Cant add Yugoslavia, you need to own at least 50% of a nation's core to add its name to a union!
It's not uncommon for large AI nations with a naval component to implode after a long war when all their ships die. If rebels rise up in colonial territory, and the AI doesn't have any ships to transport troops in those territories, good night sweet prince.
Of course, the reverse could be that Castille lost a long war and had no army to stop rebels, but mainland Castille would also be a mess in that case.

My current Venetian game in 1575, DW vanilla, normal mode:
This is the second time I started as a small nation and I'm loving it. In a few years I'll have cores on the provinces necessary to form Italy. Austria used to be a huge threat; first they inherited Milan very early in the game, then they became the emperor of the HRE, then they crushed hungary, taking most of their land, and finally they took more land on the italian peninsula. At one point our borders were so awkward it would take 5 border crossings between us to walk from my holdings in southern italy to the rest of my territory in the balkan peninsula.
Some interesting autonomous AI developments: France imploded very early in the game. Everyone stole land from them, and even the ottomans had 4 provinces in former french territory. Morocco actually has a core there. Castille also imploded, leading to a powerful Aragon and fairly strong Granada. Granada and Provence are both colonizing, while burgundy just conquered the natives for new world land.

I suppose you could say that Venice is a small nation... but I would call it a medium-power despite it's size...

You also forget that Bar is still on the map. And it appears to have middling power.

You can not randomize Portugal! Even in real history no chance of any border changes. Those borders will remain until the end of humanity!
Perhaps the conquest mission on Milan and Inheritance of Hungary and Brunswick and vassalising Trier. That would be ~7 infamy. Certainly burnable with a good ruler in 12 years but mighty lucky.
yes that's true, but the fact that their territories are not contiguous like other similarly sized countries makes them feel smaller to me. By comparison I've only played long games as France, Burgundy, Spain, Vijayanagar and Munster. I also colonized as Munster, but the only wars the whole time were with the native american countries, so it was a bit too peaceful.
