Happy New Year Everyone!!!

This is my latest build so far.
OS: Windows 10 Pro
Motherboard: Asus ROG Strix B350-F Gaming
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 1800x 3600 Mhz 8 Cores, 16 Logical Cores
GPU: AMD Radeon (TM) R9 390 Series
PSU: Corsair 1000HX
RAM: Ballistix Elite 32GB, 4x8GB DDR4-2666

I have to say, after doing some tweaking here and there. Watch I subscribe to in the workshop. My rig can handle high population cities with some 80+ mods, some 1040+ assets subscribe to.

Hmmmm, both CPU and RAM are on the minimum side. At best your laptop can play the game plain vanilla. At higher population and/or with mods it will struggle.

What? Minimum? Are you sure you're quoting the right post?

The i7-8750H is the most powerful laptop CPU currently available. That 2.2Ghz is idle speed; the Turbo speed is 4.1Ghz.
I've got the exact same CPU, it easily runs 200.000 citizens with 119 mods. (The number of assets is irrelevant, that runs off the RAM.)

The GTX 1050 Ti is significantly above the recommended system specs. And this game doesn't require a powerful GPU. It'll handle the game just fine. The only thing it can't handle is 4K, but that isn't the question, and it definitely isn't part of the minimum requirements.

That 8GB RAM is about 8GB too low, though. If you want all DLC's and a bunch of assets, 16GB is minimum.

Can we not do the "I have higher specs so everything else is bad" snobbery, please? This isn't the place for bragging about your own specs.

Excuse but I do not recalling treating others' spec as inferior. Plus I base the my assumption of what information that was giving. Also, you are assuming that this individual knows about tweaking and overclocking. Then accusing me of being a snob?

Thought I would increase the Ram ?

Let's start with the basics and work our way up.

Temporarily launch the game with --noWorkshop and load game, if it won't load from missing workshop, then just start a new game.

report your results.

My computer specs (I think I'm good to run Cities: Skylines; now if I could only figure out what comes with the program!):

Processor: AMD FX(tm)-8320 Eight-Core Processor
Video Car: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti
RAM: 32 GB
Operating Syste: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional Edition Service Pack 1 (build 7601), 64-bit

That should get you well past the base 9-tiles of the game with ease.

Not sure what you mean by, "What comes with the program?"

All of them with ease.

Just make note of workshop, as they take more resources from your system. so 8GB RAM is a little short. Be very selective on workshop as they chew up RAM very, very fast.

Windows can allocate up to another 16GB of RAM through virtual memory (page file), for 24GB total. It may cause long load times as your page file is on the hard drive. It may crash if you exceed it, so try keep low workshop count to avoid errors. Especially, memory allocation errors, which happens when your virtual memory gets used up or exceeded amd will prevent the saved game from loading at all.

EDIT---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A side note on your CPU. Intel has changed it's specs now that CPUs throttle according to temperature.

You 2.2 is minimum base clock guarantee. It will run at that frequency no matter what. The turbo is 4.1GHz which is false, and only can do it on a single core process (which almost never happens.

The true Turbo mode is 3.9GHz at 6 core in full 100% usage.

Of course, this can only be achieved on the most high end system with optimal cooling solutions. An office system would overheat quick and throttle down quickly on heavy apps.

Remember, contrary to their name, laptops are not well suited for laps. They will pick up dust and lint easy and cause overheating, and lower computer performance.

Nobody said anything about tweaking and overclocking.

The Turbo speed is a basic out-of-the-box feature, you don't need to overclock it.
These CPU's are designed with an idle speed (the 2.2Ghz), and a socalled 'Turbo' speed (named by Intel, not me) that a single core hits when a task requires it, such as videogames.

Listed core speed is never the actual top speed.

My comment about specs snobbery was based on the fact you decided to post your top-tier specs in a topic for people to ask "Can my system run it", and you definitely didn't post it as a question. You were showing off. It's distasteful.

And your very next comment was telling someone that a set of today's new mid-range specs was "on the minimum side", when the minimum specs for this game are a 10 year old medium PC with an Intel Core 2 Duo and a GTX 260.

And the recommended specs are a 6 year old Intel Core i5-3470 and a 5 year old GTX 660.

All of them with ease.

A side note on your CPU. Intel has changed it's specs now that CPUs throttle according to temperature.

^ Maybe you'll believe it from him, then.

True, for full multi-core performance you're limited to 3.9Ghz. Although given that CSL is mostly a single-core game, at least it benefits from a higher single core performance. It's a better option for CSL than something with 16 cores that runs at a max speed of 3.0Ghz. (would be great for most other games, but CSL is an odd beast.)

Heh, office systems. Yea, those would throttle down in minutes. Anything that's "Sleek", "thin" or "styled like a Macbook" is terrible at cooling by default.

