OPM-3PMs) were Castille and Lithuania. Soon there will be more joining them.

Allies are Brandenburg and Finland (and Tirol). Vassals are Naples, Polotsk, and Teutonic Order. Next mission ... "Vassalise Finland" =)

Where can I find this thread?

It's the "Things I didn't know about" thread from a few pages back. One more thing I can add to that - declaring war on a Horde's vassal, if you pay tribute to the Horde, will result in immediate war with them without a stabhit. Problem is, you keep paying tribute even though you're at war with the horde, and will remain so until you declare war on them the usual route, or you wipe them out completely. Also, if you call any of your Allies (not vassals or PU partners) to war with the Horde's vassal, the Horde immediately peaces out, which can help if you just want to attack the vassal.

(EDIT : BTW, the Naples+Epirus vassalisation trick is merely that after Naples annexes Epirus, it still costs only 98% warscore to vassalise them. Therefore if you ever get into a war with Naples e.g. French Reconquest of Provence, occupy them and vassalise them to get a helpful ally early on - they like to build lots of ships, but they might lose Epirus to Greek rebels. They also have cores on Sicily so you can help them expand if you wish.)

Bohemia just declared war on me :/

They have 18 land tech and I have 11 + they have double the amount of troops I do, which is gonna make this realllllly hard to win.

Anyone got any tips on how I can not get brutally molested by big bad Bohemia?

1. If you can storm forts, then get access through Austria and hit their capital.

2. Pray that Orthodoxy is actually the correct faith and wait for a miracle. :p

I actually got forceconverted earlier in the game when everyone ganged up on me and I had to agree to it to avoid ceding tons of land and because I was essentially bankrupt :(

And maybe I could exploit the Bosphorus? Lure a few troops over, then block and kill those troops, rince repeat?

I am literally sat here dreading to unpause the game :/

That could absolutely work. Down side is, you're essentially giving up half your empire (and the corresponding income) which could prove problematic. If you do that, remember to scorch the earth before you leave so that they take massive attrition. It might ever wear them down to the point that attacking is a serious option. I would burn one province before they siege it, then when they do start to siege have your army in one of the adjacent territories so that they cannot assault and hope attrition wears them down before you get to your final line of defense (the Bosphorus). Either way your economy is gonna take a hit, so be prepared.
