It isn't hard, no. It does take a little time - usually a lazy sunday afternoon unless I get distracted halfway through by jelly beans or a squirrel. But the thing is I'm not using Photoshop, but rather a very old, very outdated copy of Corel Photopaint because I don't actually know how to replicate the effect in Photoshop itself.
Yes, but as I don't use a program anyone sane has used in years it will only be of limited use. Hopefully someone with actual Photoshop skills will be able to work out how to do it all faster and better.

My current game as the custom de Jérusalem dynasty. Charles I hails from Toulouse which he eventually inherited again down the line. The second crusade for Egypt was won by his grand-daughter Judith I, Holy Outremer Empress, Queen of Jérusalem, Égypte and Toulouse.
Oh trust me, i've made that mistake before. My intention is to take Sardinia as the 'stepping stone' between the two bastions of the empire and then finish up with taking the rest of Jordan. Should make for pretty borders!
Can you give a quick tutorial on how to do that?

I made this today from my current play through starting in 867. As usual the world is sort of messed up but this is crusader kings 2 so we should expect no less.
Brief History:
Carolingians lost France to a German dynasty but retained the Kingdom of Lombardia. Under the Carolingians, Lombardia has expanded north accepting the german principalities as their vassals and are one step closer toward forming the holy roman empire. Norse tribes have invaded lower saxony although upper saxony is still christian and german. Norse settlers have also established themselves in Frisia, East Anglia and Mercia (under Norwegian hegemony). England is struggling after being pushed back into the south west corner. The Welsh and Irish Kingdoms are unified and strong. Alba has weathered the worst of the viking invasions but their Cumbric King has been captured by the Norse rulers of Mon. Aquitaine now finds itself on the frontier with the Umayyad Caliphate and poor Leon is fighting for her survival. Slavic and Wendish pagan tribes dominate the east, orthodox and catholic missionaries are not having much luck converting the heathens. Scandinavia has had a one or two kings convert to Christianity but they were quickly assassinated by angry subjects and so the vikings are firmly Norse. Raids are a frequent occurrence in England but due to the Norwegian success expanding the Danelaw into Mercia as far as Wales the coastal norse have to sail further to raid each summer. Byzantines hold onto power but there are civil wars. To the north exists the kingdoms of Moldavia and Bulgaria united under the Belgarsko dynasty. In the orient, the Al-Abbas and Saffarid empires dominate.
Hey thanks, glad you like it. I'm trying to make my own using a CK2 campaign and then we can see how real history compares with CK2 alternative history.

Do I detect a drop shadow as well as a gradient? I love what you did with it.
A quick explanation please, I am a large fan of Photoshop and use it a lot in leisure time.
Also: what mod is that? I think I know what it is but I'm not very familiar with them [the mods].
Update on my Jérusalem game! Judith I, Holy Outremer Empress 'the Lionheart' died at 72 after winning a crusade for Égypte and Afrique and forming Syria. She also became Grand Mistress of the Knights Hospitaller and the Knights Templar leaving her son Charles III on the throne, he killed himself about a month later which kinda bummed me out. His son, Charles IV however has had an odd reign so far. The Ilkhanate stormed in and obliterated the Seljuks who up until now bordered the steppes, the Byzantines and then encompassed all of Arabia. I sent a missionary in the hopes of converting the horde before they reached me. It worked! Immediately the Khagun's vassals revolted for independence and well, you can see the mess! Other major developments are my vassal the duke of Toulouse claiming France and the de Jérusalem dynasty sitting on the Byzantine Throne.
I use the SWMH map and decided to not include the african kingdoms because it looks messy. In my game the kingdom of Moldavia was ruled by the Belgarsko dynasty. When they inherited Bulgaria I decided it should be called the Belgarsko Kingdom similar to the way historians called England the Angevin Empire under Richard the Lionheart.
Fairly common, at bad times there are four or five liberations of whatever and peasant revolts, but at good times there is only one every couple of years. It helps that I get several free relations bonuses, born in purple + augustus + saoshyant descendant + divine marriage + elective monarchy (total of +65).
Virtually everything is zoroastrian.
Wait, Augustus? I thought only Christians and Hellenistic Pagans could make the Roman Empire decision.
