What if Mussolini had been a staunch, militant Catholic, whose imperialist ambitions were only rivaled by the desire to fight the godlessness of the 20th century? Enter Lega Cattolica, a militant alliance of countries traditionally close to Catholicism. The major members in addition to Italy are France and Nationalist Spain (Franco-Franco alliance, heh) followed by Ireland, Portugal, Latin American countries as well as the Baltic outpost of grace: Poland!

Major enemies are going to be Germany, who still hold their foolish claim on Gdansk, and the wicked secessionists of Great Britain who seek to elevate their earthly empire to the realm of the divine, and of course the Socialist icon-breakers who move ever closer...

Something south American would be interesting too. Maybe a Confederacy of the Andes? Not much industry, but defensive terrain and distance from the majors should make it far from an easy match to take them down, especially with some buffer states in the north.

That requires changing the politics of France even more than those of Italy though...

Isn't about 80% of French population Roman Catholic? Then have a suitably reactionary leader charm the people like Hitler did, mix in some realpolitik concerns like unification against the godlessness of German fascism knocking at the gates - and presto.

Yeah, at the time 80% seems likely. But they were also (still are) extremely defensive of the 1905 separation of church and state. Going against it would have been (probably) possible after the fact, but a fascist movement based on that wouldn't have met much success I think.
Or maybe I'm deluded, considering that right no there are fascist groups that preach Christian defense against Muslim immigrants. And none of the fascist movement were big on religion anyway (other than the cult of the leader, of course).

You're right in that French people have, since the revolution, lived a dual existence as both largely Catholic and largely secular. But this isn't really about Catholicism as a religion, anyway - it's about an excuse to band together against those who've faulted us, right?
