The pope mocks you by keeping Rome. Use a de jure claim on him.

Right, after months of playing low-speed, here's at last my empire as of January 1st 1453:
italy1453.jpg

Started as Duchess mathilda of Tuscany. My third character became king of Italy (and had the longest reign as well). I managed to matrilinearly marry the heir of the French crown, and a couple of generation later I killed the french king and took his place as king of France; who owned parts of nothern Africa. I then successfuly grabed my independence from the HRE, and started a series of Holy Wars against muslims in Spain, my strategy being waiting for "dukes" to rebel against the Sultan of Mauretania and start a Holy War against the rebelious duke, and another one against the Sultan.
A Crusade against mauretania finished the conquest of the peninsula, as well as West Africa. I also topped Crusade for Egypt (thanks to the knife in the back of the King of Ireland), and I finished with stealing Rome, Orvieto and Spoleto from the Pope (who had usurped Spoleto from me at the beginning of the game).
My only regret is that I wasn't able to take Burgundy, which leaves a horrible grey blob on the middle, or destroy the HRE. Ihad the power to do so, as I could raise 400k+ levies (Crusade for Egypt took me 3 years only).
in 1453, the ERE still exists, however the young Emperor died at battle against one of his numerous rebelious vassals, leaving a 0-year old daughter as Emperess. So it's not disappeared, but it's very close to...

Also, you can see I finished with the 1.05g version. Was a fun game.

Nothing satisfies me more in this game than crushing and usurping the Fatimids... I love to see the sultanate splinter into countless weak counties ready to be devoured by Christian Egypt.

I give you Jean I Capet, Most Christian Monarch, Emperor of the Franks and the Romans ; King of France, of Germany, of Italy, of Aquitaine, of Burgundy, of Hungary, of Lotharingia, of Lithuania, of Poland, of Croatia, of Denmark, of Sweden and of Ruthenia ; Protector of Jerusalem, Bohemia and Norway ; Shield of the West, Defender of the Faith ; Duke of Karelia and of Lesser Poland ; Lord of Melun, Count of Paris, Orleans, Amiens, Troyes, Provence, Krakow, Sandiormez and Sacz ; Baron of Senlis ; King consort of Ireland

The Kingdom of Leon and Ireland are held by Capets (I married a cousin)
I will soon proclaim my Emperor high marshal of the Spanish marches when I start the Reconquista

To summarize, I hold 2 Empires, 13 Kingdoms, 2 Duchies, 9 Counties and 1 Barony and am the direct liege of 31 holdings, 9 countries, 61 duchies and 3 kingdoms.

By the way, am I the only one who thinks the number of duchies should increase with the number of kingdoms held? And that the number of ceremonial titles also grow? And that he Pope could reward you with ceremonial titles as well?

I messed with the color for e_spain in landed_titles.txt not a huge fan of green.... ohh and Anatolia is mostly owned by a kinsman, i won a jihad when i was still just a sultan, so giving away a sultanate created a separate kingdom.... and Leon has one little piece of land over in Anatolia....

Just made Scandinavia.

Would have made it a generation earlier, but after putting his mother on the throne of Poland, his wife on the throne of Sweden (she was already queen of Denmark), the King of Norway died in battle trying to take the county of Leinster. He was young with only a single daughter, two imbecile brothers (one of whom was pagan, the other of whom had 2 stats above 0) and one very young brother of normal intelligence. Due to elective succession he left his daughter Zofia with just the duchy of Ostlandet and the county of Dublin. His wife followed him to the grave not long after and Sweden and Denmark were split, with Denmark stealing much of Sweden's colonial possessions in Finland (just like in real life then, except not with Iceland and Greenland).

Zofia had a strong claim on the Duchy of Meath (the count of Kildare had usurped it off her dad because apparently you can do that when your duke is also a King and you have a claim), a weak claim on Leinster county (a fabricated one inherited from her dad's fatal attempt to conquor the province) and weak but inheritable claims on Norway and later Sweden and Denmark once her mother died. She spent the the regency fabricating a claim on a adjacent county in Conought and easily conquered it using her troops from Ostlandet. Then she assassinated the count of Leinster and pressed her weak claim against his under-aged heir. Then she declared a war for Meath against her father's former vassal just a month or so before crown authority got increased to medium. After usurping the duchies of Conought and Leinster and pressing the de jure claims she had half of Ireland conquered already and she was under 30. Next she sent presents to every duke in Norway and declared war against the current Queen, duchess of Orkney, who was so unpopular the entirety of peninsula Norway joined Zofia's side, leaving her with just Orkney, Moray (conquered off Scotland by Zofia's dad and grandad) and her husband, duke of the Isles on her side. Needless to say Zofia took back her crown, despite a almost ruinous intervention by England at 98% warscore (yeah, I reloaded a few times, but I thought I deserved it after not reloading earlier when Zofia's dad died).

Next Zofia pressed one of her vassal's claims on the last province she needed to form the Kingdom of Ireland and then invited a claimant to the duchy of Ulster to put on the throne there since nobody Irish would pledge themselves to a Norwegian. Ignoring the rest of Ireland under the control of the Republic of Munster, she had every adult male in line to the throne of Denmark murdered and declared war. After a long 8 year campaign consisting entirely of sieges outside of a short intervention by Denmark's Hungarian allies, she re-took the first of her mother's kingdoms. A few years later she died peacefully in bed at the age of 72, leaving three kingdoms and a claim to Sweden to her Grandson.

So I was quite pleased with myself for going from duchess to quadrupple-duchess to triple-queen to pentuple king to Emperor in two generations (well, three but I don't count the middle one since he died before his mother).

Now I just need to secure the Baltic coast, get the rest of Scotland and assimilate Ireland into de jure Scandinavia and that should be my goals for this play through more or less complete.

I did have all of Finland except for one county in karelia, but then the Duchess of Finland inherited the throne of Hungary. By firstborn was betrothed to her though so I'll get it back.
