Specs are:
Intel Core i7-2640M @ 2.8GHz (in my laptops "speed mode" it apparently runs at 3.5GHz)
Intel HD Graphics 3000 and AMD Radeon HD 6630M (I guess the second gpu only runs in said speed mode, too)
4gb ram
how will the game perform? I'd guess it should perform okay -ish on lowest settings.

Your cpu is between recommended and minimum. Your gpu (radeon) is lower than minimum. It will probably run, but how well I don't know. If you buying the game, make sure it's radeon card running the game, not the intel one.

Cpu between minimum and recommended. gpu lower than minimum. People running mac says that intel hd 5500 performs ok on low settings. How well it will run on Ubuntu i don't know.

I have the exact same Mac. It works but you have to lower details level. And if you have a bootcamp, I recommend playing on it, it works better on higher settings.
Also when the screen gets fuller? Like when your city becomes very large? And what graphic settings do you mean: mid, mid-low or low (just an indication)? Thanks a lot for answering!

Your gpu is better than minimum, your cpu is probably around recommended. A six year old 3 GHz dual core can have less performance than a four year 2,2 GHz quad core. You should be able to run the game on low-medium settings.
Should I be fine? System Requirements Lab is saying my graphics card is a problem but it meets the vram requirements and shader, etc.

Cpu better than recommended, gpu(Nvidia) around minimum. So the game should run well on low-medium settings. Be sure that your using Nvidia card when running the game.

I need new hardware to be able to play this and it is time to upgrade anyway (have been putting CIV5 off for way too long). Looking at iMacs, processors should be fine all across if I'm reading it correctly but not sure about graphics. Any obvious do's or dont's here?

All three will run the game, all three gpu is better than minimum, If you can afford it I will recommended number three.
