Maybe I should give HoI one more chance. I am not really a part of this whole WW2 crowd, I like ancient and medieval times much more, so the closer to present times, the worse for me. I never really gave HoI a chance. You guys convinced me try it out once more. Just after I find my CD with it, no idea where I might have put it...

By the way, I wonder if Paradox was ever considering a modern times game or a futuristic one. I mean, they already took as everywhere, from ancient times (I assume they will extend Rome from Diadochi wars till the beginning of dark ages with expansions) through medieval and renaissance all the way up to WW2.

Maybe it's time to create a 2010 AD game, or a 2100 one?

I think Diplomacy took that honor, alone with the buggiest and most poorly developed game awards.

Vicky is my second favorite game (EUII being the 1st) and the best economical/political simulator there is. The first time I played it I was like WTF?o_O. Then after some trail and error and the patch, it became a great game. Ricky made it even better with more realistic economy(though some things still bother me). I hope paradox does not do to Vicky 2 what they did to EUIII. Then, that would truly be an abomination.

I had slighted Vicky recently in another thread; but shortly after that I got curious about Revolutions and started playing again. I still don't feel I understand the vast web of causes and effects -- but the mere fact of that web makes Vicky the most realistic and lifelike of all Pdox titles. The changes that Revolutions makes are great -- I'm actually having a great time just keeping my country's head above water. The way the game models population behavior and political consciousness is just unrivaled in any game anywhere. CK and EU are just as fun, obviously, maybe more so; but I think Vicky best represents what is really unique about Paradox.

I don't get it actually. I hated HoI2, I loved Vicky...

What's so good in HoI2 so many people love it?

Everything that's been said by others in this thread.

At first I couldn't get to grips with it, I dunno. But then, after buying CK and DV and playing nothing else for a long time, I went back to it. I started out with one of the scenarios, the Spanish Civil War one. I was blown away. There was so much more strategy involved than EUIII, it just felt right.

I don't know what it was, but I've been in love with it ever since I conquered Spain and got Franco into power.

I prefer HoI series myself. Here are some of HoI's advantages over Vicky:
1. Better theme: WW2 appeals to more crowd
2. No non-sense peace term: get all of the strategic points then boom - everything is annexed.
3. Simple: compared to Victoria it is much simpler.
4. Cleaner interface: just to split a pop in Victoria requires so many clicks, it's unbelievable.

The good news is that Rome has 1 and 3, and to some extent 4. So I am predicting good sales for Rome.

Rome is going to have a WW2 scenario? Sweet.

But I agree, HoI got me into Paradox games, and it's still their best series. Not perfect, though.

The only problems I've ever had with HOI are problems that are really unavoidable in a WW2 game. Ala, lack of diplomacy, and a short time frame (though with the expansions it is getting quite long). But you can't have a WW2 game that spans the centuries, and the lack of complicated diplomacy, the lack of that whole portions of the game that is so central to most of paradox's games is rather unavoidable. It wouldn't make much sense if halfway through WW2 everyone just went... eh, lets call this off. And it wouldn't make for a very interesting game either.

I've never played Vicky. I love the EU series. My favorites from Paradox. I adore CK for what it could be, every patch, DV, and again every patch, make it better. A little closer. Obviously I enjoyed HOI2, seeing as I just told you I only had two minor problems with game design that couldn't possibly be fixed. I would play Vicky, I just haven't been able to get my hands on a copy, and part of me isn't sure about the game overall. When I play CK I say, this would be a good game if they started over with the same intentions (build a dynasty) and many of the same features. A CK2, in other words. I'm afraid if I play Vicky I'd have gone through all that effort just to start hoping for Vicky 2.

Is everybody getting sentimental?

HOI? Best overall strategic WWII game ever made.

EU2? Completely daft introduction to Paradox had no idea what was going on, why anything was happening but since I loved history it all made sense. ( should be at the start of the list but its not)

Victoria? Thought the game was the brother of EU2 never realised it was a sister of HOI and played Sweden (unfortunately) , never looked back again.

EU3? On going love and hate relationship look forward to the next child.

Rome? The demo was interesting enough for me to buy it.

Looking forward? To Paradox doing a version of the The First World War perhaps a few decades before but somehow similar to HOI......

........ and a commitment from Paradox to make games that make me feel that the people who are making the game want the game to win

Well, I think that the core of Paradox players are to some extent real grognards, whose dream is a WWII at Squad Leader but with a grand strategic scope. (yeah the old dream of a "wargame to end wargames")

From this point of view, VIC/RIC is the deepest (and most complicated) simulation.

Unfortunately, the grognard market is too narrow and if you want to make a living out of game design, some kind of compromize has to be found. And the HOI family did a great job.

EUIII was a kind of disappointing at the beginning, since the balance looked a bit to much towards "semi-mass market", but the great engine and the add-ons allowed for a family of mods able to satisfy the grognards.

I am confident Rome will be on the same path, and I will give my humble contribution to Paradox sales.

Yes we are :) The proof being that several admins have posted here without moving the thread were it belongs, OT.
Everyone is so sentimental that theyre not paying any attention, just busy wiping their tears with their PI signed tissues.

*Lets a tear out*
I simply like all PI games, except diplomacy. Never really caught my interest. I guess of the ones I like, CK would be at the bottom.

IRC EUIII was 300K-ish. my source is some forgotten thread. I could even be making it up. still though, the Halo2 sold over 8 million, just to give you some perspective.

Pdox revenues are over $10 million and under $20 million. that's all I can guess.

one reason that I am interested in Pdox business is that the video game sector as a whole is undervalued and underreported. its somewhat disreputable, like the global porn, online poker and marijuana industries. games themselves may not be illegal vices, a suprising amount get banned because of subject matter and treatment.

Well if Para ever gets in a dire financial situation I hope they will contact StarDock and talk about a merger. I think Rome will be a major hit for them however.

Additionally I see the Para logo on the Age of Conan media and that title is going to be a major hit so I have no worries. :D
