I saw a patch mentioned somewhere that fixed a "chat", but I believe I've tried almost every key and combination of keyboard keys I know (and Xfire also does not support the game). Could anyone enlighten me?

If you meant text chatting, it's the tab key. If you mean voice chatting, there's none unless you use an external program such as Teamspeak or Mumble.
