That's insane. Thanks for the reference - I have to review my understanding of nuclear fission - and implosion detonation in particular.
I say insane because it must have been extremely hazardous for the poor guy deploying it - but that's tactical nukes for you.

Not really. Going off the wiki, it launches 1.25 or 2.5 miles out, and the detonation itself is only fatal within 1/4 of a mile. Well outside the launch range. Nuclear radiation falls off quick, and the blast is too small to get a proper explosion like most good nuclear weapons.

Honestly that sub would be less useful in combat or ground attack than it would be as long range recon. Covert recon using scout aircraft from a submersible carrier could have given a lot of information very quickly with a reasonable chance to avoid detection of the sub itself.
The Japanese built quite a lot of submarines that would carry one or two scout planes, the Type A's, B's. That actually saw combat too.

The Soviets had some post war transport/ assault sub projects. Some would have launched planes AND tanks.

Ever see a WWII vintage American "pineapple" grenade? The killing range of the major fragments was beyond the maximum throwing range of the grenade. Granted, the odds of being hit by the big pieces of shrapnel at that distance were minimal, but you were still at significant risk from the smaller fragments just by throwing it. THAT is insane, and it was standard issue.

The article never explained how a steam-gas turbine on that sub would lead to more underwater endurance, you still need oxygen for the fuel and have the major disadvantages of not being able to instantly start or stop the engine, and steam turbines are quite loud.

Being a 1948 design means it wasn't a nuclear reactor.

The only thing I can think of was for a few years after WW2 the Soviets tried experimenting with the German idea of keeping around tanks of pure oxygen for long submerged runs, it usually ended in a catastrophic was for the poor crews and was abandoned, especially with nuclear power on the horizon.

didnt they get around it by getting needed oxigen from sea water somehow?

i found very interesting thing. in 1890 Richard Gatling patented electrical minigun able to reach 3000 rpm, but due to introduction of gas operated machineguns, bankrupted. so we could have had miniguns in ww1 and 2... and germans in ww1 actually too tried to use their own minigun. said to reach 7000 rpm, but never went for mass production due to technical issues. thats a pretty interesting thing.

When nuclear reactors are on a ship they have enough power to do that, but if you have a nuclear reactor you lose the whole point about needed enough oxygen to run a generator. All nuclear submarines do use electricity to separate the oxygen from water so they can stay underwater until they run out of food.

Russians worked on it too.

Well, revolving barrels did fall out of favor, but revolver actions were used for aircraft cannon mostly and some MGs as well.

When throwing grenades, it's expected that the soldier would have a rifle-proof cover nearby (else they would have been gunned down already), and shrapnels have far worse penetration than rifle rounds so they're not put in more danger. Meanwhile there's a pretty slim chance that a portable nuke would be fired out of a fallout shelter, though its blast radius appears to be much shorter than its range as noted above.

An idea: what about torpedoes with delayed contact fuse? When triggered, the torpedo's propeller will slow down and the torpedo will sink under the ship, and several seconds later it would explode when it's under the ship.

That is easier to achieve with torpedoes that run a at pre-set depth and have a magnetic/noise fuse...

They were both rather unreliable for most of WWII though, this is meant to be an intermediate before they were fixed.

Well I mean that is what modern Gatling guns do, so it did work in the end, quite effectively I might add, just took about 60-70 years before put in large production. From the 7.62mm "minigun" to the 30mm cannon of death from the A-10 Warthog they are electrically operated Gatling guns. The most common are the 7.62mm on helicopters door guns, and the 20mm Vulcan Cannon for aircraft. Also as far as I know the US is by far the biggest user of electrically operated, multi barreled guns, because well it's the USA ;).

Well cant really doubt the effectiveness. The Sheer Rate of Fire possible with Modern Miniguns would warp conventional barrels and we already learned the hard way what happens when you take the Machine Gun defensive armament off out fight craft. So if were gonna have it might as well shove the best damn gun we can cram into it.
