Hello Everyone I'm new to the forums. I would like to get some advice on what computer specs i should go for as i'm looking to buy a new PC fairly soon. My budget for the PC will be about £800-£1500. The reason i am looking to buy a PC is because the computer i have at the moment doesn't run cities skylines that well and i would like to run the game with decent settings, a modest amount of mods and smoother gameplay. I am able to run 100k-150k population cities with around 100-150 mods and assets on low-medium settings but it is very very slow and sometimes crashes on the odd occasion.
These are the specs for the computer i have at the moment
  • Intel Core i3-4170 CPU 3.70GHz
  • Intel HD Intergrated Graphics 4400
  • 8GB RAM
Any advice on computer specs i should look out for would be very helpful to me as i don't know much about computers

you should get at least an i5 7500 or a 7600k if you can afford it; the k tells you that you can overclock it. for the graphics card an Nvidia 1070 will do, a 1060 is okay anything less will be disappointing. 16GB of RAM if you intend to use a lot of assets and mods, if you're not going to us many assets and mods then 8GB will suffice. i don't know much about AMD systems so you should wait for someone to suggest an alternative AMD system and then research yourself which one will be the best for you. AMD tend to be cheaper but slightly less powerful.

Ok I'll have a look at some of those specs and see what I can come up with and see what I can afford. In terms of AMD systems I'll try to look some up and see what I can find and thanks for the advice it will help me find a good PC build for me

Coming from Intel graphics, anything above GTX 660 won't disappoint. :p Good counterpart for the 1060 is Radeon RX580 8 GB model, but sadly they are hard to find everywhere. GTX 1070 is also really good as said.

Yes, if you are into assets, 16 GB can make a day/night difference.

Here are some rough CPU counterparts from AMD:

i5 7400 -> Ryzen 5 1400
i5 7500 -> Ryzen 5 1500X
i5 7600K -> Ryzen 5 1600 or preferrably 1600X

If I would pick one for Skylines it would be the 1600X but it really depends on the price you are going for. :) Ryzen 1600X is essentially the 1600 but clocked higher so its single core performance beats the 1600. Intel generally has better single core performance, but AMD has more of them. The 1600 for instance has 6 cores and 12 threads. Even some high end Intel i7's don't have so many. Skylines is mediocre at utilizing extra threads so pick whatever suits your needs otherwise and look at the price tags. Also: Every AMD processor is overclockable if the motherboard supports it.

Good site to plan your setup: https://pcpartpicker.com/

How many citizens do you have in your city? These specs should run the game alright at about 30 thousand population at medium or medium high settings.

Download software such as afterburner or hwmonitor to check your GPU and CPU usage while playing in different parts in the city, it could provide some clue.
Are you using mods or assets, if so, how many?

Some things you can try:
- If you have downloaded assets: Download Mesh info mod and check your highest building triangle counts and weights. It helps to remove any poorly optimized assets.
- Verify game file integrity
- Maybe lower your level of detail and shadow settings in game

Your CPU is also getting kind of old but I know it should handle about 80 000 citizens with about 15-30 fps with ease.

I didn't spot any differences. Go for the cheaper one :)

Awesome!! I can't believe that price difference. Do you think that one is better than this one?

Thanks for the response and advice. I will definitely try it :)

(using just Dynamic Res at 150% not much difference with or without it though. Also about 20 assets I think..

Intel Graphics chips aren't supported. They are way too weak and have compatibility issues with many games. Sorry.

With that said, it will run. You will be very limited on game play. Maybe 100k if you are lucky and micromanage everything perfectly. But you should be able to get a couple of tiles partial full at first. No workshop at all of course.

Update on my PC, it has 2x 8-core/16-thread xeons E5-2690-0 (sandy bridge-EB), 64GB DDR3 1333, GTX980Ti, and a RAID-0 SAS setup. Seems to only use the physical cores, not HT, however.
Are you saying that Cities: Skylines doesn't utilize hyperthreading at all? I know that SLI/Crossfire aren't supported but if that's the case with hyperthreading....
What's your framerate by the way?

Well, I have 16 physical cores plus 16 virtual cores, so probably it is just not seeing the second CPU. I have ran this game off of an i7 4-cor/8thread, and it uses them all with a large city.
