I ordered the game to play it on my recent laptop (i7 cpu) but tried it yesterday on my desktop pc and it still worked like a charm on low gfx settings. Makes me wonder if the minimum requirements are accurate or is my gpu stronger than I think it is?

Cpu is better than minimum, your gpu is lower than minimum. It will run, but expect lag, even on low settings.

Cpu better than minimum. 9800 lower than minimum, but the game will work. Maybe some lag even on lowest settings. Geforce 750, better than minimum. You shouild be able to run it on medium-high settings without lag.

Third of all, I can say I have an Intel 4000 series graphics card as well, and while it's not technically supported, I've so far been able to run the game decently well on low settings. Framerate gets really low when you zoom in to street level but otherwise its manageable.

Yeah, it looks like people can do ok with the Intel Iris, but not so good with the 3000 series. The 4000 series is where it gets tricky. I'm hoping having 16GB of RAM helps offset things, but we'll see.
As long as the game isn't choppy on low settings, I think I'd be happy with it. I don't really need to zoom in at street level, I'm not as interested in detailed views.

Your cpu is better than recommended, gpu better than minimum.
Is it a laptop with two gpu? If so, are you sure it's running with the nvidia card?

If that's not the problem, open a new thread in the support forum.

I have a HP laptop with about the same stats. differences are I've got 8GB ram and my cpu is i5-4300.
So far it runs OK (all set to low) in windowed mode while having 2 monitors active. Some lag but manageable.
In fullscreen with no external monitors it is smooth so far. 10k pop is the larges I've had so far.
It will lag a little with our hardware but if you don't mind it it's still enjoyable. No crashes or odd behavior so far.

Problem solved, I noticed in the nvidia taskmanager the game was not in the list so I added it manually and assigned the nvidia processor and now it runs a thousand times better.

I have the following spec and i am able to run till 15k population at ~20FPS (of course all setting low)

CPU i3-2120
8gb ram
GT610

my graphic card is far below the minimum and i could still run the game
i guess the game demand more on ram and cpu maybe?
