Very sad to see how easy those North African nations are. They should be pretty hard to conquer, even in Victoria 2 they are still independent in the beginning.

I managed to get all of the provinces needed to make Italy, but didn't realize that you needed Administrative 10 to form it. Only reason I got as far as I did is becuase i lucked out and Austria got dragged down in a series of crippling wars; by the time we were finished with them the Emperor never interfered with my conquests again.

Also, do you guys think that all candidates for election will have two 1s and one 4 for stats? I really hope not as that defaults republics to mediocre leaders. Granted, reelections can grow the doge in strength, but with republican tradition ticking as slow as it does and the huge stability penalty I don't think its worth it in the long run

Had a great game as Venice earlier... I'll post screens in a bit.

But, as far as the Doge goes, does anyone else think they should ramp up the republican tradition loss over time? Perhaps, start it at 3%, then go to 7% then 10% for the Republican tradition loss percentage. After all, there is nothing wrong with being re-elected (like American Presidents, for example). The problem comes when you are able to hold on to power for too long and undermine democracy (such as with Prime Minister/President Putin in Russia). I realize these are both 20th and 21st century examples, but the same logic applies in my mind.

Why bother with the rich new world? Conquer dirt poor Africa instead! And hell they are poorer than dirt. At least dirt has mass.

Well, thought I'd start a temporary empire thread, until the full game releases. Let's see how much land people have managed to gain in the 23 year period we're given!

I'll start with my Ottoman Empire.

Tried my best to eat up the Mamluks, but since I stuck to the truces I was only able to take the levantine by the end. Integrated Crimea and went to annex Bosnia after taking the levantine but it triggered a coalition war against me
Had to settle for 2 of the Bosnian provinces and some of Georgia.

Am I the only one that didn't attack the Mamluks in an Ottoman game?
I just integrated Wallachia + Crimeea, conquered 3 provinces from the Georgians (went in for the Gold province), killed the tow Anatolian minors, conquered Erserum from Aq-Qoyunlu and then went against the Catholics:
Venice: got Dalmatia, Corfu, Naxos and Istria from them, Bosnia, Ragusa and Montenegro were annexed. I was preparing an invasion on Hungary when the game ended so I didn't think about taking a screenshot.

Also, cored and converted every province I owned for a nice 10-15 ducats profit every month(seems rather easy to make gold as the Ottomans, as I only had to take 1 single loan the whole game that I even paid off early ). The thing that made me wonder the most was the fact that Naval Maintenance was sooo, sooo low compared to EU3 and the Military Maintenance (20 + ducats for Military at 60 regiments - under the force limit and 5 ducats for 80 ships - 20 over the force limit).

When I was going for westernization and I wasn´t fighting, only making back-up cash, I have like 4k ducats in 1510, It seems to me money aren´t that useful when everything is paid for through ruler points. But you can buy advisors (if you have some good ones - I didn´t ) and I hope universities and other costly building would help you with your ruler points´ management.

I meant natives all the way in America forcing me, all the way in Europe, to change to animist and to become a noble republic. It makes no sense xD

Don't see why they removed the EUIII restriction where religious rebels would only flip your state religion if you were in the same religious group. So Ottos could get flipped to Shiite but not to Orthodox, for example.

I expect this will get patched back in pretty quickly. It's too easy to exploit otherwise.

Okay, the key is obviously taking nothing in the interior of Africa but the coast. Controlling the Ivory Coast line made me so extremely rich I could handle four colonies at full maintenance at the same time while still building more barques:

eu4_24_zps4899c89b.png

eu4_23_zps735a4627.png

Concentrating on what little colonies cost coring I could even expand to gov 10 and took the first economy idea before the game ended:

eu4_25_zps8f6e27ae.png

Could have worked out a bit better as I was delayed by a nearly successfull rebellion but got the weekend to try.

How'd you manage to get that much out of the Aq Qoyunlu? A claim war with extra unjustified demands added in? Good work.

2013-08-09_00001.jpg2013-08-09_00004.jpg

Make sure you set them as rivals, then it's just easy. I got 2 claim missions, as well.

Annexed Crimea, Wallachia. If I had another month, Tripoli would've been mine, as well. Mass conversions (3 Missionaries w/ Defender of the Faith & Jerusalem!) ensued.

Actually allying Astrakhan seems like the best thing for Ottos. Usually GH attacks them and you can force it to give back cores to Crimea making it even more yummi:

Do you get less Aggressive Expansion malus if you conquer your rivals? Or just more claims? The former would be phenomenal - the second just slightly less so.

-33.0% diplomatic power cost, so it costs 33% less warscore per province. If you have a claim on the province, they're 25% off. Add it all up and you are getting a lot of extra territory every war. I tended to notice that I got claims on my rivals (might be random, though), rather than northwest (European) nations, so I'm supposing that they're related. That, along with the annex Egypt mission, which I never fulfilled, allowed me to keep a constant CB on the Mamluks.

You'll likely get more Aggressive Expansion malus due to conquering more provinces, but it's not too hard to deal with when you are wielding over 100k troops. That's also why you ought to expand southeast as Ottomans, so that your relationship with your vassals doesn't go belly up from AE (seems to be too far for them to care much), allowing you to annex them in a timely fashion.
