Do I detect a drop shadow as well as a gradient? I love what you did with it.
A quick explanation please, I am a large fan of Photoshop and use it a lot in leisure time.
Also: what mod is that? I think I know what it is but I'm not very familiar with them [the mods].

I cut the oceans out and then pasted them back in exactly where they were but added an inner shadow effect.

People have been requesting I do a tutorial and show them how to make a nice AAR quality map. I have included a file below which contains instructions, a template you can use and a nice map font called Romeodn. Please note you will need some sort of image editing program like photoshop. I use Photoshop Elements 2.0 which was released in 2002 so you don't need super expensive programs like CS6.

Just finished this game... and lacked a few years for the last goal.

It's the religions view. There are no Catholic heresies left, no Orthodox counties, just those three Nestorians and some varieties of Shia. It started when I tried to find out if there was some way to end the Schism from the Catholic side, for instance ending every single Orthodox province and ruler.

Seems there isn't :).

... and the cultural view, some years earlier...

As usual, the places where I could get Swedish rulers assimilated, the places were the throne was usurped (i.e. no second-tier ruler change) stay mostly as they were.

Annd, how'd that happen?

I created a custom Saxon/Ibadi count under the Rustamid Emirate, and invaded Cornwall in 869, after creating a foothold, it was mostly Holy Wars and Invasions to form England, and then population Saxon/Ibadi courtiers and vassals :)

thinking i was going to make it extra challengeing i started as an unlanded Patrician under Amalfi, in 867 i was Greek Orthodox.

now on my 3rd character i am invading East Francia for upper Burgundy, my sister-in-law`s claim. luckily i took the time to buy my kid the election before i declared war, as my previous character died sudenly of natural causes.
when my first character was elected Doge i promptly swore fealthy to the Basileus in Constantinople. obviously my plan is to become Basileus and make something of a Roman (merchant)republic.
my previous(2nd) character was kicking it about and took Tunis, Algerie, Tripolitana and Alexandria. he also took Rome and a few cities and counties in Italy, suddenly found himself Serene Doge of Pisa.

my previous character was the Serene Doge of king-sized republic of Pisa, married to a Byzantine princess born in the purple. he was vassal of the Byzantine empire and father of the emperor himself.
the 1st son became emperor way too soon, i am not exactly sure how it came about. possibly he simply inherited in place of his mother, being the closest male decandant of former emperor.

the old Doge died suddenly due to being maimed and otherwise badly injured. leaving the 2nd son as patrician at age 8, bethroated to a Byzantine princess born in the purple - his aunt. there were also a younger 3rd brother, the attractive one, bethroated to a Byzantine aunt in the purple.

i focused on finding a good mentor for my new character and just let the years pass.
there had been a reasonably strong faction to install some other claimant in Constantinople. it seems that without the great Doge`s protection the faction gained momentum and soon civil war erupted.
in the midst of it the Doge died and a new was elected, me still underaged and not candidate. when the dust settled i had come of age, the youngest brother died in suspicious circumstances and the eldest brother lost his crown to the would-been wife of the dead one.

and as an added "bonus" the Serene republic of Pisa was left independent.
my powerbase is Latium, Tunis, Seville and Granada. my capital is Rome.

the new "crap for brains" Doge could not keep the extended realm together, without an emperor to supress dissent, so an independence faction built with lickety speed. boom, civil war.
then i get a message that a bunch of people over at the Empire has decided to press my claim for the throne. so said an done, the other ursurper abdicateds under preassure.

i am still patrician while emperor with two fresh civil wars to fight.
one is against my eldest brother, claiming the throne back.
the other is a faction pressing my wifes claim on the throne. this is insane and properly Roman...
meanwhile Pisa breaks upa and withers away out of my controll.
territory lost to/by Pisa black out-line, rebelious territory red out-line.

The end of my papal playthrough, and the first time I've stuck around until the end date (although I started in 1266).

E65A2CE305910CD26E1A2441455AF4CC38B943D1

Overview 1 - overview 2 - de jure vassals - republic trade zones - religion

The Papal State encompasses the majority of the Kingdom of Italy, including Sardinia and Sicily, and additionally Venice, Upper Burgundy, Cephalonia, Crete, Alexandria and Jerusalem. In Italy, the Pope mainly achieved this expansion through fabricated claims, which many a titleholder found difficult to comprehend. After reinstating a vassalized merchant republic of Ancona, the Pope took great care to exterminate all other republics in the Mediterranean until all trade was controlled and taxed for the good of the holy work. Only the republic of Cyberrhaeot remained, having mysteriously sprung up after the timurid invasion fractured Greece.

In the late 13th century, the Aztecs swept across western europe, conquering all land from France to Mauretania. Their onslaught ended abruptly when the heutlataoni converted to catholicism and successfully passed the true faith on to the realm; formerly thought to have been sent from hell, the aztec empire became a powerful ally of catholicism. Within a century, all of mauretania was christianized and no infidel would ever set foot on Iberia again. Future conclaves would enjoy the patronage of mesoamerican cardinals who have not yet managed to gain the trust of the indigenous clergy. The aztecs created two additional empires, which changed hands constantly due to ill-considered gavelkind and subsequent infighting.

A chronicle of crusades:

First Crusade: Anatolia - Intended to "show them who's Rome". Anatolia remained in the hands of the Franks until their vassalation under the Aztecs, at which point Anatolia broke free and remained independent until being claimed once more by the French tlataoni. Frequently embroiled in civil wars, Anatolia was subject to land grabs from byzantium and persia until being wiped off the map by the Timurids.

Second Crusade: Hungary - Intended to stop the encroaching Golden Horde. It didn't take long for this hungary-shaped blob of scotland to be reconquered; after being reduced to three counties, the hungarian crown was claimed by a pretender of house Dunkeld, who was promptly subjugated and converted to the heathen ways.

Third Crusade: Jerusalem - A bold push for the Holy Land, which came under the direct control of the Papacy, where it was held for decades, despite a Jihad (which was weathered thanks to a Holy Roman intervention). Eventually lost to Hashimid invaders. The Pope later took it back through a holy war, only to have it catch the fancy of the Timurids. A century later, another pope conquered Jerusalem during a bloody Timurid civil war.

Fourth Crusade: Poland - The Golden Horde was advancing too far once more, and needed to be stopped. Norway could not manage to hold on to the liberated kingdom for even half as long as Scotland held theirs.

Fifth Crusade: Ruthenia - Intended to cripple the Golden Horde by annexing a large area of land. The Pontiff soon discovered that the Christian world had not been the Horde's primary concern, when Ruthenia pitifully collapsed before the Timurids mere months after its liberation.

Sixth Crusade: Greece - In response to the complete control of Greece and Anatolia by the Timurids. The crusade ended inconclusively in the wake of a decadence revolt which not only drove the Timurid dynasty to obscurity, but left the former East Roman Empire a mess of independent fiefdoms, some shiite, some orthodox and others catholic, a mixture of timurid, byzantine and french legacies.

How'd you play the Pope? Mods?

Calling it a "mod" is a bit on the generous side, but it is self-made. I put it up for download here.

Amazing! How did you manage to play as the Pope?! I am sure many peopel would appreciate this save in order to convert it!

Alright, get it here. I have no idea to what extend save games depend on mods in this game, so I don't know if you'll get it loaded by the game on your setup.