The name 'laptop' always makes me laugh for that very reason, lol. Your lap is the last place it should be put. :p

Actually the 2000 and 3000 series CPUs use the same socket type and are interchangeable. so they'll both work just fine. Make sure your motherboard BIOS is up to date if you go 3770k route. But 2600k is more than adequate for the job and a third lower cost.
Long delay response, but when I checked my motherboard BIOS, it wasn't updated from its original 2012 version, so I'm going with the 2600k route. I've been searching for a couple of weeks now as I'm from the PH, buying on Amazon has extra delivery fees due to shipping, but I'll let you know if there's new updates. Thank you.

So at the moment i run the following specs, managed a 120K city with mods easily. no frame drops.

OS: Windows 10 Pro
CPU: Intel Core i7-8700K CPU @3.7GHZ
GPU: Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080Ti
RAM: 4x8GB DDR4-2133

I wonder how large i can go with this

Looking at a 2 gig gt 710, would that help a little or a lot?

That's about the same as the integrated graphics. So no real help.

If nvidia, then look for x50 or better yet x60 models.

I thjink 1050 are around $100 right njow. A new GTX 1060 6GB GDDR5X at aound $200 (normally $350.)

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500454

It has a single power requirement. so your PSU will need an 8-pin PCIe power connector.

Otherwise, the 1050 and 1050 Ti models have certain models with no power connectors required.

Not sure exactly what you are asking... are you planning to buy that computer... or you have already bought it?

If you already have it, you most likely don't want to plug your monitor into any of those ports since that is the motherboard... you would want to plug your monitor directly into the graphics card.

But to answer your other question, about which one of those ports are display ports... the blue one and white one next where it says foxconn are both display ports. The blue one is AVI, and the white one is DVI-D port. To the right of them, the black port is a HDMI port.

And yes that computer can definitely run Cities Skylines... though its definitely has an outdated CPU platform. If you haven't bought it yet I would recommend something newer.

\

That is outdated and not supported anymore. It does have 8-cores that supports this game though.

The GTX 1050 is a dedicated video card and has it's own DDR5 video RAM (vRAM)

In the picture, the center black single port is the HDMI port. But you want to use the one on the GTX 1050 that will be located down on the rear PCI slots on the back of the computer.

This one has only a 4-core CPU, and the graphics GPU (Radeon Vega 8) is low powered and built-in the CPU processor. It will also share system memory (RAM) so it will take away from your 8GB DDR4 RAM, so it will leave you with only 6GB RAM as it can use up to 2GB RAM to run the graphics GPU. The 2666MHz speed of the RAM is good for the CPU, but the graphics will do better with 3200MHz RAM.

I would have to recommend the newer one as it is upgradable. You will need to upgrade the video card first, since the GPU is integrated onto the CPU. i.e. if you replace the CPU, you will have no graphics. Then replace the CPU with a 6 or 8 core Ryzen CPU. You may need to upgrade the RAM first, depending how well it runs for you. I had a 2200G with 16GB DDR4 3200 MHz RAM. I made a performance worksheet if I can find it. But is was playable at stock speeds & 2,400MHz RAM. I was getting around 24fps on a 6-tile (125k population) city and just under 20fps on a 9-tile city (250k population). But even with a dedicated video card, it will struggle to get a steady 30fps on any system.

I just got my computer. and it works like a charm.. really love playing C.S. on this.. thanks again for the help! :)

Would either of these two be good to run the game with only a few mods and assets. Any recommendations must be a laptop as I travel for work

The first one has no video card. The second one is much better, The first one is 15-inch, the second one 17 inch. Bigger would be better for cooling. The first one has a business cpu it ends in U for ultrabook, which means ultra low power, which means slow. The second one has an H processor, they are much better.

If you can get other than a Dell, it would be better and likely cheaper, depending.

If you're stuck with Dell, then Alienware are much better, if you can afford the extra.

But the second Dell laptop you posted is much better. It'll likely run hot. Make sure to keep it off your lap, as it will collect dust more quickly and cause it to run hot and heat will make it run slower.

But a good gaming laptop is $1,200 and up. They are heavy, think, and low battery life. roughly 45-minutes gaming time on battery alone. A second battery is always a good option.

It's hard to say. That CPU is a 4-core, 8-thread cpu and should get you past 9-tiles.

Mut the MX130 is pretty low powered and may hold you back. It may make 9-tiles and over 100k. But not sure how much more.

If it's DDR3 memory, you will be in trouble and may not get 100k from lag. If it has GDDR5 memory, then maybe it will get you to 9-tiles full and 100k pop or more. But it's a little better than integrated graphics. Uses the same 384 shader cores that most integrated graphics use and 64-bit memory.

But the U series CPU are usually office computers and not designed for gaming, except basic games.
