So, I was thinking, what could be a good mod for CK2? What would be really original? A post-apocalyptic mod, of course!

And where should this mod be set? Not boring old Europe, surely, after all it would be too much like vanilla CK2. I know...(dun dun dun)...AMERICA! The originator of post-apocalyptic fiction, even!

Other ideas/selling points:

  • Old technology from before the Apocalypse that your character can wield, giving him special traits. Who doesn't want an assault rifle or ray gun for their CK2 character?
  • A totally altered map, play from Chicago to Washington D.C, from Ottawa to Havana.
  • Total insanity! The Holy American Empire fights the Kingdom of New York (which is under the House of Germanotta)!
  • New religions! Protestantism and so forth!
  • And lots more!

Anybody interested?

I was actually pondering a "Let's rebuild the US with my 'tribe'. The government would evolve as you advance.

One problem, how do 'colonize' the land around you? I doubt the engine has a mechanic for it, Unless you rework Pagans to be 'uncivilized tribes' and conquer them.

Also: the Duchy of California ruled by the De Schwarzenegger dynasty, Florida under the house of Ciccone and Oprah Winfrey as the Pope? LoL!
I don't know how likely it is that this mod will ever be made, but it sure tickles my imagination! :D

Why does it have to be the USA? I would think it would be a lot more entertaining if it was still the same map, just with a lot more "Barbaric" tribes.

Sorry, but the US did not have a "medieval" age, so whatever you do and however the map looks like, it wouldn't feel a bit like the United States. I do not know why you Yanks are so obsessed about not having a "post-European" history older than 400 years. Those who are not "Native American" descendent share the European, African or Asian history of their ancestors. What's so bad about it, except the way the native americans and slaves were treated? Right, nothing.
I understand that you dream of mods with different maps, I understand why an post-appocalyptic pan-medieval scenario might be interesting, but on a map of the United States? That's like playing basketball on a cricket field with a boomerang. It doesn't make sense, even if you find someone willing to play with you.

Imaging what such a world would look like will be the most important first stem of creating such a mod. The way I see it, these are the things that will have to be worked out in such a mod:

1. Religions ( i.e. clergy, religious orders, pope(s)...)

2. Technology ( modern technologies or not )

3. History ( i.e. kingdoms, titles, cultures)

4. Non-playable Characters (the equivalent of pagans, muslims, and merchant republics in CKII)

5. Map

My vision would be a world several hundred years after the apocalypse: a new high-middle ages but in North America.

for a middleagesesche USA, canticle for st-lebiowitz [i spelt that wrong] would be a good starting point. one of the great science fiction novels and entirely about a history repeating post-apocolyptic america
probably set it the couple centuries either side of fiat lux

1. it has a new rome and pope in america
2. technology is recovering slowly so its mostly middleagey
3. its got kings and what have you
4. mutants, nomads
5. well thatll be hard work for any other setting

Fallout is a good example if you're looking for inspiration. Many videogames exist for it. Brotherhood of Steel = Technofanatic Military Order. New Vegas is a recent entry that explores the political conflict between a california/southwest democratic state against a slave-based plains "horde" that is encroaching on their territory. The apocalypse was related to a modern war with China, leaving many descendants of chinese invaders on american soil.

I could see family and religion becoming important again in a survivalist post-apoc future, but dynastic succession seems far less likely unless the disarray lasts for a very long time. There's just so much easily retrievable metals around, and concrete is everywhere. It's hard to conceive us falling too far back when we can pillage the products of the industrial revolution to build very strong weapons and structures.

And what of electricity? Someone will keep the fire burning. It's too effective a piece of knowledge for it to be forsaken. Watermills/Windmills to power things like flood lights and radios at the least could be common. The subways could fill with water in some places, but there is a lot of track across the developed world. People would probably use these to move people and products from A to B even if they have to use handcars for mobility. Depending on the health and availability of pack animals, civilization could well develop around the axis of river and track like Chicago.

I think political entities would still try to emulate those that were prominent directly before the apocalypse. Even many monarchies/theocracies of europe had significant elective systems.

In my opinion, the point of a post apocalyptic CKII mod set in North America is to explore what that world might look like.

Without getting into too much of the history, I'm going to give you my take on this mod idea. The middle ages is often seen as the period of time that separates the modern world from antiquity. After a long decline of Rome, the final great power in the ancient western world; the western world entered the 'dark ages' that lasted for several hundred years. The time period that will be covered in the vanilla version of CKII is arguably the beginning of a western resurgence of learning, technology, and power; albeit a slow resurgence. In the mod I envision, a slow and gradual decline of the modern world will not suffice. The destruction of our modern world would have to be sudden, devastating, and nearly absolute. For instance, a drug-resistant pandemic infectious disease of some kind could leave the world heavily depopulated; so much so that the modern world would cease to function. Our modern world collapses if you don't have enough trained people to operate facilities such as a power plant, a water treatment facility, or an oil refinery. People will abandon the suburbs and cities if they cannot feed themselves and their families because the trucks, trains, and cargo vessels cannot transport food to their local store shelves. The key to setting up a new medieval world is depopulating the cities; people must return to the land to meet their vital needs. They band together to protect themselves into small settlements. It takes quite an imagination to see what a Medieval North America would look like, but there are those who have already looked at this in some detail. Trying to a search for the term "Medieval America;" you'll find the work of someone who has done just that.

Still, this mod would have to address what a Medieval America would look like and feel like in a period of modest resurgence. I'd love to hear some more from the CKII community about this idea.
