I'm also thinking about buying a new laptop, primarily to play this game-- would this one do it? Thanks for any advice! I'm currently running it on my desktop, which meets minimum specs but not recommended ones, and I would love to be able to build bigger cities, and use better graphics settings.

That's almost as high as a laptop can get. Very powerful one, but expect the battery to be sucked dry pretty quickly.

Thanks, RiORdian, yes, that's what everyone says. Also, it's heavy. But I don't carry it around much, just need it for when I'm traveling and then it tends to stay in one place and plugged in, so I'm okay with it, My biggest concern is that it's an MSI, and their customer service is apparently horrendous. Again, very grateful for the help!

A 7850K will get you to a 100k pop easy. 1 Million shouldn't be too hard on your CPU though.

You can unlock all 25 tiles with your current 7750, but filling it to max may need an upgrade.

Remember, if you get a larger gpu, you will likely need a bigger power supply. 500 watts or more. If you want higher than recommended gpu, you may need 600 watts or higher.

I'd actually go with the Athlon X4 and use your current GPU, you will certainly have more power that way. And it costs about half of 7850k.

Sorry, in your case RAM is the least problematic part, and would not help at all. Pairing APU with a discrete GPU is a bad design in itself, and that GPU even isn't that good to begin with. You are kinda lucky to be playing on that low resolution, since that helps quite a bit but not enough to make this into a usable gaming (even light) platform. Dunno about your performance in the game but I sure doubt it is playable even on low.

To illustrate, your APU has a TDP (thermal design power) of 15W, while the better CPUs have 45W+. It makes a good mobility/office PC, but not one on which you can game. Sorry for the bad news again.

Better, at least the CPU part. However the GPU is still weak and you have a higher resolution there. I would try it, but don't expect miracles. Low quality preset, and it is very possible you will probably struggle with bigger cities. The only question is at what size.

Heyo! I am going to just check up to see if I am doing anything wrong here.

It feels like I should be getting more than 25-30FPS on a semi-full 4 quadrant, 35k city, but if you could confirm that that is normal for this setup, that would be reassuring.

If this is not normal, any tips to help bring the performance up?

How high are your settings? That GPU is 3 generations old, and even when new it was part of the lower mainstream so it might struggle with high quality settings. 660 is in the recommended spec, yours is 2 cards lower, 650-650Ti-660. You should be able to have more than those 30 fps even with full 9 tiles on lowest though.

Edit:
If you game a lot, a new GPU might help your PC for quite a bit, since you have a very powerful CPU coupled with lots of RAM, allowing you to play games not even released. However that might require about 150-200€ or so at least.

I can play with high quality settings, almost all maxed out. But dropping settings down doesn't do any difference. I've forced DX9, and tried modifying the 3D settings on my NVidia Graphics panel. The only very minor difference I got was dropping resolution to the lowest, where I got a 3-5FPS increase. That's about it.

EDIT: Dropping down settings actually gives me approx. 5FPS increase. 35 when looking over the city.

The game lists 64-bit system as the minimum, so sadly - no 32-bit W7, I am sorry. Other than that, the GPU is very slightly above minimum, CPU is ok and RAM is passable. If not for the Windows, you would be able to play the game, however on what settings I dare not to guess.

Now I have to do some thinking about getting 64 bit OS and if changes to my machine are worth or the new one will be better solution. Game seems great from images, videos and people posts everywhere I looked.
